The purpose of this study were to determine causes of low back pain in bus drivers who usually work in prolonged sitting position and to find the relationship of back pain with general characteristics and work environmental characteristics, stress symptoms, to com맹re lordosis angle of habitual driving posture and resting posture in low back pain group and non-low back pain group, and to use this result as a basis for improvement of work environment and comprehensive rehabilitative management of low back pain. Ninety-eight bus drivers were selected from the membership of an urban transit union in Seoul. These informations were collected from May 1, 1997 to May 25, 1997 by means of structured questionnaires and X-ray findings. These data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test, logistic regression using SAS. The major results were as follows: 1. Of the respondents, 66.3% of bus drivers were found to be experiencing back pain. 2. Of the respondents of low back pain groups, 78.5% reported that major cause of low back pain was due to prolonged sitting. 3. The group with experiences of frequent or continuous vibration had more low back pain (p<0.05). There were no significant differences among other work environmental factors. 4. Average stress score was significantly higher in the group with low back pain than in the group without low back pain (p<0.05). 5. The results of the logistic regression analyses were statistically significant vibration from seat and stress score among the risk factors (p<0.05). 6. Averaged lordosis angle of habitual driving posture was $7.6{\pm}14.9$ degrees in low back pain group, $16.5{\pm}8.7$ degrees in non-low back pain and averaged lordosis angle of resting sitting posture was $10.8{\pm}13.7$ degrees in low back pain, $18.9{\pm}9.6$ degrees in non-low back pain group but the difference in mean lordosis angles of two groups was not statistically significant. The results of this study indicate that professional drivers developed chronicity of low back pain due to unfit seat, poor habitual posture and stress from vibration or other risk factors. Therefore, there is need to improve work environment, i.e. enough resting, to set a seat to support lumbar spine properly and to provide comprehensive rehabilitation program including early diagnosis, proper treatment and education for self help management.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic data, such as exerting muscle power of the lower-extremity, EMG test and pressure distribution for designing ergonomic workstation in sitting posture. The exerting muscle power of the lower-extremity was measured by PRIMUS in 4 postures of 90$^{\circ}$, 120$^{\circ}$, 150$^{\circ}$ and 180$^{\circ}$. And performed ANOVA test on Max. and Mean 100%MVC. In EMG test for surveying muscle mobiligation, 5 muscles(Rectus Femoris, Vastus Lateralis, Gastrocnemius, Soleus, Tibialis Anterior) were employed. Additional experiment in pressure distribution in sitting posture by Pliance(16$\time$16 poles), Max. pressure was measured and performed ANOVA test on the results. Concludingly, sitting posture with 120$^{\circ}$ lower-extremity is the best design criterion for ergonomic workstation in sitting posture.
PURPOSE: Forward head posture (FHP) is one of the most common postural problems among white-collar workers who perform highly repetitive tasks in the same position. The aim of this study was to research the effects of thoracic and lumbar support fixtures on forward head posture (FHP) during visual display terminal (VDT) work. METHODS: The subjects were 36 healthy male students with no problems in their medical history or respiratory systems. The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (n=12), thoracic support fixtures (n=12), and lumbar support fixtures (n=12). We conducted a text typing task of the same content for 20 minutes, and evaluated the angles, including the craniovertebra angle (CVA), craniorotation angle (CRA) with photogrammetry. RESULTS: The thoracic and lumbar support fixture groups showed a statistically significant difference at the CVA and CRA to the control group (p<.05), and the post-hoc test showed an increase of the CVA and decrease of the CRA than the control group. However, when we compared the effects of thoracic and lumbar support fixtures on FHP, there was no significant difference in the difference in decrease of the CVA or increase of the CRA (p>.05). CONCLUSION: We determined that VDT work using thoracic and lumbar support fixtures has a positive effect on forward head posture in white-collar workers. Further studies are required to find the more effective location of support fixtures.
The casing oscillator used for basic construction of buildings, factories and bridges is a construction machine, which rotates and rolls the casing to insert it into the ground. It is very important that the casing is positioned perpendicular to the sea level regardless of the slope of the ground. In this paper, we present a new casing oscillator that doesn't need additional work to level the ground for the casing insertion. The kinematic analysis fur work space of a casing oscillator is presented and carried out with auto-balancing of the casing oscillator using posture feedback control.
This study was performed to design and develop an ergonomic equipment for strawberry sorting and packing in agricultural working environments. Potential risk of work related musculo-skeletal disorders associated with farm workers performing strawberry sorting and packing was analyzed through interviews, field surveys, work measurement, and working posture evaluation. For the evaluation of working posture, we used REBA, OWAS, and RULA assessment methods to identify multi-factorial risk factors. Based on the result of comprehensive assessment, a new concept of multi-level rotating table for strawberry sorting and packing was proposed to modify awkward working postures and improve the effectiveness of the farm work. Finally, the characteristics and effectiveness of new equipment was discussed in terms of improvements in productivity, safety, and subjective ratings of farm workers. The results of analysis showed that working conditions improved significantly.
Economic burden of work-related musculoskeletal disorder(WMDs) is increasing. Known causes of WMDs include improper posture, repetition, load, and temperature of workplace. Among them, improper postures play an important role. A smart sensor called SensorTag is employed to estimate the trunk postures including flexion-extension, lateral bend, and the trunk rotational speeds. Measuring gravitational acceleration vector in the smart sensor along the tri-orthogonal axes offers an orientation of the object with the smart sensor attached to. The smart sensor is light in weight and has small form factor, making it an ideal wearable sensor for body posture measurement. Measured data from the smart senor is wirelessly transferred for analysis to a smartphone which has enough computing power, data storage and internet-connectivity, removing need for additional hardware for data post-processing. Based on the estimated body postures, WMDs risks can be conviently gauged by using existing WMDs risk assesment methods such as OWAS, RULA, REBA, etc.
Resultant compressions on the L5/S1 joint of six subjects were studied as they lif- ted light weights in sitting and standing work postures. The subjects activities were photographed and analysed later by a static biomechamical computer model. Statistically significant differences were found between the result of the two postures analyses. Sitting posture showed significantly high compressions on the joint when doing several material handling tasks having the same work loads from the hip joint. Therefore, it is recommended that working with light weights in standing is less hazardous than doint the same work sitting postures, although both the maximum compression forces are under the Action Limit suggested by NIOSH.
The objective of this study was to investigate the validity of a self-administered checklist for office ergonomics. Total 71 office workers were asked to fill up the checklist, while 3 trained ergonomists assessed the work posture of the workers. It was shown that out of 10 checklist items, there were significant differences for 8 posture-related items between the worker group and the professional group. Therefore, when a checklist is applied to office environment, the posture-related aspect should be evaluated by ergonomic professionals.
