  • Effects of interspace mulching between polyethylene film house on growth and quality of oriental melon were followed. Soil moisture in control was 26.0%. Those of black nonwoven fabrics sheet and black film were less 1.2% and 2.9% than control, respectively. Soil temperature in control plot was $2.4^{\circ}$ Those of black nonwoven fabrics sheet and black film were higher $0.8^{\circ}$ and $1.8^{\circ}$ than control, respectively. Black film was better than control in stem length, leaf number and area, chlorophyll content, xylem exudate, first flowering and fruit riping periods. Black film was better in fruit weight and soluble solid, and lesser in fermented and malformed fruit ratios, and increased 28% in marketable fruit ratio to control, 1,864kg. This results were mainly from vinyl coverage between polyethylene film house to intercept rainfall and to increase soil temperature, which fasted growth of roots after transplanting in winter season.

  • rust fungus, Uromyces truncicola, infected stems, branches and leaves of Sophora japonica trees, and 78% of planted host depending on investigated sites. Teliospores of this fungus were reddish brown, global to oval and $29-37{\times}24-27\;{\mu}m$. The urediniospores were yellowish brown, elliptical to oval with spiny surface and $28-39{\times}19-22\;{\mu}m$. In the infected branches cork layers were thickened, ray parenchymatous cells were distorted, branched or combined and increased in numbers. While ray parenchymatous cells in healthy branches were one or two layers, the cells in the infected branches were three or more layers to shape fusiform. In the infected branches xylem tissues also distorted and yellowish pigments formed in the intercellular space. In the less infected trees the hairs on the branches were dense and long, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls were ca 23.3 ${\mu}m$, while in the highly infected trees the hairs were less dense and short, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls was ca 17.4 ${\mu}m$. We think individual host trees resistant to this fungus are present.

  • Anemone pendulisepala, recently described as a new species, is distributed in sympatry with A. reflexa, A. amurensis, and A. raddeana at Mt. taebeark and Mt. Baekdu. Anemone pendulisepala was previously proposed to be a hybrid species between A. reflexa and A. amurensis becaue it displavs overlapping features with them in involucre shape, petiole length, sepal apex and xylem shape, To verify the taxonomic status and to examine the hybridity of A. pendulisepala, sequences of ITS region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the psba-trnH, rps16 and trnLF region of cpDNA from 36 accessions of 5 taxa including outgroup were analyzed. In maximum parsimony tree based on ITS sequences, A. pendulisepala had the same sequences of A. reflexa and was clustered with monophyletic A. amurensis, and then A. raddeana. Anemone pendulisepala was distinguished from the other taxa by having four base insertion in rps16 region, two species-specific bases and insertion in trnLF region. In the phylogenetic trees of combined cpDNA, A. pendulisepala showed monophyly with the bootstrap 100%. Anemone pendulisepala exhibited no polymorphism and shared no sequences with putative parental or related taxa examined in this study. Molecular data suggest that A. pendulisepala should be a distinct species, and no evidence of the hybridization was detectcd.

  • For the comparison of feeding behavior of Nilaparvata lugens among different rice varieties, electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique was used. Ten rice varieties were selected from national-widely recommended rice varieties cultivating in Chungnam province. The correlation between feeding duration and honeydew amount excreted was investigated, and the types of EPG pattern were analyzed among rice varieties. The EPG patterns divided into 6 types according to electrical specific feature, respectively. Type 1 pattern was a searching feeding sites, resting or wandering on a rice plant. Type 2 pattern was appeared when the insect untaken from phloem sieve element. Type 3 pattern was observed when the insect piercing into the rice plant. Type 4 pattern was observed when the insect salivating in rice plant. Type 5 pattern was observed when the insect ingesting from the xylem. Type 6 pattern was observed when the stylet moving in cell. Feeding duration time on Gum-nam was significantly shorter than Dong-jin, Dae-ahn, Dong-ahn, Dae-san. Also, on Gun-nam, it was shown that the brown planthopper did not penetrate the cuticle for a long time. The total number of excreted honeydew droplets by the brown planthopper was the greatest in Dong-jin variety and the least in Gum-nam variety. In proportion to phloem feeding time, the number of honeydew droplets had been increased. According to the results of EPG patterns and honeydew droplets analysis, N. lugens seems to prefer Dong-jin, Dong-ahn, Dae-san, and Dae-ahn to Gum-nam, Da-san, and Nam-chun rice plant variety.

  • It was investigated that morphological characteristics of leaf and stomata, chlorophyll contents and wood anatomy characteristics in Schisandra chinensis, Schisandra nigra and Kadsura japonica. Leaf morphological characteristics were significant at 5% levels within the species and within the individuals as a male, a female and monoecious. K. japonica was the longest in the leaf length, followed by S. chinensis and S. nigra. For the leaf length among S. nigra individuals, the female was longer than male and monoecious. As for the Petiole length, S. nigra was twice longer than S. chinensis and K. japonica. Stomata length was ranged from $92.5\;{\mu}m$ to $105.9\;{\mu}m$ for S. nigra, $79.9\;{\mu}m$ for S. chinensis, $76.2\;{\mu}m$ for K. japonica. S. nigra was longer than the others in length and width, while its stomata density was lower than the others. The size of vessel elements and xylem fiber showed a similar tendency to stomata, significant at 5% levels within S. nigra individuals (male, female and monoecious). Chlorophyll contents were also variable in inter and intra species and in general K. japonica showed higher levels of chlorophyll contents than Schisandra spp. plants.

