  • Recently, the high-strength concrete is increasingly used in the construction of reinforced concrete structures due to its benefits, but this use is influenced negatively on the local ductility of structural elements. The objective of this study is the prediction of a new approach to evaluate the curvature ductility factor of high strength concrete beams according to Eurocode 2. After the presentation of the Constitutive laws of materials and the evaluation method of curvature ductility according to the Eurocode 2, we conduct a parametric study on the factors influencing the curvature ductility of inflected sections. The calibrating of the obtained results allows predicting a very simple approach for estimating the curvature ductility factor. The proposed formula allows to calculate the curvature ductility factor of high strength concrete beams directly according to the concrete strength $f_{ck}$, the yield strength of steel $f_{yk}$ and the ratio of tension and compression reinforcements ${\rho}$ and ${\rho}^{\prime}$ respectively, this proposed formula is validated by theoretical and experimental results of different researchers.

  • The mechanical properties of REBCO coated conductor (CC) wires under uniaxial tension are largely determined by the thick component layers in the architecture, namely, the substrate and the stabilizer or even the reinforcement layer. Depending on device applications of the CC tapes, it is necessary to reinforce thin metallic foils externally to one-side or both sides of the CC tapes. Due to the external reinforcement of brass foils, it was found that this could increase the reversible strain limit from the Cu-stabilized CC tapes. In this study, the effects of differently hardened brass foil laminate on the electromechanical property of CC tapes were investigated under uniaxial tension loading. The tensile strain dependence of the critical current ($I_c$) was measured at 77 K and self-field. Depending on whether the $I_c$ of CC tapes were measured during loading or after unloading, a reversible strain (or stress) limit could be determined, respectively. The both-sides of the Cu-stabilized CC tapes were laminated with brass foils with different hardness, namely 1/4H, 1H and EH. From the obtained results, it showed that the yield strength of the brass laminated CC tapes with EH brass foil laminate was comparable to the one of the Cu-stabilized CC tape due to its large yield strength even though its large volume fraction. It was found that the brass foil with different hardness was mainly sensitive on the stress dependence of $I_c$, but not on the strain sensitivity due to the residual strain induced in the laminated CC tapes during unloading.

  • This study analyzed stresses in concrete and its reinforcement, computing the additional loading transferred by concrete creep. The loading varied from zero, structure exclusively under its self-weight, up to the critical buckling load. The studied structure was a real, tapered, reinforced concrete pole. As concrete is a composite material, homogenizing techniques were used in the calculations. Due to the static indetermination for determining the normal forces acting on concrete and reinforcement, equations that considered the balance of forces and compatibility of displacement on cross-sections were employed. In the mathematical solution used to define the critical buckling load, all the elements of the structural dynamics present in the system were considered, including the column self-weight. The structural imperfections were linearized using the geometric stiffness, the proprieties of the concrete were considered according to the guidelines of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 209R), and the ground was modeled as a set of distributed springs along the foundation length. Critical buckling loads were computed at different time intervals after the structure was loaded. Finite element method results were also obtained for comparison. For an interval of 5000 days, the modulus of elasticity and critical buckling load reduced by 36% and 27%, respectively, compared to an interval of zero days. During this time interval, stress on the reinforcement steel reached within 5% of the steel yield strength. The computed strains in that interval stayed below the normative limit.

  • The effect of manufacturing variables, such as reactant powder$(TiB_2, B_4C)$, sintering temperature, and sintering time has been investigated on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of in-situ processed Ti/TiB composites. The mechanical properties were evaluated by measuring the compressive yield strength. The compressive yield strength of the in-situ processed composites was higher than that of the Ti-6AI-4V. The compressive yield strength of the composite made with TiE, reactant powder was higher than that of $B_4C$, mixed at the same volume fraction of reinforcement. It is because bonding nature between the matrix and the $TiB_2$, reactant powder was more strong than that of the other materials. It was proven by the examining the crack propagation path.

  • Composite materials offer distinct and unique properties that are not naturally inherited in the individual materials that make them. One of the most attractive composites to manufacture is the aluminum alloy matrix composite, because it usually combines easiness of availability, light weight, strength, and other favorable properties. In the current work, Powder Metallurgy Method (PMM) is used to prepare Al2024 matrix composites reinforced with different mixing ratios of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) particles. The tests performed on the composites include physical, mechanical, and tribological, as well as microstructure analysis via optical microscope. The results show that the experimental density slightly decreases while the porosity increases when the reinforcement ratio increases within the selected range of 0 ~ 20 wt%. Besides this, the yield strength, tensile strength, and Vickers hardness increase up to a 10 wt% Y2O3 ratio, after which they decline. Moreover, the wear results show that the composite follows the same paradigm for strength and hardness. It is concluded that this composite is ideal for application when higher strength is required from aluminum composites, as well as lighter weight up to certain values of Y2O3 ratio.

