  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mathematical components of word problems and the structure of the components, to examine the characteristics of the understanding of mathematics high achievers about word problems, and ultimately to devise a teaching method geared toward facilitating learner understanding of the word problems. Given the findings of the study, the following conclusion was reached: First, word problems could be categorized according to their mathematical components, namely the mathematical structure of multiple variables provided to learners for their problem solving. And learner's reaction might hinge on the type of word problems. Second, the mathematics high achievers relied on diverse strategies to understand the mathematical components of word problems to solve the problems. The use of diverse strategies made it possible for them to succeed in problem solving. Third, identifying the characteristics of the understanding of the mathematics high achievers about word problems made it possible to layout successful lesson plans that stressed understanding of the mathematical structure of word problems. And the teaching plans enabled the learners to get a better understanding of the given word problems.

  • Elementary school students feel more difficult the mathematical word problems than the numberical formula. I think that this reason isn't the ability of mathematical calculation but the problems representation. It is demanded exactly understanding about the requirements of problem for improving ability of the mathematical word problem representation. It is necessary that we take multimedia data and communication for this, because web advances multimedia materialization and promotes mutual communication, then it gives us with the most environment for word problem representation learning. According to, this thesis is designed web-based system to improve ability of the mathematical word problem representation, applied the sixth grade it experimentally.

  • This study investigated children's realistic response on problematic word problems focused on number operations. Even though word problems and problem solving should be considered in terms of realistic context, results indicates that children's responses didn't show realistic consideration in solving problems. Also, children showed their tendency of mindless or mechanical operation in solving problems and modeling problems

  • Students approach mathematical problem solving in fundamentally different ways, particularly problems requiring conceptual understanding and complicated strategies such as mathematical word problems. The main objective of this study is to compare students' performance with different cognitive styles (Field-dependent vs. Field-independent) on mathematics problem solving, particularly, in word problems. A sample of 180 school girls (13-years-old) were tested on the Witkin's cognitive style (Group Embedded Figures Test) and two mathematics exams. Results obtained support the hypothesis that students with field-independent cognitive style achieved much better results than Field-dependent ones in word problems. The implications of these results on teaching and setting problems emphasizes that word problems and cognitive predictor variables (Field-dependent/Field- independent) could be challenging and rather distinctive factors on the part of school learners.

  • Morphological analysis is used for searching sentences and understanding context. As most morpheme analysis methods are based on predefined dictionaries, the problem of a target word not being registered in the given morpheme dictionary, the so-called unregistered word problem, can be a major cause of reduced performance. The current practical solution of such unregistered word problem is to add them by hand-write into the given dictionary. This method is a limitation that restricts the scalability and expandability of dictionaries. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a novel method to automatically expand a dictionary by means of use-case analysis, which checks the validity of the unregistered word by exploring the use-cases through web crawling. The results show that the proposed method is a feasible one in terms of the accuracy of the validation process, the expandability of the dictionary and, after registration, the fast extraction time of morphemes.

  • With the recent development of deep learning technology, the areas of recommendation systems have also diversified. This paper studied algorithms to improve the learning rate and studied the significance results according to words through comparison with the performance characteristics of the Word2Vec model. The problem recommendation algorithm was implemented with the values expressed through the reflection of meaning and similarity test between texts, which are characteristics of the Word2Vec model. Through Word2Vec's learning results, problem recommendations were conducted using text similarity values, and problems with high similarity can be recommended. In the experimental process, it was seen that the accuracy decreased with the quantitative amount of data, and it was confirmed that the larger the amount of data in the data set, the higher the accuracy.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate future teachers' skills that can make problem solving methods concrete for 7-11 year old students. For the students in the concrete operations level, solutions of word problems should also be taught by concreting. But most of teacher candidates can not solve the problems without algebra because they got used to solve the word problems with algebra during their high school and university education. In this study, whether the teacher candidates have the skills of solving the primary school level problems without using algebra or not are being observed. At the end of this observation it is determinated that primary level teacher candidates generally prefer using algebra operations because of their former habits. The results show that in the education of the primary level teacher candidates, there is the need of developing the solving skills using figures and diagrams without algebra rather than algebraic solutions in word problems.

  • Problem representation is a key aspect in solving word problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of instructional program based on visual schema representing five types of word problems(Marshall, 1995). Two second grade classes of an elementary school located in Seoul were participated in this study. In experimental class, an instructional program including schema tools were suggested and administered and the other comparison group did have regular classes using diagrams and tables. Pre and post test including 15 word problems each were utilized to test students' problem solving ability. In addition, test scores on students' language ability were used to control the effects of word comprehension level on problem solving. The result revealed that experimental group showed higher problem representation and solving scores after controling the effects of pre-test. In addition, there was significant positive correlation between the ability to apply exact problem schema and problem solving results. The correlation was .58. This study showed even in the early developmental stage young students can get benefits from having instructions of word problem schema.

  • Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is the most widely used method in speech recognition. In general, HMM parameters are trained to have maximum likelihood (ML) for training data. This method doesn't take account of discrimination to other words. To complement this problem, this paper proposes a word verification method by re-recognition of the recognized word and its similar word using the discriminative function between two words. The similar word is selected by calculating the probability of other words to each HMM. The recognizer haveing discrimination to each word is realized using the weighting to each state and the weighting is calculated by genetic algorithm.