  • In 2006, pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, was isolated from about 50 years old trees of Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis showing leaf-wilt and -drying symptoms in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Isolation of pinewood nematodes from sapwood of infected pine trees showed no difference in population density between tree species and among the sampling heights on the main stem. Migration of pinewood nematodes in the host tree were investigated by inoculation of red pine (P. densiflora, 3 years old) seedlings with B. xylophilus. The nematodes seemed to move in red pine seedlings prior to multiplication and it might have taken about 20 days to start multiplication and expression of symptoms including wilt and dieback. In initial time after inoculation, nematodes started migration through the cortical resin canal from inoculated site and further showed upward and downward movements. More nematodes were observed in cortical resin canal during early period of inoculation and later in resin canal of xylem and tracheid also while, the pith still remained free from nematode. The density of B. xylophilus was higher in seedlings of low-vigor with poor root growth than in seedlings of normal root growth. Seedlings showing high density of B. xylophilus exhibited stem discoloration and secondary infection by fungus at the inoculation site.

  • Fruit growth in kiwifruit shows double sigmoid curve, but it does not certainly indicate as years. Therefore, I though the reason to be easy to the effect of water state change in kiwifruit, investigated diurnal change in water status of fruit tissues with an isoipiestic psychrometers against the fruit growth stage of kiwifruit in 1995 and 1996. Diurnal change in the fruit tissue water potential were little, but violent for fruti growth state III in 1996. The potential of two years dropped gradually approach to harvest time. On the other hand, osmotic potential of the tissues indicated to very similar to water potential, dropped rapidly -1.5MPa before dawn, recovered -1 MPa after 3 h on October 14, were -1~-1.7 MPa at the fruit commercial harvest in 1995. It had a tendency to lower in 1996 than in 1995. It was recorded to the minimum air temperature at the first for an autumn in 1995; 13$^{\circ}C$ from the middle night of October 13 to dawn of October 14. Leaves water potential, which is related to water status of xylem, nearly fell below -1 MPa at before dawn from stage II in 1996. However, it fell so low only at commercial in 1995. At the stage II, osmotic potential and ascent of the turgor pressure was high than 1995-fruit. There parameter suggested that three of kiwifruit in 1996 were status of water stress for stage III. The results from this study indicated that difference of fruit growth between 1995-fruit and 1996-fruit was affected by water status of the fruit tissues, which was influenced by weather condition.

  • Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources that have many advantages such as fast growing, easy cultivation, short rotation, and a relatively lower price. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) by age from one-year-old to five-year-old were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also, the crystalline properties such as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were investigated by an X-ray diffraction method. In one-year-old bamboo xylem, a few vascular bundles showed missing bundle sheath in near the intercellular space. Moreover, one-year-old bamboo had the shortest fiber length and the smallest values in vessel diameter, width of vascular bundle, and thickness of inner layer. One-year-old bamboo also showed the smallest values in the crystallinity and crystallite width. Near epidermis samples had longer fiber length and greater vascular bundle spacing than near pith samples. Relative crystallinity and crystallite width near the epidermis were also higher than near the pith. This study revealed significant differences in qualitative and quantitative anatomical characteristics between one-year-old and two-year- or more old Moso bamboos. It is concluded that the structural differences by bamboo age can be used to differentiate the characteristics of juvenile and mature bamboo.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of weed control and lodging reduction in the cultivation of buckwheat. The effect of weed control was significant. In the herbicide plot, nevertheless, grain yield and plant height were more decreased than habitual and vinyl mulching plots. Therefore, the application of herbicide was considered unnecessary in buckwheat cultivation having short growth period. In the habitual plot, dominant weed species are Digitaria sanguinalis, Erigeron annuus, E. canadensis, Setaria viridis, and Stellaria alsine var. undulata. On the effect of plant dwarf agent, C.C.C. and TIBA, plant height became shorter than habitual plot but the grain yield decreased. The latter tip pinching time, the less in grain yield which indicate tip pinching is ineffective in grain yield and lodging reduction. Among the wild species and cultivars of Fagopyrum, F. urophyllum was differentiated into xylem and phloem tissues indicating woody plant. Stem hardness of this species was the hardest as 625,110,000 dyne/cm$^2$which is at least 3.5 times harder than F. esculentum cv. Suwon #12. Therefore, it needs that the woody habitat gene of F. urophyllum is transfered into other cultivars in buckwheat breeding strategy.

  • Some Korean terminologies related to the structures of vascular tissues in plant morphology, written differently depending upon textbooks and dictionaries, were analysed to propose properly expressed Korean terminologies. A total of 14 university textbooks such as general biology, plant biology, and plant morphology were selected and investigated. The terminologies on the xylem structures, i.e., apotracheal parenchyma, paratracheal parenchyma, tylose, and tangential (longitudinal) section; and on the pit structures i.e., simple pit, bordered pit, aspirated bordered pit, and pit aperture; and on the stelar structures, i.e., haplostele, actinostele, plectostele, and solenostele were examined. The definition and etymology of the terminologies were traced in 4 textbooks of plant anatomy and 2 dictionaries of biology and botany written in English. And then reasonably expressed Korean terminologies, mostly written in Chinese characters, were suggested. The terminologies were compared with those that appeared in the Iwanami dictionary of biology published in Japan. It was expected that the results would contribute to promote mutual understanding between teachers and students in learning plant biology.