  • Generally significant reinforcement is used for nuclear power plant structures and may cause potential problems when concrete is poured. In particular pouring concrete into structural member joint area is more difficult than other areas since the joint area is very congested due to hooked bars, embedded plates, and other reinforcements. The purpose of this study is to solve the problem by applying high-strength(ASTM A615 Gr. 75/80) bars. In addition large-sized(#14 & #18) headed deformed bar could be used as alternative of standard hooked bars to relieve the congestion to some extent. In order to apply headed deformed bars to nuclear power plant structures effectively, the large-sized diameter bars and the high-strength bars shall be used as thick as clear cover thickness 1". Therefore, test results were obtained by taking bar size, yield strength, and clear cover thickness as variables.

  • Design provisions for the development length of headed bars in ACI 318-08 include concrete compressive strength and yield strength of headed bars as design parameters but do not consider the effects of transvers reinforcement. In addition, they have very strict limitation for clear spacing and material strengths because these provisions were developed based on limited tests. In this study, splice tests using SD600 headed bars with $2d_b$ clear spacing and transverse reinforcement were conducted. Test results show that unconfined specimens failed due to prying action and bottom cover concrete prematurely spalled. The contribution of head bearing on the anchorage strength is only 15% on average implying that unconfined specimens failed before the head bearing was not sufficiently developed. Confined specimens with stirrups placed along whole splice length have enhanced strengths in bearing as well as bond because the stirrups prevented prying action and improved bond capacity. Bond failure occurred in locally confined specimens where stirrups were placed only at the ends of splice length. The stirrups at ends of splice lengths can prevent prying action but the bond capacity did not increase. From regression analysis of test results, an equation to predict anchorage strength of headed bars was developed. The proposed equation consists of bond and bearing contributions and includes transverse reinforcement index. The average ratio of tests to predictions is 1.0 with coefficient of variation of 6%.

  • This paper presents a parametric study of the plastic hinge length of circular reinforced concrete columns using a three-dimensional finite element analysis method, and using the Taguchi robust design method to reduce computational cost. Parameters examined include the longitudinal reinforcing ratio, the shear span-to-depth ratio, the axial force ratio and the concrete compressive strength. The study considers longitudinal reinforcement with yield strengths of 414 MPa and 685 MPa, and proposes simplified formulas for the plastic hinge length of circular reinforced concrete columns, showing that increases in plastic hinge length correlate to increases in the axial load, longitudinal reinforcing and shear span-to-depth ratios. As concrete strength increases, the plastic hinge length decreases for the 414 MPa case but increases for the 685 MPa case.

  • This paper propose a new seismic detail for ductility enhancement by interlocking spiral reinforcement in the potential yield regions of a wall. Through the theoretical consideration and experiment program, confinement with interlocking spirals lead the structural walls to ductile behavior. All specimens show stable hysteretic behavior and good energy dissipation capacity. Also the increase of shear strength mainly induces a flexural failure mode. As interlocking spiral are used in lapped splice region, they increase the bond strength and prevent a early tensile failure caused by the loss of bond stresses. Consequently, the confinement with interlocking spirals may result in a lower value of force reductions factor, newly proposed detail will be provide more economical design.

  • Performance evaluation exposing the performance of structure is affected by the material and structural characteristics. these should be necessary for the analysis about the effect of structure performance. Thus, to evaluate the structural performance affected the material properties and structural characteristics, firstly it is conducted the eigenvalues analysis and non-linear static analysis of the structure, secondly it is analyzed the performance influence factor of the structure. The performance influence factors affecting the performance of structure divided into five classes(strength of concrete, longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, aspect ratio, axial force). From the result of analysis about the change of performance influence factor, the more the strength of concrete is increasing, the more the maximum shear force is increasing and the yield displacement is not changed, the more longitudinal reinforce is increasing, the more yield displacement and the maximum basis shear force is increasing, the more the transverse reinforce is increasing, the change of maximum basis shear force is trivial. The yield displacement of structure is increasing and the maximum basis shear force is decreasing by increasing the aspect ratio, the more the axial force increases, the more yield displacement and maximum basis shear force decease.
