Aldo Van Eyck and Herman Hertzberger explained 'In-between space' as an intermediate space between opposite elements such as whole and parts, inside and outside, open and close, central and decentral. From this idea, the meaning of 'in-between space' has developed and applied to works of Bernard Tschumi and Sou Fujimoto. In this study, the meaning of 'in-between space' was compared and analyzed based on two architects' works to reveal the design approach in terms of 'in-between space' Final Wooden House, N House, and Serpentine Gallery Pavilion among Sou Fujimoto's work were selected and Le Fresnoy, Lerner Student Center, and Acropolis Museum among Bernard Tschumi's work were selected to analyze. To understand their design approach, their works were compared and analyzed in architectural attitude, tools, construction style and the approach, concept, theme, relation, direction of in-between space. As a result, Sou Fujimoto uses 'in-between space' as a nebulous approach as intermediate space between opposite elements. For Bernard Tschumi, 'in-between space' is also an intermediate space to emphasize and make a tension between opposite elements. It is a method of solving the contradiction condition between old city environment and new architecture.

Structure Insulated Panel (SIP) is an wooden structure material with which structure and insulation functions are satisfied. Hence, it would be a cost-effective model to implement low energy house which has higher insulation and structure performance and which the wall thickness is able to be reduced. In this study, performance of thermal insulation and fire resistance were evaluated in order to verify applicability to low energy house. Fire resistance test is performed on vertical load bearing members for partitions, and the test results satisfy one hour of fire resistance condition according to KS F 2257. The members include two layers of fireproof gypsum board with thicknesses of 12.5mm attached to SIP. Thermal insulation performance is satisfied with the 2012 standard ($0.225W/m^2{\cdot}K$). As the performance of resistance and thermal insulation are satisfied, SIP is expected to be applied to low energy building materials. In the future, the structural safety will be confirmed by structural performance and seismic performance test and the guidelines for distribution will be drawn up.
A study on the traditional houses of North Korea(I) have been published in 1996. This paper is written to supplement the preceding paper. This paper aims at collecting new data of traditional house in North Korea. But still being prohibited for the researchers of South Korea to approach to the field, I had to depend on the memories and experiences of the immigrants from North Korea who are now living in Kangwon and Incheon Province. Through the questionnaire and drawings, they described vivid memory of their old houses. I was able to add new data of 70 cases, which are significant and valuable as much as those of the real field are. Those data, including the exisiting data, are enough for me to analize statstically the regional charateristics, the differnces among economical classes, and the periodical change. It opens the way for verfying the existing theory. Regional charateristics of house in North Korea can be described as followings: a. Hamkyong-do ; Concentrating spaces into one building, Double-fold type plan, Including 'cheongju-kan' space, Weak fences b. Pyongan-do ; Concentrating spaces into two buildings, 二 shape buildings , Single-fold type plan, Strong fence c. Pyongannam-do to Myolak mountains; Concentraing spaces into two buildings, ㄱ, ㄷ shape buildings, Single-fold type plan, Strong fence d. Southern area of Myolak mountains; Concentrating spaces into one building ㅁ shape building, Single-fold type plan with wooden floor space
The Purpose of this study was to investigate actual condition about the modem adaptation of interior elements(floor, wall, ceiling, door & window) in traditional thatched roof house. In the late Koryo Dynasty~early Joseon Dynasty, nationwide distribution of Ondol prompted the formation of ㄱ-shaped corner space. From this background, the spatial form changed according to the space function. In the case where the ondol is located in the bent portion, it would have formed a similar spatial form nationwide at the beginning of the 16th century. Until the middle of the 16th century the receptionists and the family rituals were carried out in the inner of the house, so ㄱ-shaped corner space gradually expanded. Also a special structure type using fultile rafters was used to cover the upper structure of the extended folded space. From the 17th century, ㄱ-shaped corner space was varied from wide and high to narrow and low. In addition to this, the space function of ㄱ-shaped corner is a small hall, a wooden floored room, and the kitchen. And Their spatial form also changes over time.
The purpose of this research was to find out the housing history of Sakhalin returnees in Ansan Gohyangmaeul since leaving hometown under the Japanese ruling period, who experienced two international migration for one's life. Face to face interview had been done with 20 returnees in the community center of Ansan Gohyangmaeul during October to December, 2008. The semi-structured questionnaire about housing the respondents lived in major life changes used to guide the individual interview. The results showed that personal life as well as housing histories were differed by the reason to move into Sakhalin, which still influenced the returnee' life up to now. The housing they had lived changed from barracks like a training camp, to Japanese small wooden cottage/row house, and then Russian brick house/ apartment. Housing alteration and addition and rebuilding were common to renew the old existing house. The boundary of residing area was mostly limited to the first residing location under soviet governing system throughout one's life without a long distance move. Housing satisfaction was very high in Gohyangmaeul because of the improvement of housing facilities and residence itself as well as the convenience of housing management, compared to former residence in Sakhalin. Economic and emotional aspects of life satisfaction were also high during about 8 years of living in the apartment. Forced movers still require the compensation on hand to either Korean or Japanese government no matter the amount. Social integration to the Korean community would be one of the main issues to new returnees as well as the already returned. In-depth interviews of case study need to reveal the unique housing experience of the forced mover according to the type of leaving hometown by oneself or by parents, and to returned region and time to motherland.
When Korea opened its ports and underwent Japanese colonization, many Japanese style houses were built in Korea. Following Korea's independence from Japan, Koreans began to reside in these houses. The objective of this study is to examine the current state of Japanese style residence areas and Japanese style houses in Korea, and to determine the change in the characteristics of dining kitchens that have taken place since Koreans have lived in them. In the process, while assimilation occurred, there was also a conflict between the residential lifestyles of the two cultures, developing into a state where two housing cultures co-existed. The dining kitchens showed the most sensitive adjustments to social changes, facilitating a number of important changes in the process of modernizing houses. In this regard, the intention is to determine how the dining kitchens responded to other areas within the house as they were being transformed. Research for this study is based on previous studies that were carried out in 1991 on Japanese style houses, in order to clearly define the process of change chronologically rather than from a single examination. In consequently, From the process of changes where from a conventional kitchen to DK anger, 1) The public space - wooden floor, living room, etc - had been formed in house spaces. 2) In the lifestyle, privacy secured. It was separated each functional spaces that greeting space for guests and family's space in the lifestyle. 3) The cause of variation could be summarized that differences of living style, a change of life and fuel.
The purpose of this study is providing useful information for consumer-friendly house plan by investigating remodeling apartments according to the area type and size. In order to achieve this aim, case study was applied. The case study was conducted of five small, medium, and large size apartments through depth-interviews, actual survey, and questionnaires on the remodeling behavior, interior design, and interior atmosphere. The results of the study are as follows: Structural alterations were frequent in communal area, and then in private and household areas. Changing lighting fixtures was frequent in all area types, and especially, in communal areas installing extra decoration was frequently observed. Besides, alterations of doors and window frames were carried out in communal, private, housework and service areas by using wood, aluminum sashes, double-glazing, and paint coating. Finally, in housework areas the material and color of counters were changed into wooden and achromatic.
Understanding of the properties of woods is important in wood utilization. Until now, traditional wooden houses(Korean-style house, Buddhist temple, royal palaces) and furniture have been made of domestic woods with the experience of a craftsman rather than the scientific knowledge on woods. Because of concrete-based houses and imported wood products and furniture, even wood craftsmen decrease in number, too. This study was carried out to collect wood samples growing in Korea and to measure wood characteristics. Anatomical, physical and mechanical properties of 37 wood species were investigated.
