To investigate antitumor component of Lyophyllum decastes, the aqueous extract of its shake-cultured mycelia was subjected to antitumor test against sarcoma 180 cells implanted in ICR mice. The extract showed an inhibition ratio of 65.4% and was found to consist of a polysaccharide moiety and a protein moiety. After purification with DEAE-Sephadex A-50 ion exchange chromatography, Fraction D showed the highest inhibition ratio of 75.7%. The antitumor constituent was examined for immunoaccelerating activity and was found to increase macrophage accumulation in the peritoneal cavity and plaque forming cells of the spleen cells. It was named lyophyllan after the genus name.

Cirsium xanthocanthum (Compositae) is a perennial herb. From the roots of this plant which were used for arthritis, neuralgia and carbuncular abscess as folkloric remedies, linarin, mp $255{\sim}257^{\circ}$, was isolated and identified by chemical reactions and spectral data with authentic samples.

Polyphenol oxidase was purified from acetone powder extract of the root of Ixeris sonchifolia. The enzyme obtained by ammonium sulfate fractionation and sephadex G-200 gelfiltration gave 51-fold purification over the crude extract. The purified enzyme showed activity toward chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and pyrocatechol. The kinetics of thermal inactivation of the enzyme followed first-order reaction. Potassium cyanide and cysteine were potent inhibitors.

The whole plant of Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke (Rosaceae) which has been used in folklore in treating amenorrhea, inflammation, fever and traumatic injuries, in detoxifying and breaking up clots, was studied. The pharmacological test showed that the water extract had estrogenic and histaminergic actions, but no antiserotonin action. As a result of systematic separation in order to detect the active compounds revealing the estrogenic effect, the active compounds were found in the ether fraction. TLC of the ether fraction revealed 8 spots. Among them three major spots (Rf=0.54, 037, 0.31) were separated by preparative TLC. Some chemical properties of those major spots suggested that they were phenolic compounds, but that they were neither linoleic acid nor ${\beta}-sitosterol$ previously reported.

The investigation was aimed to study the effect of ginseng ethanol extract on the hepatic ethanol-metabolizing enzyme activity in vivo. The extract (100mg/kg/day) was administered orally to Sprague-Dawley rats for $7{\sim}10$ days and their microsomal ethanol oxidizing system(MEOS) and catalase activities were measured. The MEOS activity in the rat treated with the extract was not significantly different from that of the normal group. Microsomal fraction containing MEOS was separated and the MEOS activity was measured after preincubation for 5, 60 and 180 min, respectively. There were no significant differences in MEOS activities between the normal and treated groups preincubated for 5, 60 and 180 min. The activity in the rat treated with single i.p. injection of 95% $CCl_4$ (0.5ml/kg) was decreased by 48%, compared to the normal group and in the rat treated with the extract (100mg/kg) for $7{\sim}10$ days, the decrease of the MEOS activity was potentiated. Catalase activity in the rat treated with the extract (100mg/kg) was similar to that obtained from the normal group.

A ginseng preparation consisting of ginseng ext., lycii fructus ext., four vitamins and caffeine was chosen and its efficacy was evaluated with respect to nutritional supplement, antifatigue activity and liver protective action. Animals administered orally in both one-third and three fold doses of the preparation showed no significant increments of their body weights when compared with those of the normal animals, suggesting no supplemental activity. However, the preparation in the above two doses significantly prolonged swimming time to 53 and 63%, respectively. Ginseng and lycii fructus ext. were found to be responsible for the antifatigue activity. And also the preparation significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation of mouse liver after ethanol-induced acute intoxication.

The essential oil fraction of Leonurus sibiricus was analyzed by TLC and gas chromatography. By utilizing silica gel column, a ketone compound, m.w. 167, was isolated from the essential oil. The essential oil showed considerably the diuretic action, but the water extract exhibited weak action. This diuretic action of the water extract was potentiated by combined administration of essential oil. On the isolated rabbit's uterus the essential oil decreased spontanous movement and showed relaxation.

The structure of tuguaconitine, MP $196{\sim}198^{\circ}C$, a new diterpene alkaloid isolated from the roots of Aconitum sibiricum P., was studied. Its empirical formula is $C_{23}H_{35}NO_7$ and spectroscopic evidence shows that the base contains three methoxyl, three hydroxyl and one N-ethyl groups. The acute toxicities of most of Aconitum species were strong and the acute toxicity of the alkaloid fraction of A. sibiricum was decreased by Glycyrrhizae, black bean or Zingiberis extract.
