  • The effects of chloroform extract from Riccardia marginata on antifungal activity were investigated. The crude chloroform extract of R. marginata inhibited the growth of the Gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19659, (4 mm inhibition zone at $150\;{\mu}g/disc$) and the dermatophytic fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 28185, (6 mm inhibition zone at $150\;{\mu}g/disc$), and inactive to P388 murine leukaemia cells ATCC CCL 46 P388D1, ($IC_{50}\;>25,000\;{\mu}g/mL$ at $150\;{\mu}g/disc$). This crude chloroform extract of R. marginata showed strong antifungal activity against the dermatophytic fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

  • The effects of ethanol extract from Lepidolaena clavigera (L. clavigera) on antifungal activity were investigated. The crude ethanol extract of L. clavigera inhibited the growth of the Gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19659, (1 mm inhibition zone at 150 ${\mu}g/disc$) and the dermatophytic fungus Trichophyon mentagrophyes ATCC 28185, (2 mm inhibition zone at 150 ${\mu}g/disc$), and cytotoxic to P388 murine leukaemia cells ATCC CCL 46 P388D1, (IC50 >12,500 ${\mu}g/mL\;at\;150\;{\mu}g/disc$) and cytotoxic to BSC monkey kidney cells (@ 5 mg/mL, 150 ${\mu}g/disc$; ++: 50% activity). We suppose that this crude ethanol extract of L. clavigera is the antifungal activity.

  • Two antibiotics, doxycycline (doxy) and ciprofloxacin (cipro) were applied under a variety of conditions to silk, and to silk that had previously been hydrolyzed. FTIR-ATR analyses indicated that the drastic increase in sorption of antibiotics by hydrolyzed silk was attributable to both chemical and conformational changes that occurred on hydrolysis. A high sorption of doxy by hydrolyzed silk did not necessarily give a more infection-resistant material as determined by a zone of inhibition test. Conversely, the same hydrolysis considerably increased both sorption of cipro and zone of inhibition of cipro-treated silk dyed at 65$^{\circ}C$ and 85$^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of crude extracts from medicinal plants on biological activity were investigated. The crude ethanol extract of H. paucistipula inhibited the growth of the Gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19659, (2 mm inhibition zone at 150 ${\mu}g$/disc) and the dermatophyte Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 28185, (7 mm inhibition zone at 150 ${\mu}g$/disc), and toxic to P388 murine leukaemia cells ($IC_{50}\;2.48\;{\mu}g/ml$ at 75 ${\mu}g$/disk). This crude ethanol extract of H. paucistipula is the strongest antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities against P388 murine leukaemia cells (ATCC CCL 46 P388D1).

  • Purpose: To evaluate the antimicrobial persistence of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and silver fluoride (AgF) on Streptococcus mutans. Materials and Methods: An in vitro experiment was conducted to observe changes in the diameter of the inhibition zone of various materials, including AgF (Riva Star AquaTM step 1; SDI), potassium iodine (Riva star aquaTM step 2; SDI), Fluor protector® (FP, Ivoclar Vivadent), SDF (Riva starTM step 1; SDI), Ampicillin (Sigma-Aldrich), Amphotericin B (Nexstar) and negative control on S. mutans. Result: SDF, AgF and FP exhibited significant antimicrobial persistence over the 4 weeks period (P<0.05). At day 28, the diameter of inhibition zone was larger in SDF than in AgF. Conclusion: SDF and AgF have significant antibacterial durability against bacteria commonly associated with dental caries, with the antimicrobial effect lasting for at least 4 weeks. Further clinical studies are needed to validate these findings in vivo.

  • 1. The purpose of this study is to determine the antibacterial effect of the remedies commonly used in operative dentistry. 2. Experiment were performed against staphylococcus albus which were isolated from different root canals. 3. Isolated bacteria were inoculated on nutrient agar and disk which has been saturated antiseptics were placed on it, then this plate was incubated for 48 hours at 37℃. 4. Inhibition zone were measured around antiseptic disks. 5. The results of 45 cases of experiments showed as follows. Average diameter of inhibition zone around phenol disk was 2.99 mm, camphorated phenol, 0.74 mm, formocresol, 13.46mm, formocresol (Korea), 12.7 mm, eugenol, 4.74mm, thymol, 16.46 mm.

  • Objective : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of Coptidis rhizoma extract compared with quantity on Pseudomonas aeruginosa that induce keratitis. Methods : MIC was measured by dropping to 50 ${\mu}l$ according to density Coptidis rhizoma extract(100%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%) compared with quantity(40g, 80g, 120g, 160g). Anti-bacterial potency was measured by the size of inhibition zone with change of volume. Results : MIC on Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Coptidis rhizoma extract compared with quantity(40g, 80g, 120g, 160g) was not showed all samples(100%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%). Conclusions : Coptidis rhizoma extract compared with quantity was not showed anti-bacterial potency on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results differ that Coptidis rhizoma extract was showed anti-bacterial potency in 1999 year. Anti-bacterial Potency of Coptidis rhizoma extract compared with quantity on Pseudomonas aeruginosa must be studied.

  • Objective : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of Jinpi-san on Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) and Staphylococcus epidermidis(S. epidermidis) that induce keratitis. Methods : Minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) was measured by dropping to $50{\mu}l$ according to density Jinpi-san(100%, 10%, 1%, 0.1 %). Anti-bacterial potency was measured by the size of inhibition zone with change of volume. Results : 1. MIC on S. aureus in Jinpi-san was $40{\mu}l$ undiluted solution. 2. MIC on S. epidermidis in Jinpi-san was $20{\mu}l$ undiluted solution. Conclusions : These results indicate that Jinpi-san can be used to cure S. aureus, S. epidermidis that induce eye disease(keratitis). If further study is performed, the use of eye drops will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.
