The concept of workers' participation in occupational health was introduced to Korea recently in relation to primary health care in occupational health. But there is confusion and debate about workers' participation concept. The purpose of this study was to review the concepts of workers' participation and to conduct evaluation the workers' participation status in occupational health and safety, 394 workers and 54 employers (5.6%) in north area of Kyunggi-Do, were selected and interviewed with a questionnaire by a trained interviewer from August to September 1990. In general, the concept of workers' participation is based on industrial domocratisation and Declaration of Human Rights which had been powerful ideologies in labor movement. Contrary to workers' participation, community participation is rooted in the Health Rights. So, it is necessary to consider concept of workers' participation to improve participation. The results of survey were as follows. 1. Most of companies (71.75) carried out occupational health education to workers in study area. 2. The Occupational Safety and Health Committee (OSHC) were set up in 24.1% among the study companies, and 72.7% of workers among respondents thought that OSHC was helpful to workers health. 3. The workers signed his name to personal health report in 43.1% and the rate of participation in occupational environment examination was 54.9%. 4. The workers prefer the OSHC (39.3%), owner (35.1%) and union (25.8%) as a occupation health organisation, but owners prefer OSHC (54.5%), manager (43.2%) and union (2.3%). 5. Among the factors of the general characteristics, the existence of labor union was a major determinant of workers' attitude and level of workers' participation. As we have seen, most levels of workers' participation are low in occupational health. The variable of existence of labor union among the factors was a ma determinant of workers attitude and level of workers' participation. Therefore, in order to promote workers health, it is necessary to ponder long deeply on occupational health care system under the viewpoint of workers' participation.

This study explores how unmarried workers use their leisure time according to the 2009 Korean Time Use Survey. The purposes of this study are: 1) to investigate leisure time as it relates to leisure participation rates and leisure participation time and 2) to analyze the effect of socio-demographic variables on leisure time and leisure participation by unmarried workers. The following is a summary of the major findings. First, leisure participation differed with variations in leisure activities. Unmarried workers participated in media contact, human relations activities, and hobby activities more than other activities. Participation in learning activities was higher on weekdays than on Sunday. Men participated in sports and outdoor activities more than women on Sundays. The participation rate of media contact was the highest, while the participation rate of volunteer activities was the lowest. Second, influencing factors on leisure time included gender, age, monthly income, and gender role attitudes when work time was controlled. For example, unmarried workers with egalitarian attitudes spent less leisure time. Third, gender was the strongest determinant of leisure participation. The probability of women's leisure participation was higher than men except in regards to sports and outdoor activities, and hobby activities.
The purpose of this study was to identify the educational and ecological factors (environment and infra-structure) associated with workers' participation to safety and health education at work (SHEW) based on the PRECEDE constructs. A total of 590 workers (484 in manufacturing and 106 in construction companies) finished the self-administered survey. Survey packets were delivered to the safety and health manager (SHM) in survey companies and the SHMs conducted the self-administered survey in their companies. The questionnaire includes demographics, epidemiological constructs, and educational and ecological constructs based on the PRECEDE model. Participation to SHEW was better in the manufacturing sector than in the construction sector (p<.001). Environmental, reinforcing, and enabling factors were better in the manufacturing companies than in the construction companies. Male worker, better perceived efficacy of SHEW, higher social support for SHEW, assignment of SHM at work, and better safety and health management level at work were significantly associated with workers' better participation to SHEW (p<.05). Those factors accounted for 45.9% of total variance of workers' participation to SHEW.
The purpose of this study is to review the labor force partitpation rate and work environment characteristics of female workers to provide basic information for establishment and implementation of effective policies related to accident prevention and workers health protection for female workers. It was analyzed employment status, work environment and injuries and illnesses based on economic activity census results, compensation of industrial injury and the second working condition survey. According to economic activity census results, female labor force participation rate has been steadily increased, whereas male labor force participation rate has been decreased since 1970. Industrial accident rate has been declined in male workers but that in female workers has been steadily increased even though male workers were higher accident rate than female workers. It was evaluated that female workers are vulnerable to industrial injuries and illnesses in the aspect of their working environment and employment status. Also, Substantial differences between female and male workers in occupational exposure patterns, occupational disease and occupational environments were observed. Therefore it was recommended that special care programs for female workers such as a specialized monitoring and management program should be introduced in the near future.
This study was designed to analyse the performance and the mechanisms of workers' participation and communications in industrial accident prevention activities leading to the reduction of industrial accidents. This study also aimed to find out the causal relationship influencing the promotion of prevention activities of industrial accidents. Of the manufacturing businesses with more than 5 workers as the population of the survey, a questionnaire was conducted with 2,500 workspaces chosen by stratified sampling. Out of 2500 workspaces, 971 workspaces equipped with industrial safety and health committee were analysed in this study. According to the results of this study, the primary influential factors on safety activities were the management of industrial accidents and the cooperations between supervisors and workers on site. The secondary influential factor was the establishment of industrial safety and health committee. Regarding the effectiveness of industrial accident reduction, -0.01 was shown by workplace safety activities by themselves and -0.09 was shown by participation and communications through indirect safety activities. This indicated workers' participation and communications play an important role in the reduction of industrial accidents. By discovering the clue to the mechanism of the workers' participation and communications, this study is expected to stimulate the reduction of industrial accidents by emphasizing the importance of workers' participation and communications in resolving the safety and health problem in the workplaces.
Purpose: This study was conducted to compare the changes in the levels of liver enzymes after providing health education to workers. Methods: Among 909 electronics-manufacturing workers, 96 (10.6%) workers had abnormal liver functions. Of these, male workers were randomly assigned into either the health education experimental group (48 [52.2%]) or the control group (44 [47.8%]). Depending on the level of participation in the health education, workers in the experimental group were classified into the participation (32 [34.8%]) and non-participation groups (16 [17.4%]). Changes in the levels of liver enzymes were compared among three groups. Results: The changes in the levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase (r-GTP) in the participation, non-participation, and control groups were $-25.3{\pm}54.5$ IU/L, $-4.4{\pm}24.1$ IU/L, and $-5.3{\pm}38.8$ IU/L, respectively (p=.036). Aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, waist circumference, body mass index, daily alcohol consumption, weekly exercise, and changes in smoking habits in the 3 groups did not differ significantly. In the multiple linear regression analysis, the variable of education participation revealed a significant regression coefficient of -25.10 when the change in r-GTP levels was the dependent variable. Conclusion: A brief health education targeted towards the management of liver disease among workers improved r-GTP levels.

