  • One of the big obstacles to cultivate asparagus was long days taking before first harvesting. This study was carried out to hasten the first harvesting of summer planted asparagus in Jeju. Seedlings were raised for three months and planted June 20th in green house. Harvesting of Spring were separated into non-harvested (control) and harvested (partly-harvesting, completely-harvesting). The first year we could harvest $399kg{\sim}400kg/10a$ in harvesting treatment. Second year's yield was 834kg/10a in partly-harvesting, 825kg/10a in completely-harvesting treatment and 908kg/10a in control. There is no significant difference in second years yield regardless of first year's harvesting methods. The accumulated total yield was increased by 35% (l,229kg/10a) in harvesting treatment from the first spring compared with the control. Marketable yield was increased by 33% (1,116kg/10a) compared with non harvesting in first year (839kg/10a). The result of this study shows that doing harvest of the first year's spring in summer planting asparagus would be desirable for yield and possible to harvest after 8 months planting.

  • In late June 2016, stalk rot symptoms were observed on five vatieties of sorghum (Sorghum bicolar) at organic paddy-upland rotation system in Anseong city, Korea. The initial symptom on stalk surfaces was red color with a dark red spot lesion. A fungus was isolated from the initial lesion, and cultured on potato dextrose agar. Size of microconidia mostly extend to $5-19{\times}2-{\mu}m$ in culture, with 0-1 septa and macroconidia extend to $29-52{\times}3-4{\mu}m$ with 4-6 septa. Pathogenicity was investigated using conidial suspension spray to seedling of sorghum. After 3 days of inoculation, the dark red lesion was produced on stalks. On the basis of mycological characteristics, pathogenicity, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA sequence analysis, this fungus was identified as Fusarium thapsinum. This is the first report of stalk rot on sorghum caused by F. thapsinum in Korea.

  • Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is a viral disease causing severe economic losses on tomato. Practical prevention of the TYLCV disease is to control tabacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) or to cultivate TYLCV-resistant tomato cultivars, because no agrochemical products are available to control TYLCV. In this study, TYLCV resistance of the commercial tomato cultivars were evaluated using the DNA markers tightly linked to TYLCV resistance genes Ty-1 and Ty-3 and infection with the TYLCV clones mediated by Agrobacterium. In marker genotyping, resistance alleles were detected from 4 oval type tomato cultivars (Titichal, TY tinny, TY saengsaeng II, TY sense Q). Four cheery type cultiavrs (TY endorphin, TY smartsama, Tiara TY, Olleh TY) and 6 round type cultivars (TY kingdom, TY ace, TY homerun, TY altorang, Dotaerang TY winner, Styx TY). The seedling bioassay indicated that tomato cultivars of the oval type and cherry type showed consistancy in marker genotype and phenotype while slight disease symptom was observed from some round type cultivras (TY ace, TY homerun, Styx TY) with resistance marker genotype. For fruit yields, TY tinny was greater than its control cultivar Titichal in oval types, TY smartsama was greater than its control Smile in cherry type, and TY ace and TY kingdom were greater than their control Dabok. These cutliavrs can be a good choice for high-yielding TYLCV-resistant tomato cultivars.

  • The researchers studied the composition of latent buds by surveying the embryo of harvested seed, and the developmental pathway of latent buds by analyzing the characteristics of local ginseng. One-year-old ginseng seedlings were transplanted into the field and harvested two years later. The developmental pathway of the main bud, which would be the shoot of ginseng in the fourth year, was also investigated. The main bud of the seedling was formed from the region between root and shoot of the germinating seed. Primary and axillary latent buds protruded in a dome-shape from the cortex and separated from the main bud. Ninety percent of the single main bud was derived from the primary latent bud. Twin main buds were derived from a primary latent bud and one axillary bud, and triple main buds were derived from primary latent bud and two axillary latent buds. In the field, the researchers could not find 2-stem plants in 2-3 years old plants. However, the researchers found a 2-stem plant in a 4-year-old plant because its two main buds developed from a 3-year-old plant. We can conclude that a 2-stem plant was observed in the plant that was at least 4 years old. The main buds of the 4-year-old plant were formed at the primary and axillary latent bud of seed and cortex, the latent bud of rhizome in a 2-3 year old plant. In older plants, twin and triple main buds were derived mostly from the cortex latent bud than the primary latent bud.

