Performance assessment of pitch-type wave energy converter in irregular wave conditions on the basis of numerical investigation

  • In this paper, a pitch-type wave energy converter (WEC-rotor) is investigated in irregular wave conditions for the real sea testing at the west coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. The present research builds on and extends our previous work on regular waves to irregular waves. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the WEC-rotor are assessed by establishing a quasi-two-dimensional numerical wave tank using computational fluid dynamics by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The numerical solution is validated with physical experiments, and the comparison shows good agreement. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic performance of the WEC-rotor is explored by investigating the effect of the power take-off (PTO) loading torque by one-way and two-way systems, the wave height, the wave period, operational and high sea wave conditions. Irrespective of the sea wave conditions, the absorbed power is quadratic in nature with the one-way and two-way PTO loading systems. The power absorption increases with the wave height, and the increment is rapid and mild in the two-way and one-way PTO loading torques, respectively. The pitch response amplitude operator increases as the wave period increases until the maximum value and then decreases. For a fixed PTO loading, the power and efficiency are higher in the two-way PTO loading system than in the one-way PTO loading system at different wave periods.

교량 스틸박스거더 도장공사의 유기용제 측정 실험 (Measurement of Organic Solvent from Painting Work Inside the Steel Box Girder of Bridge)

  • This study is to find out how organic solvent will be propagated from painting inside the steel box girder of bridge. $2.9m{\times}3.0m$ of inside size of steel box girder is not suitable for painters to do his work comfortably and hygienically. Substance density(ppm)inside the space of the box unsatisfactory hygienical condition. Most of organic solvent(mainly toluene) came down to 0.5m in two minutes and 53sec. But personal protection for painter should be properly kept against flying this heavy organic solvent. longitudinally 27.1m in length is a cell unit of the whole length of bridge. Model XP-3l6A made in Japan is a main instrumentation adjusted to sense organic solvent especially toluene which can be measured up to 10,000ppm. Scenario analysis by computer program, safer release 2.0 has been performed first to estimate how the organic solvent will be propagated. And then actual test was done as a model. This has been measured for approximately five(5) minutes, with 30 sec interval. Actual measurement results showed much higher $10{\sim}20%$ than result analyzed by the computer program, meaning that this painting work can give worse effect to the worker who is painting inside the box girder of the bridge. The first meas urement level over the floor set up at 30cm height from the floor, because organic solvent was estimated to stay at the level. and then, they were measured at 1.0m, 1.5m level respectively, more.

지역별 기후에 따른 고소작업가능률 산정 - 서울, 인천, 부산 지역을 중심으로 - (A Study of the Work Efficiency in the High Altitude according to Climatic Elements)

  • 프로젝트 초기단계에서 신뢰도 높은 공정계획을 수립하고 공사기간 산정을 정확하게 하는 것은 공사 지연을 예방할 수 있으며, 연속적으로 발생하는 의사결정을 신속하고 정확하게 내리는 데 도움이 된다. 특히 초고층 프로젝트의 경우는 작업이 복잡하고 공사비가 크기 때문에 공사기간을 정확히 예상하는 것이 어렵고 공사지연시 발생하는 손실이 막대하다. 따라서 월별 작업가능률을 정확히 예상하고 적용하는 연구가 매우 중요하며 이는 초고층 프로젝트의 성패와 직결된다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 고도가 높아질수록 기후 환경은 지표면 근처와 차이가 생기기 때문에 일반적인 프로젝트의 작업가능률 산정방법은 초고층 프로젝트에서 정확성이 떨어지게 된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 작업높이에 따라 변하는 기후요소 변화를 예측하여 이를 적용하여 높이에 따른 작업가능률을 산정하고, 각 지역의 기후특색에 따른 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 산정된 결과에 따르면 작업고도가 높아질수록 부산, 인천, 서울 순으로 작업가능률이 떨어졌으며, 이는 풍속의 영향이 가장 컸다. 이러한 작업높이를 고려한 지역별 작업가능률 산정은 향후 초고층 프로젝트 공사기간 산정업무, 타당성 조사, 대상 지역 선택 등에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The Effects of Activities and Working Conditions on Fire Accidents on Construction Sites