This study was conducted to evaluate work environment monitoring program(WMP) under Industrial Safety and Health Act in Korea. WMP was evaluated by focusing on five key elements, such as purpose, subject, scope, method and workers' participation. The operation status of WMP was evaluated by using questionnaire to workers and data published by Ministry of Labor(MOL). Compliance rate of WMP was less 13 % in manufacturing workplaces. Over-exposure rate was steady state by annual trend. The degree of workers' satisfaction to WMP was just 24 %. A critical problem with the current WMP is that the employer and workers are not acting as main players. For a fundamental improvement in working condition to take place, participation of workers should be expanded and be guaranteed by law.

In this paper, "Gyeonggi-Do household weekend travel survey" is used in order to analyze activity participation and travel behavior for the people who go to work on Saturday(workers) and those who do not go to work(non-workers). To find out causal relationship between activity participation and travel behavior, Structural Equation Models are developed. Examination of the causal relationship between activity participation and travel behavior identifies three stages. Firstly, subsistence activities and leisure activities are generated. Secondly, each activity participation produces trip volumes and travel times. Finally, the sum of travel times forms trip volumes. Looking into the activity participation stages for the workers, their subsistence activies have a tendency to take place first, and leisure activities usually follow. Non-workers generate more simple trip chains and most of their first stage activities are leisure related.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of safety culture on the safety awareness and safety behaviors of manufacturing workers, and to suggest ways for manufacturing workers to understand the safety culture and improve safety awareness and safety behavior. In order to verify this, data were collected from 282 research subjects for 1 month from August 1 to 31, 2018, using the manufacturing workers in the Seoul and Gyeonggi area as a population. The results of the study are as follows. First, the safety culture (safety climate, safety procedures) has a positive effect on the safety awareness (recognition of importance, interest and participation inducement) of the manufacturing workers. Second, the safety culture (safety climate, safety procedures) has a positive effect on the safety behavior (safety planning, safety check) of manufacturing workers. Third, safety awareness (recognition of importance, interest and inducement of participation) has a positive influence on the safety behavior (safety planning, safety check) of manufacturing workers. Fourth, the safety awareness (recognition of importance, interest and inducement of participation) appears to have a partial mediating effect in relation to safety culture (safety climate, safety procedure) and safety behavior (safety planning, safety check) of manufacturing workers. The implication of this study is that although the industrial accidents have occurred in the manufacturing industry in recent years, the studies on the workers in the manufacturing industry are insufficient. However, this study is meaningful that it has suggested ways for manufacturing workers to understand the safety culture and improve the safety awareness and safety behavior by analyzing the effects of safety culture on safety awareness and safety behavior of manufacturing workers.
The goal of the study is to find what managerial characteristics affect the community spirit and participation of medical and psychiatric social workers. To do this, managerial characteristics were divided into organizational structure and culture as well as job satisfaction. As a result of an empirical study, while Herzberg's motivators or mental rewards, such as autonomy, sense of accomplishment, and sense of respect, improved the levels of community spirit and participation, Herzberg's hygiene factors or economic rewards did not have any relationship with them statistically. This means that mental rewards equivalent to those of other professions in hospitals will improve the professional identity and activities of social workers, who are working with diverse professions in hospitals. On the other hand, organizational structure and culture were not significant statistically.
