Aim & Scope

The first issue of (the Transactions of) the Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Engineers(KIIEE) was in 1987. Journal of the KIIEE is a monthly periodical published on the last day of each month. KIIEE publishes academic and technical research papers on engineering and science in the areas of lighting and electrical installation. KIIEE contains papers related to lighting and electrical installation(facilities) design and application technology such as light & new light source, lighting design, planning, control and advanced display application and electrical installation design, control, construction, management, safety and codes, electrical applications, information & communication facilities, energy & power IT.

    Recently, all-electric house technology became one of the green growth technologies and is integrated with various areas such as electricity, machinery, architecture, material, and etc. Fossil fuel energy is used for heating and hot water supply in the conventional houses but electricity is adopted in the new conceptual houses to maximize advantages of electricity such as amenity, safety, cleanness, and so on. In this paper, an economic analysis is carried out when LED lightings are adopted using the California Standard Practice Test which has been used to estimate the effects of existing DSM (Demand Side Management) programs. The results are able to contribute to the diffusion of all-electric houses and the establishment of basic data and planning for DSM policies.

    This paper was compared for the output voltage and efficiency of the single-phase Z-source inverter(ZSI) according to shoot through duty ratio D. The eight single-phase ZSI in this study are typical ZSI, Embedded ZSI(EZSI), Improved ZSI(IZSI), Quasi ZSI(QZSI), Series ZSI, Trans ZSI(TSI), Switched inductor ZSI(SL-ZSI) and Extended boost ZSI (exZSI). The eight ZSI are divided into two Groups. ; Group-1 which is ZSI with the ordinary voltage boost factor B, and Group-2 which is ZSI with the maximum voltage boost factor B. For the execution of the proposed study, the PSIM simulation was achieved under the condition of input DC voltage=150[V] of ZSI, load =30[${\Omega}$] and 60[Hz] output filter. The output voltage and efficiency of each ZSI were calculated within the limits of D=0.1~0.4. As a result, the output peak voltage of Group-2 was suddenly increased in a specified duty ratio D, and its efficiency was rapidly decreased. On the contrary, Group-1 shown the output and efficiency characteristics without sudden change compared to Group-2 despite the duty ratio increase. The efficiency of the Group-2 was sharply declined at duty ratio D of the most output voltage, but, in case of Group-1, the efficiency was slightly declined. Finally, the input DC current of ZSI with DCM and CCM was discussed.

    This paper presents an improved phase-shift pulse-width modulation (PWM) full-bridge converter using a blocking capacitor. As the proposed converter reduces the circulation energy by inserting only one series blocking capacitor at the primary side of the conventional phase-shift PWM full-bridge converter structure, it improves the operation characteristics of the conventional converter. In this paper, first, the operation of conventional phase-shift PWM full-bridge converter is roughly reviewed, and then the operational principle of the proposed converter is classified and explained by each mode. After that, a prototype design example based on the operational principle is shown. Then, the improved operation characteristics of the proposed converter are actually verified through the experimental results.

    This paper proposes a new intelligent diagnosis equipment for the partial discharge, which keeps deteriorating the insulating materials inside electric machineries, ultimately leading to electrical breakdown. In order to simulate experimentally the partial discharge inside the electric machinery, the tip-to-plate, the sphere-to-plate, the sphere-to-sphere and the plate-to-plate electrodes are used respectively, of which the gaps are 1[mm], 3[mm] or 5[mm] and the applied voltages are 3[kV], 5[kV] or 7[kV]. Ceramic coupler sensor and FIR digital filter are used to measure the partial discharge and the artificial neural network is used for the deterioration diagnosis of the electric machinery. The microprocessor of PD diagnosis equipment is DSP (TMS320C6713) with FPGA (Cyclone II). The results of the real-time and on-line experiments performed with the developed equipment are also explained.

