  • Techniques such as dissolved air flotation and electroflotation, which utilize micro bubbles, are increasingly used for water and wastewater treatment. Most studies have concentrated on particle characteristics. Pretreatments that manipulate particle size and zeta potential were considered important. A recent study, which modeled the collision mechanism between micro bubbles and particles in dissolved air flotation, suggested bubble characteristics should also be important. Hydrogen micro bubbles were generated electrolytically and their zeta potentials measured under various conditions using a novel electrophoresis method. Effects of several parameters were investigated. Bubble zeta potentials were found to be pH dependent, and to have a negative value around neutral pH, becoming zero or positive at lower pH. The pH at zero zeta potential was 5.0 under study conditions. Using artificial solution and tap water, at fixed pH, bubble zeta potentials varied with solution composition. Zeta potentia]s of bubbles were affected by the types of cations and anions in solution but not by the voltage applied. These findings will help improve efficiencies of particle removal processes that utilize micro bubbles. As bubble zeta potential varies with solution composition, it needs to be measured for each composition to understand those effects, which increase removal efficiency.

  • In this study, the anionic emulsified asphalt was prepared by dispersing asphalt particles evenly into water with combination of anionic and nonionic surfactants. Effects of NaOH and $CaCl_2$ on the phase stability of the emulsified asphalt were also investigated through zeta potential value and rheology behavior; the emulsified asphalt added with NaOH and $CaCl_2$ showed higher zeta potential value than that the asphalt with addition of only anionic and nonionic surfactants. In addition, with regard to shear thinning behaviors, it was found that pH of the emulsified anionic asphalt and $Ca^{2+}$, counter ion, affected the phase stability. SBR (styrene-butadiene-rubber) latex, EPD (water dispersed Epoxy), PU (polyurethane) and RI-10S, SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene)-based property improvement additive, were used and studied to enhance the adhesion properties with the aggregates. RI-10S, however, was found to be only compatible with the anionic emulsified asphalt; the coating rate, adhesion and compression strength were increased with the RI-10S content.

  • Poly-methylmetacrylate (PMMA) is mainly applied in the plastic manufacturing industry, but PMMA is weak and gradually got discolor. The strength of PMMA can be improved through organic-inorganic hybrid nano composites with inorganic nano particles such as, $SiO_2$ or ZrO. However, inorganic nano particles are mostly agglomerated spontaneously. In this study, the zeta potential is controlled using different types of organic solvent with different concentrations, dispersibillity of $SiO_2$ nano particles on the PMMA particle are analyzed. When 3 M acetic acid is used, absolute value of the zeta potential is higher, $SiO_2$ nano particle is well attached, and dispersed on the PMMA particle surface. Results indicate that the absolute value of the zeta potential affects the stability of $SiO_2$ dispersion.

  • Effects of the dosage change, from 0 to 2.0 wt% based on cement weight, of naphthalenic (NSF) and polycarboxylic(NT-2) superplasticizers, on the fluidity of cement paste substituted by 10 wt% II-anhydrite and fly ash respectively as well as II-anhydrite and fly ash itself were investigated. Dispersion properties between particles in suspension were investigated by zeta potential test. Initial fluidity and slump loss in the paste system were observed through mini-slump and apparent viscosity changes with elapsed time. Zeta potential on the particle surface was a tendency to increase according to increasing of NSF dosage. Especially, zeta potential of fly ash has the highest value among all particles equivalent to NSF dosage. In the fluidity of cement paste substituted by inorganic particles, the specimen with substitution of 10 wt% II-anhydrite and fly ash for cement was more effective than cement itself to improve initial fluidity and retain stable fluidity of cement paste. In addition, effect of NT-2 and NSF to improve the fluidity of cement paste, addition of 1.0 wt% NT-2 was more effective than 1.5wt% NSF.

  • Using a simple continuous optical technique, coupled with measurements of zeta potential, the effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, kaoline particles and pH on flocculation of humic acid by several cationic polyelectrolytes, have been examined. The charge density of a polyelectolyte is important in determining the optimum dosage and in the removal of humic acid. The optimum dosage is less for the polyelectrolytes of higher charge density and is the same regardless of the presence of kaoline particles of different turbidity. At the dosage, the removal of humic acid is higher for the polyelectrolytes of higher charge density and the zeta potential of humic acid approaches to near zero, With increasing pH of humic acid, the optimum dosage increases and the flocculation index value obtained at the dosage decreases in the following pH 7 > pH 5 > pH 9, regardless of polyelectrolytes.

  • The specific ion effects are observed in the alumina-metal EDTA(Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid) system. These effects seem to be associated with the fluidity of the metal ion in the complex. A consideration of the order of adsorption of the complexes on alumina indicates that a specific ion effect also affects the stability of the system. It is clear that EDTA and its heavy metal complexes have a significant effect on the dewaterability of alumina. These effects are not well represented by zeta potential measurements, especially for EDTA alone. With the nonspeciating complexes, though, the maximum permeability is predicted by the pH$\_$zpc/ from zeta potential measurements. At other pH value, the refiltration rate is better predicted by the state of coagulation as measured by log W.

  • In this study, a hydrogenated lecithin-containing nanoemulsion was prepared from hydrogenated lecithin and silicone oil. Tween-60 and liquid paraffin, widely known emulsifiers, were used as standard substances, and high shear was produced by utilizing a high shear homogenizer and microfluidizer. The properties of the nanoemulsion prepared with hydrogenated lecithin were evaluated by measuring interfacial tension, dynamic interfacial tension, droplet size, zeta-potential, friction force, skin surface hygrometery, and dermal safety. The interfacial tension of lecinol S10/silicone oil was lower than that of lecinol S10/liquid paraffin. The nanoemulsion prepared from hydrogenated lecithin shows lower zeta-potential, skin surface hygrometery, and friction force compared with a general emulsion. The silicone nanoemulsion prepared from hydrogenated lecithin showed a zero value in the patch test and thus exhibits high dermal safety.
