Objectives : The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of Meridian Gi in $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)$\lrcorner$, specially one of the movement properties like that comings and goings of Gi. Methods : Through searching concepts and properties of Meridian Gi in several chapters of $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)$\lrcorner$, many phrases concerned with that properties could be explained and reconstructed into new motional shape of Meridian Gi. Results : The basic characters of comings and goings of Meridian Gi or genuine Gi originate from food essence, and that are like a kind of waves. The most important moments of acupuncture treatment is such time of it's short passing the acupoints, carrying out tonifying and purging methods by controlling the spirit. Conclusions : The Meridian Gi consists of anti-pathogenic Gi so called genuine Gi and pathogenic Gi. Medical doctor must correctly knows the flow of Meridian Gi to operate tonifying and purging method of acupuncture treatments in order to get the desired results. Also maintaining very sensitive state in diagnostic process, the most important key points is to control the spirit and adjust mental activities of both doctors and patients. The motional properties of Meridian Gi are actually concerned with the arrival of Gi and reinforcement-reduction along and against Meridian Gi.

The aim of this study was to understand the function & the character of meridians through the theory of Gae-Hap-Chu (開闔樞). Methods : First, We researched the meaning of Gae-Hap-Chu from Internal Classic (內經). Then, We investigated the theory of Gae-Hap-Chu (開闔樞) comparing with the principle of Oriental studies. The last, we considered the function & the character of Gae-Hap-Chu (開闔樞). Results & Conclusions : Gae-Hap-Chu represents distributing-gathering-controlling of meridians and suggests the place of meridians acting. Gae-Hap-Chu is true to the principle of Sam-Jae (三才原理) and interrelationship of Jang-Bu organ (臟腑相關) is also true to the study of Sang-Su (象數學). Descending & ascending meridians make a interrelationship of Jang-Bu organ individually. The function of gathering & distributing is expanded on Yang meridians. Heart & Gallbladder Meridians control Hap (闔) and Kidney& Triple Energizer meridians control Gae (開).

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to inquire clinical meaning and characteristic of Eight extra meridians(奇經八脈) by researching building and progression of Eight extra meridians theory. Results : As a result of research of building and progression of Eight extra meridians(奇經八脈) theory, we can regard that the origin of Eight extra meridians was based on lower Danjeon(丹田) which was the root of Primordial energy and the origin of the Twelve meridians and collaterals(十二經脈) was based on Middle energizer which was the root of Acquired energy. On this, we could know that Eight extra meridians and the Twelve meridians and collaterals are based on Primordial energy and Acquired energy and function of Eight extra meridians and the Twelve meridians and collaterals are complement each other. So, we can say that considering the Twelve meridians and collaterals means that is valued on Acquired energy clinically, and considering Eight extra meridians means that is valued on Primordial energy in health preserving method (養生).

Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism and the clinical significance of prohibition of acupuncture of LI4 and SP6 during the period of pregnancy. Methods : It was investigated the prohibition of acupuncture during the period of pregnancy based on the literature reviews. Previous studies identified the acupuncture treatment of animal and clinical studies during the period of pregnancy and labor in China Academic Journal(CAJ). These papers were classified and investigated to clarify the rationale of the prohibition of acupuncture during the period of pregnancy. Results and Conclusions : The contraindicated points during the period of pregnancy are Hapgok (LI4), Samumgyo (SP6), Songmun (CV5), Kwanwon (CV4), Sosang (LU11), Chium (BL67), Kollyun (BL60). The uterine contraction can be induced by the stimuli of Hapgok (LI4) via endocrine system and Samumgyo (SP6) via nervous system. Both Hapgok (LI4) and Samumgyo (SP6) also can be used in various diseases such as induction of abortion, facilitation of parturition, stabilization of embryos, cross birth and so on.

Methods : First, We summarized the cause of each disease in the Rhinological section(in the Oehyeong chapter) of the Dong Ui BO Gam. Then, We explained the rationale of acupoint-selection referring to the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupoints in the Dong Ui BO Gam, character of each acupoints, flow of meridian pathways and specific acupoints etc. Results and Conclusions : Total 15 acupoints were used in the Rhinological section(in the Oehyeong chapter) of the Dong Ui BO Gam. Most of acupoints were specific acupoints. But, some rationale of acupoint-selection were explained by the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupoints in the Dong Ui BO Gam, flow of meridian pathways etc.

