Aim & Scope
The Journal of International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (JICEMS) is going to be published quarterly. It is a joint publication of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE), the Institute of Electrical Engineering of Japan(IEEJ), and the China Electrotechnical Society (CES). It includes all topics in the fields of electric machines, power electronics and emerging energy systems.

The reconfigurability of FPGA devices allows designers to evaluate, test and validate a new control algorithm; a new component or prototypes without damaged the real system with the so-called hardware co-simulation. The present paper uses the Xilinx System Generator (XSG) environment to establish and validate a new nonlinear estimator for the rotor time constant inverse that will be exploited to improve the indirect rotor field control of induction motor. -
3-phase Induction machines are being used in industry and dq transformation from 3 phase of a, b, c is commonly used to analyze these machines. The equivalent circuits of d and q axis are however generally cross coupled and not simple to analyze. In this study, an analysis method of 3ph induction motor considering current regulator using dq transformation and matrix vector is proposed and it can explain the 3ph induction motor physically. This model does not need the separating process of d and q components. With this technique, the model becomes simple, is easy to understand in physical, and can get the same results with those from the other dq models. These simulation results of the proposed model are compared with those of other models for the conformation of the proposed method.

This paper presents a successful stand-alone pico-hydro generation system using a high-efficiency interior permanent-magnet (IPM) synchronous generator. A 1-kW 4-pole V-type IPM generator with low voltage regulation is used for laboratory test in stand-alone hydro energy conversion system. It has been found from experimental results that the constant output voltage is supplied stably by the proposed system under wide speed range.

This paper discusses stability of new simplified sensorless vector control systems of induction motors (IM). The simplified sensorless systems estimate the flux angle by using the output voltage of d-axis PI current controller to achieve the q-axis flux zero. Two simplified sensorless systems are studied. The difference of two systems is the presence or absence of a q-axis PI current controller. The systems stability is compared by deriving linear state equations and showing root loci and unstable regions. Furthermore, transient responses and experiment results make clear the stability of the proposed system. -

We investigated the harmonic voltages generated by a synchronous machine adding d-axis and q-axis harmonic field windings to reduce the harmonics in a power line. First, electronic circuits such as a frequency multiplier, band-pass filter, and phase shifter were newly designed and made to carry out the experiment. Next, an experimental circuit, for which an AC voltage of frequency 6f synchronized to the power line voltage of frequency f could be obtained, was constructed to examine the generation of harmonic voltage in more detail. Finally, an experiment involving the generation of harmonic voltage was performed using an experimental synchronous generator with harmonic windings in the d-axis and q-axis. In this paper, the power spectrum and the waveforms of the harmonic voltages in the armature winding are presented. Moreover, the values calculated from theoretical expressions of harmonic voltages in armature winding are compared with the values obtained by the experiment. -

The paper presents a systematic comparison of four topologies of the interior permanent magnet machine (IPMM) designed for low speed applications. This comparative study investigates the suitability of the concentrated winding and distributed winding in the stator and the flat-shaped or V-shaped magnets in the rotor poles. The paper also studies the inductance characteristics of the designs using finite element analysis. Various steps taken to minimize the cogging torque and torque ripple in the studied machines were also discussed in details. -
This paper describes problems of the sensorless starting of horizontal axis washing machines with direct drive and suggests solution, which was experimentally verified. Horizontal axis washing machines have very difficult conditions for the drive starting, especially at full load. Inertia of the tub and water, torque from the laundry make load torque at starting higher than rated one and sometimes even higher than the maximum torque of the motor, which makes sensorless starting extremely challenging task. This paper suggests modified open-loop starting, where control system is closed shortly after beginning at low speed and rotates the drum until laundry restructuring. To ensure proper work of the sensorless algorithm at low speed additional measures for increasing of the estimation algorithm performance have been taken. These measures include special algorithm for the drive parameters estimation, which has been developed and verified by the experimental results.

Industrial Static Var Generator (SVG) is typically applied at or near the load center to mitigate voltage fluctuation, flicker, phase unbalance, non-sine distortion or other load-related disturbance. Special attention is paid to the influence of grid voltage quality on SVG current, the non-sine distortion and unbalance of grid voltage causes not only the AC current distortion and unbalance but also the DC voltage fluctuation. In order to let the inverter voltage contain the fundamental negative sequence and harmonic component corresponding to the grid voltage, a new dual-loop control scheme is proposed to suppress the influence in this paper. The harmonic and negative sequence voltage decomposition algorithm and DC voltage control are also introduced. All these analyses can guide the practical applications. The simulation results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the present control strategy and analyses.

