  • From a view point of Hyungsang medicine a study is made on depressive syndromes through 'Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)' ,'Clinical lectures by Mr. Jeesan(芝山先生 臨床學特講)' and other literature. Depressed energy(?) originally meant the disorder of vital energy in the circulation of nature with the lapse of time. In later, it has been changed to mean the disease of man, especially related to the mind. Depressive syndromes come from the stagnation of the Ki or the abnormal circulation(rising, falling, coming and going), which happens when man cannot adjust oneself to the circumstances due to the disharmony between internal and external conditions. Depressive syndrome easily attacks the following types of persons; Dam type person with excessive Ki and deficient Hyung(形), manly woman, womanly man, Bird type person who shows a great variety of emotion, Turtle type person declined to melancholy, Ki type person apt to be depressive, and Shin type person with upward gush of the fire. It also attacks the persons who have smudgy face with the scar between eyebrows, those whose pulses are mixture of two different kinds and those whose pulses extend on two ranges in Jeesan's diagram. Depressive syndromes recorded in 'Donguibogam' are globus hystericus, chest congestion, gastric discomfort, cough and asthma caused by depressed Ki, abdominal mass, edema, and tympanites. The most effective prescriptions for depressive syndromes are Eajintang(二陳湯), Guibitang(歸脾湯), Hyangsosan(香蘇散), and Gamisachiltang(加味四七湯).

  • It is well known that functional dyspepsia is one of the most common diseases. Functional dyspepsia, as defined by Rome I and II criteria, is a known and important gastrointestinal disorder. Symptoms of functional dyspepsia are postprandial fullness, postprandial discomfort, epigastric bloating, epigastric lump sensation, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, regurgitation, eruction, hunger pain, postprandial epigastric pain, heartburn, soreness and anorexia. Treatment of these symptoms are recorded in the Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑). This study is a comparative study between initial medical examination and end of medical treatment with LJTG mentioned in the Donguibogam. After treatment with LJTG, patients showed improvement in all symptoms associated with functional dyspepsia, including general condition. The results of this study suggest that LJTG is an effective treatment for functional dyspepsia.

  • Objectives : Chimgugyeongheombang's Byulhyul, or special points, is a list of extra points, and its acupoint types and positions are different from other books. Its source, however, is kept behind the vale. This paper aims to reveal Byulhyul's contents and source. Methods : Qixiaoliangfang, Jinjiudacheng, and Donguibogam's Gihyul were studied to determine the source of Chimgugyeongheombang's Byulhyul. Results & Conclusions : Chimgugyeongheombang lists a total of 59 special points. It cites 22 meridian points from Qixiaoliangfang, 26 points from Jinjiudacheng, and 36 points from Donguibogam. The Dictionary of Acupuncture records the source of 6 meridian points that aren't found in conventional books, namely the Soongol, Backro, Yeose, Eumdo, Naetaechoong, and Gabgeun points, as Zhenjiujicheng. However, Zhenjiujicheng, in reality, is a book put together with excerpts from three books: Donguibogam, Chimgugyeongheombang, and Leijingtuyi. This means that it's Chimgugyeongheombang that is the source of Zhenjiujicheng. Moreover, all of the points save for Soongol and Eumdo were also used in the acupunctural treatment of 9 diseases including epilepsy. In other words, it can be safely assumed that Heo Im came up with and utilized new special points based on his personal clinical experiences, and this is significant in that he expanded the boundary of the conventional study of acupuncture through his independent experiences and studies.

  • Objectives : This study first acknowledges that cough, which is a light symptom, can act as a link that leads to more serious disease. With this acknowledgement, the study ponders upon how the people of the past, before the introduction of western medicine, attempted to cure the first sign of cough and how to stop it from developing. Methods : China's Eumsunjungyo and Sikgamboncho, and Chosun's Singnyochanyo and Donguibogam are used mainly to analyze the food cure that were used in relation to sea water, and to discover what types of ingredients and preparation forms were used, how they were taken, what types of food cure there were, and how they were used. Results : There was no ingredient used commonly in all of the four literatures. Eumsunjungyo utilized ingredients related to lamb. Singnyochanyo and Donguibogam were both used in Chosun, but some similarities with the Chinese literatures were discovered in terms of food cure since they were put together with their Chinese counterparts as references. Ingredients that were used commonly in two or more of the literatures were ginger, taoren, xingren, honey, pear, liyu, and pig lung. Conclusions : Some staple folk remedies that later becamce cultural cuisines included drinking the water from boiling pear and honey and boiling and eating pears with peppers stuck in them. The eating of ginger together with korean traditional taffy have taken its own form and became saenggang jeonggwa and pyeongang. The oriental food cure method has been continuing among the folk people in the form of traditional food with the food philosophy of edible homologous as its basis.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare the similarities among Donguibogam(DO), Uihagibmun(UI), and Gyeongagjeonseo(GY) in order to examine whether the medical thoughts embedded in the texts can be compared in a quantitative way. Methods : Under an empirical assumption that medical thoughts can be reduced to the frequency of major key words within the text, we selected the fourteen words of the four categories that are commonly used to describe physiology and pathology in Korean medicine as key words. And the frequency of these key words was measured and compared with each other in the three important medical texts in Korea. Results : As a result of quantitative analysis based on ${\chi}^2$ statistic, the key words in the books were distributed most heterogeneously in DO and distributed most homogeneously in UI. In comparison of the similarity analyzed by the same method, DO and UI were significantly more similar than those of DO and UI. The results of the word frequency pattern and the similarities of the book contents(CBDF) show that DO is influenced by UI, and the differences between standardized residuals and homogeneity tells us that internal context of both books are constructed differently. Conclusions : These results support the results of traditional research by experts. With the above, we were able to confirm that medical thoughts can be reduced to the frequency of major key words within the text, and compared through the frequency of such key words.
