  • Many automobile assembly workers often do several cycles of tasks continuously, i.e., without breaks, to get a longer break. This is not recommended since the dose of fatigue increases exponetially with time and it takes much longer time to recover. In this study, a laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of work/rest schedules on workload of a repetitive upper-limb task. Eleven male subjects participated in the experiment, in which simulated screw driving tasks were carried out repetitively with 3 different work/rest schedules: standard breaks(1 cycle of work at a time, 60 20-s breaks), medium breaks(5 cycles of work at a time, 12 100-s breaks), and long breaks(10 cycles of work at a time, 6 200-s breaks). The result showed that medium- and long-breaks schedules significantly increased the level of perceived discomfort and %HRR as compared to the standard-break schedule. The subjects' preference was not statistically different among work/rest schedules, which might be caused from the absolutely low level of workload of the experimental tasks. From the results, it is recommended to have frequent and shorter breaks rather than infrequent and longer breaks to decrease the level of physical workload. A more expanded studies, however, should be carried out to provide more practical safety guidelines on the work practice of continuous working without breaks among automobile assembly workers.

  • It is naturally to be expected that the stress of seafarers has some specific characters compared to other workers who are labouring on land. Because the physical rigors of working and living at sea has been endured as a part of job. The excessive stress caused by shipboard life, their jobs, can weaken the health status and court the work related accidents. Also it will be the immediate causes of marine accidents such as collision, sinking etc. In this paper, a questionnaire survey was undertaken to find out the approximate quantity and source of seafarer's occupational stress. And the heart rate of deck officers on duty was measured to develop a profile of correlation between the stress and the work.

  • Frozen food processing workers work under a cold environment which can cause several adverse health effects. This study explored factors affecting workers' health in the frozen food industry in Thailand. Participants comprised 497 workers exposed to a cold working environment and 255 office workers who served as the controls. Data were collected by a survey on the work environment, and the interview of workers for abnormal symptoms. The exposed group had the following characteristics: 52.7% male, overall average age of 27 (SD 6.6) years old, attained elementary education (Grade 4 and Grade 6) (54.1%), married (48.9%), smokers (21.3%), alcohol consumption (31.0%), duration of work was between 1 and 5 years (65.2%), working 6 days a week (82.7%), 1-5 hours of overtime per week (33.8%), office workers (33.9%); work category: sizing (6.9%), peeling (28.3%) dissecting (22.2%), and in the warehouse (8.6%). The temperature in the work environment ranged from $17.2^{\circ}C$ to $19.2^{\circ}C$ in most sections, $-18.0^{\circ}C$ in the warehouse, and $25^{\circ}C$ in the office areas. Warehouse workers had more abnormal symptoms than controls including repeated pain in the musculoskeletal system (OR 11.9; 95% CI 6.12-23.45), disturbance throughout the body (OR 4.60; 95% CI 2.00-10.56), respiratory symptoms (OR 9.73; 95% CI 3.53-26.80), episodic finger symptoms (OR 13.51; 95% CI 5.17-35.33). The study results suggest that workers' health should be monitored especially with regard to back and muscle pain, respiratory symptoms, episodic finger symptoms, and cardiovascular symptoms. Health promotion campaigns such as antismoking and reduction of alcohol consumption should be established because smoking and alcohol consumption are contributing factors to the pathogenesis of Raynaud's phenomenon and peripheral vascular disorders such as hypertension and heart disease.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study has been performed to find the relationship between seafarers' cumulative fatigue and stress by evaluating autonomic nervous functions and the results of surveys conducted using questionnaires. Methods : The subjects were seafarers working on various ships (home trade ships) of South Korea, who were healthy adults without any diseases, as confirmed through preliminary surveys were recruited through simple random sampling. A device that measures autonomic nervous functions by analyzing heart rate variability, which is also used often in clinical diagnoses and studies at universities, university hospitals, and general hospitals was used to measure the seafarers' cumulative fatigue and stress. Pearson's correlation analyses were also conducted to test the relationship between cumulative fatigue and stress measured by evaluating autonomic nervous functions and the results of surveys conducted with questionnaires. Results : There was no correlation between mean cumulative fatigue measured for each ship type and seafarers position through autonomic nervous functions evaluation and fatigue severity scale (FSS). There also was no correlation between the mean levels of stress measured for each ship type and seafarers position through autonomic nervous functions evaluation and survey scores of Korean occupational stress scale (KOSS). Conclusion : Therefore, in order to prevent man-made accidents in the sea among seafarers working with irregular port entry/departure schedules and under environments involving continued vibration, noises, and shaking, it is necessary to analyzed cumulative fatigue and stress scientifically and objectively, such as through autonomic nervous functions evaluation rather than through surveys.

  • In this study we examined the greenhouse worker's work load to test the efficiency of the developed vehicles (hand operated vehicle (HV), simple battery-powered autonomous vehicle (AV)). The subject of this study were healthy adult females who had experience in growing crops. We measured workers' heart rate, blood Pressure. rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, oxygen consumption and blood lactate level as a physiological index of work load. The results of this study are as follows : The test group using experimental vehicle showed the lower heart rate (mean$\pm$S.D. for HV, AV respectively 74$\pm$5, 75$\pm$3 beats/min, p<0.01) than the control group (84$\pm$8beat/min) not using experimental vehicle and the lower systolic blood Pressure (HV, AV respectively 109$\pm$8, 109$\pm$9 mmHg, p<0.01) than the control group (121$\pm$11 mmHg), and lower rectal temperature(HV, AV respectively 37.0$\pm$0.1, 36.8$\pm$0.2$^{\circ}C$, p<0.01) than the control group (37.0$\pm$0.2$^{\circ}C$), and the less oxygen consumption (HV, AV respectively 2.13$\pm$0.09, 1.66$\pm$0.52$m\ell$/kg/min, p<0.01) than the control group(2.43$\pm$0.12$m\ell$/kg/min), and the lower blood lactate level (HV, AV respectively 2.03$\pm$1.00, 1.66$\pm$0.52mmol, p<0.01) than the control group (2.43$\pm$0.12mmol). Judging from these results, these experimental vehicles for greenhouse workers can be confirmed as a useful tool. It is suggested that these vehicles would alleviate the peasant's syndrome including muscle fatigue and musculoskeletal disease usually caused by working in an uncomfortable posture.