But, some rationale of acupoint-selection were explained by the cause of disease, physiology of the Oriental medicine, other uses of each acupoints in the Dong Ui Bo Gam, flow of meridian pathways etc.

Objectives : Moxibustion therapy is one of the most popular oriental treatments in Korea. In this study, we operate the in-depth interview for use of moxibustion therapy in Korea. Methods : Survey questions were developed based on consensus of acupuncture professors. The list of the Korean medical doctors with experiences more than 10 years is provided by the Association of the Korean Oriental Medicine. The in-depth interview was conducted in 30 Korean medical doctors who answered in the previous telephone survey that they use moxibustion therapy for more than 30 % of patients everyday. Interview survey with them were conducted by the well-trained interviewers of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine in medical researcher from 22th May to 28th June 2007. Results : Korean medical doctors prefer to use the moxibustion with moxa stick (83.9%). The most common treatment disease was musculo-skeletal disorder (28.9%), gynecology (14.1%), digestive disorder (28.6%). The most common treatment area was the abdomen (35.3%), back (22.5%), lower extremity (15.8%) and upper extremity (16.9%). Indirect moxibustion’s was as frequent as 73.5% of moxibustion method. The most common instrument for treating was mini-moxa of manufactured goods (39.3%). Most Korean medical doctors (48.8%) took up the position that bring symptom relief following good treatment area. 'High preferences of patients' (32.7%) was one of moxibustion strong points but 'Lots of smell and smoke' (54.7%)' was a weak points. The most common side effects was the 'slight burn' (34.9%), 'skin rash' (22.5%), 'skin pruritus' (23.8%) Conclusions : This survey provides unique insight into the perception of the Korea medical doctor at moxibustion therapy. Future research needs to provide more in-depth insight into doctor views of the experience.

Objective : This study was performed to evaluate oriental medical treatment for ADHD in childhood Methods : We analyzed DSM-4 and ADS scores before and after the treatments, such as acupuncture, decoction of medical ingredients, correction treatment and oriental kinesitherapy, of ADHD in 12 elementary school students who have been visited Byon oriental medical clinic (Dogok-dong Seoul) from March to October, 2007. And all patients were treated 2 times a week for 3 month. Results : In this study, oriental medical treatments, such as acupuncture, decoction of medical ingredients, correction treatment and oriental kinesitherapy, to balance left and right brains, which is based on oriental medicine theory, was not only effective for treating attention deficit and hyperactivity which is the major problem of children in ADHD, but also effective for resistance, sociality, homology and communication. And we concluded that oriental medical treatments, which treats imbalance disorder of brain, were effective for treating ADHD.

Objectives : Hyangsapyungwisan (HPS) has been used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases including of arthralgia, myalgia in traditional Korean medicine. However, the medical actions of HPS have not been clearly investigated. The aim of this study was to elucidate the antiradical and antioxidant activity of the extract for herb-acupuncture (HPS-HA) obtained from HPS. Methods & Results : HPS-HA exhibited a stronger inhibition rate (55.5%) on lipid peroxidation of rat liver homogenate induced by $FeCl_2$-ascorbic acid. In addition, HPS-HA markedly interfered with hydroxylradical generation through iron ions chelating action. While pro-oxidant effect of HPS-HA was nearly undetectable at concentrations of 0.5-10㎎/mL. Moerover, HPS-HA revealed a potent antiradical activities on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, superoxide anions, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite. Furthermore, HPS-HA inhibited copper- and AAPH-mediated oxidation of human low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and also suppressed the relative electrophoretic mobility of LDL. HPS-HA showed strong protective activity against oxidative damage of HUVECs induced by SIN-1. Conclusions : These results suggest that HPS-HA may be effective in protecting against oxidative diseases.

목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 폐열해수, 장열번갈, 습열사리, 황달, 옹종정창등의 치료효능이 있는 연교약침액이 사람 기관지 상피세포주인 A549에 TNF-${\alpha}$ 및 IL-4를 투여하여 나타나는 케모카인의 발현에 미치는 영향을 관찰하고자 하는 것이다. 방법 : A549 세포주에 연교약침액을 농도별로 (0, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 50 ${\mu}g/ml$) 전처치한 후, TNF-${\alpha}$ 및 IL-4를 투여하여 RANTES, eotaxin 및 TARC의 분비를 유도하고, 케모카인 분비량을 ELISA법을 이용하여 측정하였다. 실험에 사용한 연교약침액의 농도에 따른 세포 독성 유무를 관찰하고자 MTT assay를 수행하여 세포생존율을 측정하였다.결과 : 연교약침액의 농도가 세포내에서 독성을 일으키는지 MTT assay로 측정한 결과 세포독성은 관찰되지 않았으며, 연교약침액은 TNF-${\alpha}$ 및 IL-4투여로 인하여 증가된 RANTES, eotaxin 및 TARC의 분비를 통계학적으로 유의하게 감소시킴을 관찰하였다. 결론 : 연교약침액은 천식과 알레르기 질환에 관련이 있는 케모카인의 효과적인 감소를 이끌어 냄을 확인하였으며, 이러한 결과는 연교약침액이 천식 및 알레르기 환자에 대해 효과적인 임상 활용이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