  • Accidents on construction sites involving fires do not occur as often as accidents involving falls from height or collapses. However, once a fire accident occurs, there is a high risk of a large number of casualties. Fire on construction sites is affected by working conditions and the types of activities the construction workers are engaged in at the sites. This study aims to identify activities and working conditions at construction sites that are vulnerable to fire, and analyse how they correlate with each other and how they affect the causes and consequences of fire accidents at construction sties. I analysed 40 fire accident reports and listed the situations vulnerable to fire at construction sites considering direct causes, activities, and working conditions. The most dangerous combination of fire hazards can be the heating devices used during rest/sleep in the office/cabin/storage during cold weather. The next most hazardous combination can be sparks arising from painting, waterproofing, insulation, plumbing, or welding/melting work in an underground or confined space.

Automatic Person Identification using Multiple Cues

  • This paper describes a method for vision-based person identification that can detect, track, and recognize person from video using multiple cues: height and dressing colors. The method does not require constrained target's pose or fully frontal face image to identify the person. First, the system, which is connected to a pan-tilt-zoom camera, detects target using motion detection and human cardboard model. The system keeps tracking the moving target while it is trying to identify whether it is a human and identify who it is among the registered persons in the database. To segment the moving target from the background scene, we employ a version of background subtraction technique and some spatial filtering. Once the target is segmented, we then align the target with the generic human cardboard model to verify whether the detected target is a human. If the target is identified as a human, the card board model is also used to segment the body parts to obtain some salient features such as head, torso, and legs. The whole body silhouette is also analyzed to obtain the target's shape information such as height and slimness. We then use these multiple cues (at present, we uses shirt color, trousers color, and body height) to recognize the target using a supervised self-organization process. We preliminary tested the system on a set of 5 subjects with multiple clothes. The recognition rate is 100% if the person is wearing the clothes that were learned before. In case a person wears new dresses the system fail to identify. This means height is not enough to classify persons. We plan to extend the work by adding more cues such as skin color, and face recognition by utilizing the zoom capability of the camera to obtain high resolution view of face; then, evaluate the system with more subjects.

A numerical study of a confined turbulent wall jet with an external stream

  • Wall jet flow exists widely in engineering applications, including the simulation of thunderstorm downburst outflows, and has been investigated extensively by both experimental and numerical methods. Most previous studies focused on the scaling laws and self-similarity, while the effect of lip thickness and external stream height on mean velocity has not been examined in detail. The present work is a numerical study, using steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations at a Reynolds number of $3.5{\times}10^4$, of a turbulent plane wall jet with an external stream to investigate the influence of the wall jet domain on downstream development of the flow. The comparisons of flow characteristics simulated by the Reynolds stress turbulence model closure (Stress-omega, SWRSM) and experimental results indicate that this model may be considered reasonable for simulating the wall jet. The confined wall jet is further analyzed in a parametric study, with the results compared to the experimental data. The results indicate that the height and the width of the wind tunnel and the lip thickness of the jet nozzle have a great effect on the wall jet development. The top plate of the tunnel does not confine the development of the wall jet within 200b of the nozzle when the height of the tunnel is more than 40b (b is the height of jet nozzle). The features of the centerline flow in the mid plane of the 3D numerical model are close to those of the 2D simulated plane wall jet when the width of the tunnel is more than 20b.