    The motion of a conductive spherical particle under uniform electric field is investigated in order to find a suitable method for removing the conducting solid impurities contained in liquid plastic. When the positive dc voltage applied to the upper electrode, the vertical up-and-down motion of a charged particle by electrostatic force is observed by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a high-speed video camera. The experimental data of the static threshold voltage by which the particle starts to move toward the counter electrode in air or silicone oil are in good agreement with theoretical value. When the applied voltage is larger than the static threshold voltage, the particle motion pattern in silicone oil consists of four stages: upward motion, stopping at the upper electrode, downward motion and stopping at the lower electrode. The stopping motion on the electrode is thought to be caused by the liquid flow accompanied by the particle motion. The particle charge calculated by integrating the pulse current, which is generated by the charge exchange between the electrode and the particle, is approximately 0.1~0.25 times of the theoretical value. This study is expected to help understand the electric properties of microparticles in oil circuit breaker (OCB) and oil transformer and improve their performance and longevity.

    This paper presents a new gain scheduling speed controller of permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSG) for MW-class direct-driven wind turbine systems. The proposed gain scheduling speed controller performs the speed tracking at more than one operating point, and the first-order torque observer estimates the turbine torque which is needed to precisely control the speed of PMSG. The proposed speed controller verifies that the PMSG can successfully follow the reference speed which is determined via the maximum power point tracking(MPPT) control and pitch control under turbulent wind conditions. The proposed speed control algorithm is simulated using Simulink and its performance is confirmed through comparison with the results by PI control method.

    This paper presents a power quality compensation of the autotransformer-fed railway system using Matlab/SimPowerSystem and especially investigates two installation methods of the shunt active power filter (SAPF) along the autotransformer-fed railway systems; one configuration describes the SAPF installed at the substation and the other is the SAPF at the sectioning post. Also, the novel SAPF control algorithms based on the synchronous reference frame are proposed. A comparative study on two SAPF configurations and the corresponding control algorithms is investigated comprehensively through the case study.

    In this paper, a multi-agent control system for DC-coupled photovoltaic (PV), fuel cell (FC), ultracapacitor(UC) and battery hybrid power system is studied for commercial buildings & apartment buildings microgrid. In this proposed system, the PV system provides electric energy to the electrolyzer to produce hydrogen for future use and transfer to the load side, if possible. Whenever the PV system cannot completely meet load demands, the FC system provides power to meet the remaining load. A multi-agent system based-power management and control algorithm is proposed for the hybrid power system by taking into account the characteristics of each power source. The main works of this paper are hybridization of alternate energy sources with FC systems using long and short storage strategies to build the multi-agent control system with pragmatic design, and a dynamic model proposed for a PV/FC/UC/battery bank hybrid power generation system. A dynamic simulation model for the hybrid power system has been developed using Matlab/Simulink, SimPowerSystems and Stateflow. Simulation results are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-agent control and management system for building microgrid.

    Induction motor is most widely used as the driving power in the industrial site. Induction motor current is composed of two parts, magnetizing current and load current. Load current uses energy what is doing the work. Load current varies with load variance but magnetizing current is constant, regardless of load variation. Magnetizing current needs for establishing the rotating magnetic field of induction motor and lags behind the voltage. Generally capacitor is used for power-factor compensation of inductive load. Self-excitation occurs when the capacitive reactive current from the capacitor is greater than the magnetizing current of the induction motor. When this occurs, excessive voltages can result on the terminals of the motor. This excessive voltage can cause insulation degradation and ultimately result in motor insulation failure. In this paper, we analyzed that how the magnetizing current and condenser current is operating at the allowable limit by the load variation. Condenser current is below allowable limit of magnetizing current but magnetizing current is above allowable limit at the lower load operation condition.

    Development and use of renewable energy due to environmental problems and depletion of energy affect grid-connected power system around the world. Therefore this paper analyzes the characteristic of gird connected photovoltaic power generation system which it is available to connect the utility. Renewable energy photovoltaic power system has been linked to the system to analyze the impact of photovoltaic system. MATLAB / Simulink program is modeled and analyzed on power quality of a photovoltaic power plant. It is measured that power data for the Grid connected photovoltaic power plant with instantaneous measuring, 3sec measuring, 10min measuring for 7 days. Harmonic field measurement have shown that the harmonic contents of a waveform varies with time. A cumulative probability approach is the most commonly used method to solve time varying harmonics. so, it is used 50[%] cumulative probability approach. This paper provides an in depth analysis on power quality field measurement of the Grid connected photovoltaic power plant.