Objectives & Methods : The purpose of this study is to observe the anti-oxidative effects of electroacupuncture to Yinlingquan(SP9) in AAPH induced oxidative stress of rats. The author performed several experimental items including measurements of body weight, levels of albumin, total bilirubin, LDL-cholesterol, GOT and GPT in serum, levels of SOD, glutathione, catalase, NO and MDA in liver, histological analysis of liver. The conclusions are as follows. Results : 1. In the SP9-EA group, the level of LDL-cholesterol was significantly decreased in comparison with that of the holder group and control group. 2. In the SP9-EA group, SOD activity, glutathione concentration in liver were increased, and NO concentration was decreased significantly in comparison with those of the control group and the holder group. 3. In the SP9-EA group, the density of liver tissue was maintained more similarly to the normal group in comparison with those of the control group and the holder group. 5. The results of the SP9-NR group showed similar tendencies with those of the SP9-EA group, but the effects were lower than those of the SP9-EA group. Conclusion : These results suggest that electroacupuncture at SP9 has an anti oxidative effect through suppressing both the reduction of anti-oxidative enzymes and production of oxidized substances.

목 적 : 본 연구의 목적은 양릉천 침 처치 시 C57BL/6 생쥐의 중뇌 흑질에 위치한 도파민성 신경세포 사멸 억제 효과를 조직화학 염색법을 이용하여 Tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)와 laminin의 발현으로 관찰하고자 한다. 실험방법 : 실험에 이용한 동물은 C57BL/6 생쥐로, 매일 25mg/kg의 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)를 5일간 주사하였고, 매일 MPTP 주사한 뒤 2시간 후에 양릉천에 침치료를 시행하였으며 MPTP 주사를 종료한 뒤 침치료는 7일동안 계속 시행하였다. 마지막 MPTP 주사 7일 후에 동물을 희생하여 뇌를 적출하고 고정하였다. 침효과를 확인하기 위해 Thyrosine hydroxylase(TH), laminin의 발현 변화 정도를 조직염색화학법으로 이용하여 확인하였다. 각 그룹간의 유의성 검증은 one-way ANOVA를 이용하였다. 결 과 : 도파민성 신경세포 선택적인 신경독소인 MPTP에 대한 양릉천 침처치에 의한 신경보호 효과를 도파민신경세포의 표지자인 TH 발현을 면역화학조직염색법으로 관찰하였다. 대조군에 비해 MPTP 처치 군의 신경세포 사멸이 유의적으로 감소하였고(P <0.05), MPTP + 침처치 군에서 증가되는 양상을 확인하였다 (P <0.05). 또한 도파민성 신경세포내에 존재하는 laminin의 발현정도 역시 대조군보다 MPTP 처치 군에서 유의적으로 감소하였고, MPTP + 침처치 군에서 증가되는 양상을 확인하였다 (P <0.05). 결 론 : MPTP에 의한 도파민성 신경세포 손상에 대한 양릉천 침처치의 신경보호 효과는 세포외 기질중의 하나인 laminin의 발현 정도를 조절하여 비롯되는 것으로 사료된다.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of herbal-acupuncture with Acanthopanacis cortex extract (AC-HA) at KI10 (Eumgok) on osteoporosis in ovariectomized (OVX) ddy mice. Methods : We carried out several experimental items to analyze the changes in body weight, uterine weight, uterus index, tibial length, the ash bone weight, tibial BMD, serum ALP, serum creatinine, serum osteocalcin, serum Ca, and the levels of Ca, P, Ca/P ratio in tibia, and we performed histological and histomorphological analysis as well. Results : Tibial BMD was significantly decreased by OVX, while significantly increased by AC-HA at KI10. Serum creatinine level was significantly increased by OVX, while significantly decreased by AC-HA at KI10. Serum osteocalcin level was significantly increased by OVX, while significantly decreased by AC-HA at KI10. Tibial TBV(trabecular bone volume) was significantly decreased by OVX, while significantly increased by AC-HA at KI10. AC-HA at KI10 significantly suppressed the OVX-induced increase of GPL(growth plate length) of tibia in mice. Conclusion : These results suggest that AC-HA at KI10 has a therapeutic effect on osteoporosis in OVX mice.

