The this study's objective was to conduct species identification and tree-ring dating for the wood elements of Daewoong-jeon(main temple), Hwagye-temple, Seoul, Korea. Most of the wood elements were made from Pinus spp.(hard pine). However, one large beam was constructed from Abies spp.. For the tree-ring dating, cores were taken from the elements using a drill, and ring-width plots of individual samples were produced with the TSAP software program. The tree-ring dating results showed that, the date of the outermost ring of most elements (20 elements), including beams and pillars, were from AD 1839 to 1870. Among them, five elements had bark, and felling dates were AD 1868 and 1869. These dates confirmed the historical records that Daewoongjeon was rebuilt in AD 1870 from the records of hidden materials(Bokjangmul) in Jongdori by the survey 2012.
This study examines the examples and changes of wooden member terms in Yeonggeon-euigwe(營建儀軌) in the era of Joseon Dynasty. As a result of examining examples, about 240 wood member terms were found on the basis of phonetic value and examples different from today's term use were also confirmed. Wood member terms were derived in variety and synonym and different style, that is, coexistence or transition of several notations as the term indicating the same member was found. Derivation of detail terms has the characteristic increasing on the basis of morpheme and formation of different notation followed Chinese notation or was caused by complex coinage features like a coined word of Korea by the meaning of a word and borrowed character notation borrowing sound and it is also related to the specificity of that time which had dual language system. The typical examples without different style for long were pillar, rafter, door and window. Examples with active generation and selection of different styles included beam, capital and bracket-system terms. Different styles were caused by the combination of several notations including borrowed character in the process of Chinese character notation borrowing sound, Korean unique character emphasizing and limiting combination of 木 (wood) with side of character and Chinese. Period showing remarkable change of example notation was the compilation of ${\ll}$the Hwa-Sung-Sung-Euk-Eui-Gue${\gg}$ 華城城役儀軌. ${\ll}$the Hwa-Sung-Sung-Euk-Eui-Gue${\gg}$ is the representative type uigwe made by printed type not by handicraft. Printing by type accompanies unification of the shape of a character necessarily and it was considered that it resulted in the unification of character of different style, the number of strokes and minute difference of strokes, and it was interpreted that common use of intentional notation with the unification of the shape of a character was achieved.
This paper aims at researching on the substantial characters of the memorial address, namely the mookseo-myeongs(墨書銘), written at the members of the wooden buildings in the late period of Goryeo Dynasty and the early period of JoseonDynasty. In this paper, I pursued to declare the systematic origins by the comparison the Buddhist buildings with the other buildings, on the focused the written patterns. Furthermore, I tried to examine the transitional trends in the late period of Joseon Dynasty. The results are as follow: First, it is supposed that the mookseo-myeongs of the Buddhist buildings were not used for the a memorial address for the ceremony of putting up the ridge beam, so to speak the sangryang-muns(上樑文), but the prayer address(發願文) to memorize the donations of the believers for the constructions. Second, it is supposed that 'the short sangryang-muns' were originated in the mookseo-myeongs of Buddhist buildings and the other ancient prayer address. In the late period of JoseonDynasty, those were established in the formal literary styles. Third, to the early period of JoseonDynasty, 'the long sangryang-muns' were partially used in the several royal palaces. In the late, those were widely used not only in the royal palaces but also in Buddhist buildings, but those literary patterns were rarely changed from the former types.
This study was conducted to identify wood species of 72 wooden parts (pillar, beam, jangyeo, purlin, judu, soro, bracket, deagong, ceiling panel, etc.) used for Daewungjeon Hall in the Woonsoosa Temple, Busan in Korea. Identified wood species were 67 Pinus spp. (Kesiya group), 4 Carpinus spp. and 1 Quercus spp. (Cerris group). In pillars, 14 red pines and 4 Carpinus and in purlins, 4 red pines and 1 Cerris were found. Other elements were red pines. Carpinus woods, which were used for the lower portions of three pillars (Dongbari), seemed repaired parts. A carved wood used for the stand of Buddhist statues was identified as Alnus spp. This study showed that Daewungjeon Hall of the Woonsoosa Temple was made mostly of red pines.