    This paper is about the design of 3-axis magnetic sensor module which detects parking and moving vehicle. For the sensor module, MR Sensor from Honeywell of which maximum measurement range is ${\pm}2$[G] is used. It also consisted of amplifier and sensor filter and fabricated $30{\times}50$[mm] PCB. Fabricated sensor module produced helmholtz coil of which the length is 1.2[m] of 3-axis to know the performance. It installed sensor module at the center and measured the detected magnetic field. In result, 3-axis were detected as 0.2~0.3[mG] and the drift of the fluctuation of magnetic field was stabilized at 0.03[mG] unit. For the performance evaluation of the vehicle detection, after the entry and parking of the vehicle, variation of magnetic field was measured as 0.323~0.695[G] which the average 0.5[G] of the earth magnetic field was the center and the range of variation was confirmed as 0.37[G]. Therefore, the designed magnetic sensor can be used as the vehicle detection sensor module.

    The conventional grounding impedance of a counterpoise is calculated as a function of the length of the counterpoise by use of the distributed parameter circuit model with an application of the EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program). The adequacy of the distributed parameter circuit model is examined and verified by comparison of the simulated and the measured results. The conventional grounding impedance of the counterpoise is analyzed for the first short stroke and subsequent short stroke currents. As a result, the simulated results show that the minimum conventional grounding impedance gives at a specified length of the counterpoise. The shorter the time taken to reach the peak of injected currents, the shorter the length of the counterpoise having the minimum conventional grounding impedance. We also present the critical lengths of the counterpoise for short stroke currents as a function of soil resistivity. Based on these results, it is necessary to compute the length of the counterpoise in a specified soil resistivity which satisfies both the low conventional grounding impedance requirement whilst also providing a suitable ground resistance in order to obtain an economical design and installation of the counterpoise.

    This paper, as the second part of the paper, dealt with the field test and test results to validate PSS(Power System Stabilizer) parameters which are previously tuned in Part 1 paper. In Part 1 of the paper, the selection of parameters such as lead-lag time constants for phase compensation and system gain was optimized by using linear & eigenvalue analyses and they were verified through the time-domain transient stability analysis. In part 2, the performance of PSS was finally verified by the generator's on-line field test. Through the comparisons of simulation results and measured data before and after tuning of the PSS, the models of generator and its controllers including AVR, Governor and PSS used in the simulation are verified and confirmed.

    In this paper, the design and analysis of a reconfigurable modular structure, which reforms itself according to the change of the environment and realize appropriate forms and motions, are dealt with. This modular is a free structure from the restrictions with constraints about fixed environment and has various forms and motions by combining units. The form of this unit has a shape of a square with 7 centimeters side each, and has a structure which can be combined in a chain-shape or a lattice-shape. Additionally, The structure has a mobility by being equipped with wheels so that it can be combined for itself. In this paper, all the wireless controllers, sensor system, and communicating method between modules according to module structures were suggested and transformation method to be transformed to shape of snakes, caterpillars were presented. Moreover, simulations for each method were performed to show the validity of the motions including motor torque analysis. All the motions suggested were realized and experimented, whereby the availability of the designed mechanism and algorithm was verified with the result of experiments.

    Technical requirements for medium voltage class circuit breaker were harmonized by IEC and IEEE, and IEC newly adopted the requirements for class S2 circuit-breaker for overhead-line with the ratings of high-frequency TRV(Transient Recovery Voltage), which IEEE already adopted. Under these circumstances, KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute) studied testing technologies and facilities, which enable to perform interrupting capacity tests for class S2 circuit-breaker. As results, KERI could carry out interrupting capacity tests for medium voltage class circuit breaker rated up to 3-phase 52[kV] 40[kA], which satisfies the IEC standard.

    This paper deals with the impact analysis of the impedance change of 345/154[kV] power transformers on the KEPCO system's overall performance. Through the steady-state and dynamic analysis of power system, the maximum available impedance of power transformers were determined. Checking violation of short-circuit current ratings and transformer overload, parallel operation of power transformers, calculation of voltage variation ratio according to the impedance changes of power transformers are included in the steady-state analysis. In addition, transient and voltage stability analysis are also performed in the study. Available magnitudes to be able to change the impedance of the transformers in KEPCO system are finally determined in the paper.