  • Primed seeds germinate faster and uniformly, since these have already started imbibition and metabolism requiring to complete germination. Several factors such as solution composition, osmotic potential, and treatment duration affect seed priming response. Water potentials of priming solution and germination response of primed seed were investigated to clarify the effects different inorganic salt types and the duration. Pepper seeds were primed in osmotic solutions that were osmotic potential ranged -1.54 to -0.45 MPa in an aerated solution of polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG; 17%, 22%, 27%), and inorganic salt solution of $KNO_3$, $K_2SO_4$, and $Na_2SO_4$ (100, 200, 300mM) in aerated condition. The seeds were treated at $20^{\circ}C$ for 4, 6 day (D) and stepwise duration combined concentration of 100mM (2 or 4 days) and 300mM(2 or 4days). After soaking treatment, seeds were washed with distilled water and then were dried to approximately 6% moisture content in dry chamber at $25^{\circ}C$. The germination of seed was characterized by ISAT rules at $20^{\circ}C/30^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$. Total germination percentage (GP), mean germination time (MGT), germination uniformity (GU), germination rate (GR), and health seedling percent (HS) were calculated on the germinated seed in a 14-day period. Seed water potential (${\psi}$) was correlated with water potential of priming solution ($r^2=0.84$). The effect of seed priming on germination varies with inorganic salt and organic agents (PEG). Germination percentage (GP, 77 and 73%), GR (21.3 and $19.4 %{\cdot}day^{-1}$), and HS (58 and 52 %) was greatest and lowest MGT (4.2 and 4.8 day) when they were primed in 100mM $K_2SO_4$ (${\psi}=-0.45MPa$), and 100mM $KNO_3$ (${\psi}=-0.52MPa$) for 6 days compared to untreated control (67% GP, $19.7%{\cdot}day^{-1}\;GR$, 18% HS, and 10.8 day MGT) in $15^{\circ}C$ chamber. Water potential less then -1.2MPa of osmotic solution resulted lower GP, GR and HS and in $K_2SO_4$ and $KNO_3$. However, stepwise treatment of water potential that changed solution as 100mM for 4 D + 300mM for 2 D or 300mM for 4 D + 100mM for 2 D) were not better than single concentration alone in germination characteristics.

  • A new promising kiwifruit, 'Halla Gold' variety with yellow flesh and being harvested in October, was developed at the Agricultural Research Center for Climate Change, National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, Korea in 2007. This variety was derived from the seedling population crossed between Actinidia chinensis cv. Golden Yellow and A. chinensis cv. Songongu in 1997. It was selected out of 2,971 seedlings. Characteristic trials were carried out from 2001 to 2003. After the selection, adaptability test was also conducted at kiwifruit orchards in Jeju Island from 2003 to 2007. Shoots of 'Halla Gold' sprout slightly stronger than those of 'Jecy Gold' but weaker than 'Hort16A' and the color of leaf is green. Fruit shape is oblong and fruit skin color is yellowish-dark green without hair. The average weight of fruit is 106.3 g. Fruit has a moderate size soft core, yellow pericarp, and fragile and juicy flesh. Soluble solids content is $14.7^{\circ}$ Brix and acidity is 1.4%. The harvesting time is about 10 days earlier than 'Jecy Gold' and about 20 days ahead of 'Hort16A'. The storage life is about 90 days at $2^{\circ}C$. This variety can be recommended for cultivating at low land area bellow 100 m sea level in Jeju Island or under shelter to prevent disease and cold injury.

  • 'Dream Song' is a cultivar of Gypsophila paniculata developed by the Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2010 for cut-flower production. This hybrid was bred from 121 seedlings collected from an open-pollinated population of 'Gyp06-11'. It has novel morphological characteristics of upright plant type, lanceolate leaves, double florets with a few bright white-colored petals of obovate shape, truncate petal tips, and cup-shaped calyces. Furthermore 'Dream Song' has desirable cultivation characteristics including narrow branching angle, and moderate resistance to powdery mildew, thrips and leaf miners. Moreover it produces more primary branches, and longer internodes and flower stalks than reference cultivar 'Bristol Fairy' during summer cultivation in a subalpine area (500 m over the sea level). Flowering in 'Dream Song' is delayed by about 17 days as compared to 'Bristol Fairy'. 'Dream Song' produces normal flowers with 2 pistils and an average of 10.4 stamens, with fewer malformed flowers than 'Bristol Fairy'.

  • As stand-missing rate (SMR) of ginseng plants in fields are directly related to the ginseng root rot, the forecasting model for the root rot progress in ginseng fields was developed, using the estimated SMRs by disease incidence (DI) of ginseng seedling in the soil-indexing bioassay and the estimate of DI derived from soil environmental factors or rhizoplane microflora. For fitness analysis of the forecasting model, simple correlation and linear regression between SMRs at different planting ages in fields and their estimates by 3 factors of the model were evaluated. The SMR estimated from the factor of DI in the bioassay had much higher fitness to the SMR observed in fields than that from the factors of soil environments and rhizoplane microflora. The estimated SMRs in young and aged ginseng fields by DI in the bioassay were significantly correlated with the observed SMRs in 3- and 5-year-old ginseng fields, respectively (p=0.01). this implicates that indexing preplanting field soils with the forecasting model using DI in the bioassay can provide an information to determine the suitability of the fields for ginseng cultivation, and that indexing cultivating field soils can be helpful to determine the time of harvesting to reduce further yield loss by root rot in continuous cultivation in the next year.

  • Stem blight symptom of soybean was severely developed in 2016 in Hwaseong and Yeoncheon. During the seedling period, the damping-off of seedlings and the brown or black spots of cotyledons were observed. After August, the leaves began to be yellowed, and partially browned areas on leaves began to develop. After September, microsclerotia began to form even on the surface of the stems that had exhibited water-soaking symptom. After mid-October of the harvest season, the epidermis of the stem was peeled off, resulting in the formation of a large number of microsclerotia in the cortex. The pathogens isolated from these symptoms were the best in mycelial growth at 32-35℃, and the formation of microsclerotia was the most at 20-28℃. The pathogen was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina through the morphological characteristics of the pathogen and the sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region gene. In addition, when inoculated with a soybean stem using toothpicks cultured with the pathogen, the same symptoms as seen on the soybean field occurred. When the pathogen was re-isolated at the lesion site, the same pathogen was isolated and identified as Macrophomina phaseolina. Based on the results, the disease is reported as soybean charcoal rot.