Use of nonlinear loads, such as power converters, fluorescent lamps and adjustable speed motor drives, is expected to grow rapidly. All of these loads inject harmonic currents. This paper presents the active filtering of the harmonic distortion generated by the compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). The Instantaneous active and reactive power theory (the p-q Theory) is used to design the control of parallel active filter. The control scheme has been verified using Matlab/Simulink with SimPower Systems through a set of simulation tests under different load conditions. Also, the tuning of the active power filter is performed to improve the quality of the electrical power supply. -
This paper presents an improved direct power control (DPC) strategy for grid-connected voltage source inverter (VSI) under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions. Based on the mathematic model of VSI with the negative sequence, 5th and 7th harmonic voltage components consideration, a PI controller is used in the proposed DPC strategy to achieve the average output power regulation. Furthermore, vector PI controller with the resonant frequency tuned at the two times and six times grid fundamental frequency is adopted to regulate both negative and harmonic components, and then two alternative targets of the balanced/sinusoidal current and smooth active/reactive output power can be achieved. Finally, simulation results based on MATLAB validate the availability of the proposed DPC strategy.

Three-phase four-wire distribution systems are used for both three-phase three-wire loads and single-phase two-wire consumer appliances in South Korea, Myanmar and other countries. Unbalanced load conditions frequently occur in these distribution systems. These unbalanced load conditions cause unbalanced voltages for three-phase and single-phase loads, and increase the loss in the distribution transformer. In this paper, we propose constant DC capacitor voltage control based strategy for the active load balancer (ALB) in the three-phase four-wire distribution systems. Constant DC capacitor voltage control is always used in active power line conditioners. The proposed control strategy does not require any computation blocks of the active and reactive currents on the distribution systems. Balanced source-side currents with a unity power factor are obtained without any calculation block of the unbalanced active and reactive components on the load side. The basic principle of the constant DC capacitor voltage control based strategy for the ALB is discussed in detail and then confirmed by both digital computer simulations using PSIM software and prototype experimental model. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy for the ALB can balance the source currents with a unity power factor in the three-phase four-wire distribution systems. -
In this paper, a new design method of vibration suppression controller for multi-inertia (especially, 3-ineritia) resonance systems is proposed. The controller consists of a digital fuzzy controller for speed loop and a digital PI controller for current minor loop. The three scaling factor of the fuzzy controller and two PI controller gains are determined by Differential Evolution (DE). The DE is one of optimization techniques and a kind of evolutionary computation technique. In this paper, we have applied the DE/rand/1/bin strategy to design the optimal controller parameters. Comparing with the conventional design algorithm, the proposed method is able to shorten the time of the controller design to a large extent and to obtain accurate results. Finally, we confirmed the effectiveness of the proposal method by the computer simulations.

In the last years, fault problem in power electronics has been more and more investigated both from theoretical and practical point of view. The fault problem can cause equipment failure, data and economical losses. And the analyze system require to ensure fault problem and also rectify failures. The current errors on these faults are applied for identified type of faults. This paper presents technique to detection and identification faults in three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) by using time-frequency distribution (TFD). TFD capable represent time frequency representation (TFR) in temporal and spectral information. Based on TFR, signal parameters are calculated such as instantaneous average current, instantaneous root mean square current, instantaneous fundamental root mean square current and, instantaneous total current waveform distortion. From on results, the detection of VSI faults could be determined based on characteristic of parameter estimation. And also concluded that the fault detection is capable of identifying the type of inverter fault and can reduce cost maintenance.

This paper describes magnetically levitated vehicle with hybrid magnets, which have been studied by the authors in place of streetcars or conveyance system. An experimental vehicle of 20kg was magnetically levitated by using a small number of dry-cell batteries, which consisted of 10 Ni-MH cells of 1900mAh in series. The magnets were activated sequentially, because the internal resistance of the batteries suppressed the maximum current. The vehicle was kept levitating for about 2 hours and was stable against disturbance due to instantaneous external force. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of the magnetically levitated vehicle using a small number of dry cell batteries are presented. -

If two or more Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) can be controlled by one inverter, a train can be driven by less energy than the present Induction Motor (IM) drive system. First, this paper proposes a method for simulating the movement of wheels and a vehicle to develop a control method. Next, a method is presented for controlling two or more PMSMs by one inverter. -
To satisfy the high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connection demand for wind power generation system, a novel topology and control strategy of HVDC grid connection for open-winding permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind power generation system is proposed, in which two generator-side converter and two isolated DC/DC converters are used to transmit the wind energy captured by open winding PMSG to HVDC grid. By deducing the mathematic model of open winding PMSG, the vector control technique, position sensorless operation, and space vector modulation strategy is applied to implement the stable generation operation of PMSG. Finally, the simulation model based on MATLAB is built to validate the availability of the proposed control strategy.

In this paper, a design problem of the flywheel energy storage system controller using genetic algorithm (GA) is investigated for a frequency control of the wind diesel hybrid power generation system in an isolated power system. In order to select parameters of the FESS controller, two performance indexes are used. We evaluated a frequency control effect for the wind diesel hybrid power system according to change of the weighted values of a performance index. To verify performance of the FESS controller according to the weighted value of the performance index, the frequency domain analysis using a singular value bode diagram and the dynamic simulations for various weighted values of performance index were performed. To verify control performance of the designed FESS controller, the eigenvalue analysis and the dynamic simulations were performed. The control characteristics with the two designed FESS controller were compared with that of the conventional pitch controller. The simulation results showed that the FESS controller provided better dynamic responses in comparison with the conventional controller.
