역사드라마의 ‘징후적 독해’ : 거대담론과 작은 이야기의 공존 가능성으로서의 역사 드라마

A signal reading of Historical Drama : A study of the potential capacity to coexist in the mainstream(meta-narratives) and small stories in history in Historical Drama

본 논문은 오늘날 대중들에게 커다란 호응을 얻으며 활발하게 전개되고 있는 일명 ‘퓨전사극’이라는 TV 역사드라마에 대한 연구이다. 오늘날 방영되고 있는 일련의 TV 역사드라마는 기존의 TV 사극인 ‘정통사극’의 형태와는 여러 면에서 다른 새로운 형식적 시도가 보이는 역사드라마라는 점에서 ‘퓨전사극’이라고 명명할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 ‘퓨전사극’의 출현은 높은 시청률 확보라는 안전장치를 통해 장기간 반복 재생산되며 제2의 역사드라마 전성시대를 구가하고 있다. 이와 같은 사회․문화적 현상을 우리는 어떻게 설명해 낼 수 있을 것인가? 본고는 ‘퓨전사극’의 열풍이라는 사회·문화적 현상을 분석하고 필자 나름대로의 원인을 규명해 보기 위해 ‘징후적 독해’의 해석 방법을 시도한다. 왜냐하면 오랫동안 지속되어온 대중들의 사극에의 경도현상을 해독해내기 위해서는 표면적으로 드러난 양상뿐 아니라 그것이 드러냄으로써 숨기고 있는, 또 숨겨져 있는 즉, 은폐하고자 하기에 침묵으로만 존재하는 내재적인 모습을 파악해야 하기 때문이다. 이러한 의도 아래 ‘퓨전사극’의 출현에 대해 해석해 보고 결론에 도달한 궤적을 정리해 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과거 ‘정통사극’ 형식의 역사드라마에서 오늘날의 ‘퓨전사극’ 형식의 역사드라마로의 진화과정 및 위치를 TV 드라마의 장르사적 변화에서 파악해본다. 둘째, ‘퓨전사극’의 등장 및 형성요인을 장르의 혼종화 현상, 매체의 변화, 포스트모더니즘 역사학의 부흥이라는 관점에서 진단해 본다. 셋째, 이러한 요인에 힘입어 제작되어진 ‘퓨전사극’이 외적으로는 ‘정통사극’이 지향했던 역사의 권위적이고 거대담론적 시각을 해체하고 미시사적 접근을 함으로써 새로운 민중적 역사해석을 시도하고 있는 듯이 보이나, 내적으로는 여전히 거대담론이 담보되어 있는, 따라서 그 바탕과 기초 위에 작은이야기(미시사)가 공존하는 구조를 지니고 있다는 가설을 시도해 본다. 즉, ‘퓨전사극’이 거대담론과 작은이야기가 공존함으로써 새로운 영웅인 민중적 영웅 만들기와 같은 대중들의 욕망에 부합하는 측면을 강하게 지니고 있다는 것을 밝혀 보려 한다. 나아가 ‘퓨전사극’ 장르는 이와 같이 거대담론과 작은이야기가 공존할 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있는 장르라는 점에서 대중들에게 어필하며 반복 재생산되고 앞으로도 그럴 가능성을 내포하고 있음을 지적하고자 한다.

The purpose of this dissertation is to find out the factors whichcontribute to ‘Fusion historical drama’ being popularized among thepeople, used as ‘a signal reading’.To analyze this social phenomenon, which is known as ‘The goldenage of historical drama’ on TV, we need to look inside for certaininfluential factors.The characteristic part of this phenomenon is transferring from the‘Traditional historical drama’ to ‘Fusion historical drama’ during the 21stcentury. Reasons for this change are as follows:First is due simply to the natural changes in time.Secondly, changes in the media over time has brought about thephenomenon of ‘mixing genres’. This phenomenon is due to thecombination of the media, genre and culture. These changes alsobrought about the change of fictional creation which became known asthe ‘Age of Simulacra’. The Simulacra perceives that the boundariesbetween facts of traditional history and fictional history are breaking up.Thirdly, the revival of ‘Post Modernism in Historical Science’ changes the way of approach on a view from macro-analysis to microscopicanalysis.Although ‘Fusion historical drama’ contains small stories asmicroscopic analysis, it still has an historic view of macro-analysis.‘Fusion historical drama’ has potential capacity to coexist in themainstream and small stories in history. And it looks set to stay in thepublic.
