Cognition and Needs on the Patients for the Activation of Oral Health Education Using Smart Phone Applications

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental patients on oral health education by smartphone applications and their needs for that in an effort to provide some information on how to provide oral health education by making effective use of smartphone applications. Method: A survey was conducted on the smartphone users who were in their 10s through 40s. They were selected by random sampling from the smartphone users who visited dental hospitals and clinics in Gyeoggi Province and Incheon. The answer sheets from 268 respondents were analyzed, and a statistical package SPSS 19.0 was utilized to make a statistical analysis. Results : 1. As for oral health education experience by age, the respondents who were in their 20s had the most experience of receiving that education (45.3%). By gender, the women(47.0%) received more oral health education than the men. 2. The oral health education that they received the most was about toothbrushing(31.0%), and the most commonly used teaching medium was a teeth model(26.1%). 3. Concerning awareness of the necessity of oral health education, they gave a mean of 2.68 out of three. The respondents who received more oral health education considered that to be more necessary. 4. The major factors that made them feel interest when they used smartphone applications were content(52.2%) and fun(47.8%). 5. Regarding intention of using applications for oral health education, they gave a mean of 2.53 out of three. The respondents who received more oral health education replied they had a more intention to use these applications. 6. The education that they wanted to receive the most by using applications for oral health education was how to prevent dental caries(53.4%), followed by toothbrushing method(40.3%) and how to prevent gingival diseases(39.6%). Their favorite means of learning were a combination of writing and pictures(39.2%) and games(33.2%). 7. As to the advantage of oral health education by smartphone, the largest group(48.5%) replied it would help them to keep their teeth clean. Conclusion: Oral health education by smartphone applications is expected to be effective enough to stimulate learners to take good care of their teeth, and smartphone applications seem to be utilized as one of primary teaching media for oral health education.

연구목적 : 본 연구는 보다 체계적이고 효과적으로 스마트폰 어플리케이션을 활용하여 구강보건교육을 하기 위해 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 치과에 내원하는 환자들을 대상으로 스마트폰 어플리케이션의 구강보건교육 인식 및 요구도를 조사하였다. 연구방법 : 경기·인천지역 치과 병·의원에 내원하는 10~40대 스마트폰 사용자를 대상으로 무작위 표본추출법으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며 총 268부가 최종 분석 자료로 활용되었다. 통계분석은 SPSS Statistics version 19.0을 이용하였다. 연구결과 : 1. 구강보건교육을 받아본 경험은 연령에 있어 20대가 45.3%로 가장 높았고, 성별로는 여자가 47.0%로 남자보다 더 높았다. 2. 가장 많이 받은 구강보건교육은 '칫솔질 교육(31.0%)'이었고, 구강보건교육 시 사용한 구강보건교육매체로는 '치아모형(26.1%)'으로 나타났다. 3. '구강보건교육의 필요성'의 인식은 2.68점(3점 기준)으로 구강보건교육경험이 있는 연구대상자일수록 구강보건교육이 필요하다고 평가하였다. 4. 스마트폰 어플리케이션 사용 시 흥미를 느끼게 하는 요인은 '내용(52.2%)'과 '재미(47.8%)'가 주된 요인으로 나타났다. 5. 구강보건교육 어플리케이션 사용의향은 2.35점(3점 기준)으로 구강보건교육경험이 있는 연구대상자일수록 구강보건교육 어플리케이션을 사용할 의향이 있다고 응답하였다. 6. 구강보건교육 어플리케이션을 통해 받고 싶은 교육은 충치예방법(53.4%), 칫솔질 방법(40.3%), 잇몸질환 예방법(39.6%)순으로 나타났고, 연구대상자들이 선호하는 학습형태는 글&그림형(39.2%), 게임형(33.2%)을 주로 선호 하는 것으로 나타났다. 7. 스마트폰을 이용한 구강보건교육의 장점으로 '치아를 청결히 관리 할 수 있을 것 같다'(48.5%)라는 의견이 가장 높게 나타났다. 결 론 : 스마트폰 어플리케이션을 통한 구강보건교육의 효과가 구강보건행동으로 이어질 것으로 기대되며, 스마트폰 어플리케이션은 구강보건교육의 중요한 매체로 활용될 것으로 사료된다.
