  • A 6-year-old castrated male domestic short hair cat with the clinical signs of anorexia and vomiting was admitted to the local animal hospital. Abdominal radiography and ultrasonography revealed renomegaly and severe hydronephrosis in the right kidney. Surgically excised right kidney was submitted for diagnosis. On the cut surface, two milky white masses and severe dilation of renal pelvis were observed. Most of the neoplastic masses were composed of uniform well differentiated tubules lined by a single layer of cuboidal to columnar cells and projected papillae into the lumen. The neoplastic cells were strong positive for cytokeratin (CK) MNF116, but negative for CK 7. Based on the clinical and gross findings, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, this case was diagnosed as papillary renal adenoma with hydronephrosis.

  • The promoters of alkali-tolerant Bacillus sp. had been cloned in the promoter probe vector pPL703 and recombinant plasmid p-12 had been constructed. As a result of subcloning, two different promoters were found to exist in the cloned 2.9 kb promoter fragment and two recombinant plasmids p-l2B1 and p-l2B2, each harboring different promoter, were constructed. The promoter activity, which was expressed in the CAT specific activity, of p-l2B1 was 7 times higher than that of p-l2B2. The promoter activity as a function of growth revealed that both promoters of p-l2B1 and p-l2B2 were expressed after the late logarithmic growth phase and repressed in the presence of 1.0% (w/v) glucose.

  • A one-year-old spayed female Korean Shorthair cat presented to Kangwon National University Veterinary Hospital with vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, loss of appetite, and polyuria that lasted for more than two weeks. The body condition score, blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature were abnormally low, and the physical examination findings were consistent with moderate dehydration. Hematological and biochemical tests demonstrated mild azotemia and a low Na:K ratio. Additional abdominal ultrasound imaging revealed reduced size of both adrenal glands. The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test showed decreased post-ACTH cortisol and aldosterone levels and increased endogenous ACTH levels, confirming a diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism. The cat was treated with subcutaneous injections of desoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP) and oral prednisolone supplementation, and subsequent electrolyte analysis showed a normal Na:K ratio. Clinical symptoms were also improved in response to treatment. Hypoadrenocorticism in cats is a very rare disease, but it should not be excluded as a potential diagnosis in favor of kidney diseases or other conditions, especially when the Na:K ratio is low. In addition, the prognosis for the disease and the response to DOCP treatment should be further evaluated in cats.

  • A 3-year-old spayed female Russian blue cat was presented for dyspnea, nasal discharge, and stertorous breathing. Plain thoracic radiography revealed no specific findings. Computed tomography (CT) was performed to differentiate upper airway tract disorders. It revealed the presence of an iso-attenuating mass measuring 10.0 × 7.9 × 15.6 mm, with mild homogeneous contrast enhancement occupying the rostral nasopharynx. The mass was surgically debulked via a longitudinal incision in the soft palate. Histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis of the surgically excised mass revealed CD3-/CD79a+ B cell lymphoma with an incomplete margin. The patient underwent hypofractionated radiation therapy, receiving a total of 36 Gray (Gy) in 6 Gy fractions over a six-week period. A follow-up CT examination was performed after 27 months of irradiation and the patient was confirmed to have achieved a complete response. There were no complications related to irradiation. The patient was alive for 40 months without recurrence. This study suggests that hypofractionated radiation therapy combined with surgical debulking could be considered as a treatment option for feline nasopharyngeal lymphoma.

  • Through the rapid developments in machine learning, there have been diverse utilization approaches not only in industrial fields but also in daily life. Implementations of machine learning on financial data, also have been of interest. Herein, we employ machine learning algorithms to store sales data and present future applications for fintech enterprises. We utilize diverse missing data processing methods to handle missing data and apply gradient boosting machine learning algorithms; XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost to predict the future revenue of individual stores. As a result, we found that using median imputation onto missing data with the appliance of the xgboost algorithm has the best accuracy. By employing the proposed method, fintech enterprises and customers can attain benefits. Stores can benefit by receiving financial assistance beforehand from fintech companies, while these corporations can benefit by offering financial support to these stores with low risk.

  • This study proposed an analysis framework for real-time prediction of CNC processing defects using machine learning-based models that are recently attracting attention as processing defect prediction methods, and applied it to CNC machines. Analysis shows that the XGBoost, CatBoost, and LightGBM models have the same best accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and AUC, of which the LightGBM model took the shortest execution time. This short run time has practical advantages such as reducing actual system deployment costs, reducing the probability of CNC machine damage due to rapid prediction of defects, and increasing overall CNC machine utilization, confirming that the LightGBM model is the most effective machine learning model for CNC machines with only basic sensors installed. In addition, it was confirmed that classification performance was maximized when an ensemble model consisting of LightGBM, ExtraTrees, k-Nearest Neighbors, and logistic regression models was applied in situations where there are no restrictions on execution time and computing power.

  • This study was carried to investigate the antioxidative effect of ethanol extract of Arctium lappa(Al) root in Streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 45mg/kg.body wight(b.w) dissolved in citrate buffer. The ethanol extract of Al root was orally administrated once a day for 7 days at a dose of 1,000mg/kg.b.w. The contents of malondialdehyde(MDA) and activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) were significantly decreased(p<0.05) in Al treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The content of glutathione(GSH) and activity of glutathione-s-transferase(GST) was significantly increased(p<0.05). These results indicated that ethanol extract of Al root would have antioxidative effect in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

  • A total number of 20 cat samples including 8 parentage testing and 12 individual identification were genotyped. Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal swab, and genotyped by using 10 microsatellite markers (FCA005, FCA26, FCA224, FCA240, FCA453, FCA293, FCA075, FCA105, FCA229, and FCA651). This method consisted of single PCR procedure and showed reasonable amplification of all PCR products. Genotypes were determined by genetic analyzer. The number of alleles per locus of cats varied from 3 to 8 with a mean value of 5.5. Expected heterozygosity was ranged from 0.390 to 0.827 (mean 0.639) and the total exclusion probability of 10 microsatellite loci was 0.9441. Of the 10 markers, FCA240 marker has relatively high PIC value (>0.7). Of the 8 cats, 7 cats were qualified by compatibility according to the Mendelism. These results can give basic information for developing parentage verification and individual identification system in cat.