Objectives : We studied on anti-allergic effects of Arctii Fructus Herbal Acupuncture(AFHA) and Arctii Fructus Herbal Acupuncture Solution(AF). Methods : In vivo, Animals were herbal-acupunctured AFHA at both ST36 three times for 5 days. Then, we investigated compound 48/80-induced active systemic anaphylaxis(ASA) using ICR mice and anti-DNP IgE-induced passive cutaneous anaphylaxis(PCA) using Sprague Dawley rat. In vitro, we measured cell viability, b-hexosaminidase, IL-4 and TNF-a release from RBL-2H3 cells after treatment of AF of various concentrations. Results : In vivo, AFHA pretreatments at both ST36 inhibited compound 48/80-induced ASA. PCA was inhibited by AFHA pretreatments at both ST36. In vitro, AF treatments were not affect on cell viability and inhibited b-hexosaminidase, IL-4 and TNF-a release. Conclusions : These results suggest that AFHA and AF may be beneficial in the inhibition of allergic inflammatory response.

Objectives : Acupoints of LR1(Dadun)${\cdot}$HT9(Shaochong), KI10(Yingu)${\cdot}$HT3(Shaohai) are used as controlling the diseases from heart problems. Especially, when they are used, tonification or sedation techniques method is taken as a controlling the medication for an early stroke in the Korean medicine. So the aim of this study is to investigate the anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects of Acupuncture techniques of tonification or sedation at LR1${\cdot}$HT9, KI10${\cdot}$HT3 on the focal ischemia induced by intraluminal filament insertion in rats. Materials and Methods : The focal ischemia was induced by intraluminal filament insertion into middle cerebral artery. The animals were divided into five groups (n=7 in each group) : Control group, no therapy group after ischemia induced; AT-1; acupuncture therapy group at LR1${\cdot}$HT9, KI10${\cdot}$HT3 after ischemia-induced. AT-2; acupuncture therapy at right LR1, HT9(forward direction), KI10${\cdot}$HT3(opposite direction) inserting to the direction of route of the each meridian. AT3; acupuncture therapy at right LR1, HT9(twirling forward with the thumb of right hand 9 times), KI10${\cdot}$HT3(twirling forward with the forefinger of right hand 6 times) AT-4; acupuncture therapy at right LR1, HT9(forward direction, twirling forward with the thumb of right hand 9 times), KI10${\cdot}$HT3(opposite direction, twirling forward with the forefinger of right hand 6 times) inserting to the direction of route of the each meridian. The anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects of Acupuncture techniques of tonification or sedation at LR1, HT9, KI10${\cdot}$HT3 were observed by Bax, Bcl-2, mGluR5, Cytochrome c, Cresyl violet and ChAT-stain. Results : The intensity of Bax and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio were increased in ACU-2 and ACU-4 group but decreased in ACU-3 group. The intensity of mGluR5 was increased in ACU-1, ACU-2, ACU-3 and ACU-4 group. The intensity of cytochrome c was decreased in ACU-3 and ACU-4 group. The density of neurons stained by Cresyl violet and ChAT were increased in ACU-1, ACU-3 and ACU-4 group. Conclusions : Our study suggests that acupuncture therapy of tonification at LR1, HT9 by twirling forward with the thumb of right hand 9times, sedation at KI10${\cdot}$HT3 by twirling forward with the forefinger of right hand 6 times after perpendicularly inserting needle shows anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects on cholinergic neuron in focal cerebral ischemia of the stroke in rats.

Objectives : The warm needling technique is the method in combining the effects of acupuncture needle with the effects of moxibustion. We need to standardize the characteristics of the warm needling technique in order to get more systematic and objective result in operation mechanism and effects and then get more clinical abilities in these fields. Methods : In this study, using of labview system on the warm needling technique we studied about measurement and comparison with partial temperature changes according to the position of ignition. Results & conclusion : When we measured the warm needling's partial temperature according to the position of ignition, the bottom ignition method got the higher result on the peak temperature measured at 2cm below the head than the apex ignition method.