비점원오염모델을 이용한 논의 영농방법별 오염부하량 예측 (Estimation of the Pollutant Loads from Paddy Fields by Cultivation Practices Using a Non-point-source Model)

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the pollutant loads from paddy fields by cultivation practices using a non-point-sources models. One of them is CREAMS-PADDY model that was developed considering the water balance and mass balance of paddy fields. The CREAMS-PADDY model was applied to provide basic data to reduce runoff loadings under various scenarios such as various water management control and various fertilizer condition. The model was verified against T-N, T-P and runoff flow data collected during cropping periods at 2000. The model results agreed well with the measured data in verification. The results showed that the model could be used for estimating the runoff loadings from irrigated paddy fields by cultivation practices was possible. Comparison of simulated the standard height and the sluice management of T-N and T-P runoff loadings from paddy fields were +32.4%, +10.3% in 10 mm below the standard height, -29.2%, -35.9% in 20 mm above the standard height, 52.6%, 59.0% in 40 mm above the standard height, respectively. Comparison of simulated the standard fertilizer and the fertilizer control of T-N and T-P runoff loadings from paddy fields were -1.3%, -21.7%in reduction of conventional fertilizer 30%, -1.0%, -12.5% in reduction of standard fertilizer 30%, respectively. Therefore, reducing nonpoint-sources nutrient loading by reducing fertilization may not work well in the range of normal paddy rice farming practices, and instead it could be achieved by reducing surface drainage outflow.

건설현장 모니터링을 위한 단안 카메라 기반의 소실점을 이용한 높이 결정 (Height Determination Using Vanishing Points of a Single Camera for Monitoring of Construction Site)

  • 정부의 중·소형 민간공사장 안전관리 강화대책 발표에 따라 CCTV 설치 의무화 대상이 대형 공사장에서 중·소형 공사장으로 확대되었다. 하지만 기존의 건설현장의 CCTV는 안전관리를 위한 단순 관제용으로 활용되고 있어 건설현장의 모니터링을 위한 연구가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 단안 카메라를 이용하여 촬영한 단 영상을 기반으로 3개의 소실점(vanishing point)을 계산한 후 내부표정요소 정보를 포함하고 있는 카메라 행렬을 결정하고 기준 객체의 높이를 통해 대상 객체의 높이를 계산하여 정확도를 검증하는 연구를 수행하였다. 단안 카메라 기반의 소실점을 이용한 높이 결정 실험을 통해 별도의 지상기준점 측량 없이 단 영상만으로 대상 객체의 높이를 결정할 수 있었으며, 정확도를 평가한 결과 평균제곱근오차는 ±0.161m로 나타났다. 따라서, 단안 카메라를 이용하여 촬영한 단영상을 통해 건설현장의 공사 진척도를 모니터링할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Sustainable Buildings - or Sustainable Cities?

  • China's rapidly growing cities offer a unique opportunity to create highly sustainable communities. Architects and their clients, typically real estate developers, are highly focused on strategies that are effective at reducing energy and water usage at the scale of the individual building or within a master plan of multiple related buildings. However, a closer look at energy consumption reveals that transportation uses more energy worldwide than residential and commercial buildings combined. In light of this, it is appropriate that China is making massive investments in transportation infrastructure like heavy rail rapid transit and grade separated expressways, but the end result of these investments to date has been to enable people to live further from where they work and shop rather than closer - while simultaneously not creating walkable communities. Using positive and negative examples from Asia and the rest of the world, this article will investigate the specific urban design policies such as height limits, setbacks, land use restrictions, parking ratios, and parcel size which might change to enable the creation of truly sustainable communities for China's 21st century.

  • Geotextile tubes hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials have been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering in recent years(shore protection structure, detached breakwater, groins and jetty). It can also be used to isolate contaminated material from harbor, detention basin dredging, and to use this unit as dikes for reclamation work. Recently, new preliminary design criteria supported by model and prototype tests, and some stability analysis calculations have been studied. The stability analysis of geotextile tube is composed geotechnical and hydrodynamic analysis. The stability check points are sliding failure, overturning, bearing capacity failure against the wave attack. In this paper presented the construction procedure and in-situ measurement(properties of filling material, effective height variation, stress variation at geotextile tube bottom) of geotextile tube at Young-Jin Bay and stability analysis by theoretical method and hydraulic model tests