In Korean traditional wooden architecture, joint performance varies with the material characteristics of timber, the form of joint, the precision of timber-trimming and the like. Case studies prove that the beam-to-column joint type has large influence on the degrees of deformation and spacing. This is not only true of single-story buildings, but also of large-scale multi-story buildings more apparently. Therefore, this study followed the process of examining to joint types, producing their specimens and testing their structural performance. As a consequence of structural test, the dovetail joint specimen showed the best outcomes of the maximum load and rigidity. Synthesizing the structural performances by respective forms of joints, the Doraegeoji dovetail joint specimen showed the higher performance, followed in order by the Doraegeoji mortise joint specimen and the Tongneoko dovetail joint specimen. The structural performance of a building varies with the characteristics by the shouldering forms of penetrating beams and with the joint types within the columns. This should be considered for the new construction or restoration of multi-story buildings, and be continuously researched henceforth.
The purpose of this study is to analogize the appearance of Korean Ancient Architecture in view of the Stone Remains from 3 Kingdom Period to Unificated Shilla Period. But in these period, there is no building remains but some stupas and fine arts. Especially, there are many architectural appearance and revealing signature in these Historical Stone remains. Architectural elements which are analogized by stone remains what has value as historical materials by preservation of original form from 3 Kingdom Preiod to Unificated Shilla Period are as follows : 1) Platform, the representative characteristic of Korean traditional architecture, was frame structure and accumulate structure. And circular or square footing stood a same shape column on it is put on the platform. 2) In the case of column, there used entasis column and inclined column and circular chamfer technique was applied on the top side of it. Upper side of column, capital and head pentrating tie that small bearing block was put on the center of it was joined. And longitu야nal rest(長舌) supported a cross beam. Capital and small bearing block had no bottom heel, and heel side was curved and straight. Centered bracket structure was often used, and multi bracket structure is not used yet. Inward incline technique was used. 3) Inward opening pair door which had lintel, threshold, doorjamb was usually used, Fixing stone was used for structural safety, and circular handle and lock was used for decoration. Handrail was used on the edge of wooden floor for decorative effect and safety. 4) Square rafter and circular rafter were used in the same period and so did flying rafter. Double eaves and single eave were used in the same period but, single eave was usually used. In this period, square rafter was usually used. This would be studied more by comparing with Japanese wooden architecture. 5) Hipped roof was used and half-hipped roof was not used yet. In front of th hip, there are small sculpture called Jap-Sang(雜像), and windbell was hang on the end of the hip rafter. Concave roof tile, convex roof tile, round eaver tile, decorative tile at end of roof ridge were used. Lotus style was well used on the face of roof tile for decoration. From the results of this study, wooden architecture of Unificated Shilla period was simple compare to Koryo dynasty and Chosun dynasty but, it had some brilliant character. It was hard work that analogized the form of non-existent wood architecture of Ancient Korean period by restricted stone remains. But, in addition to the results of this study and research of old documentations, more study should be go on.
For the purpose of effective utilization of domestic second-grown larch as structural members, post and beam construction applying traditional construction to Japanese larch glulam members was adopted with processing by machine pre-cut method. In general, horizontal shear test by KS F 2154 is conducted to assess the horizontal shear properties of the wooden structure by post and beam construction. The frame was consisted of post and beam member with appropriate fasteners, and members have their own processed parts (notch, hole, etc.) that can be well-connected each other. The shear wall was consisted of the frame with screw-nail sheathed panel (OSB). The results of horizontal shear loading tests without vertical loads conducted on the frame and the shear wall structures, the maximum strengths were about 1.9 kN/m and about 9.7 kN/m, the shear rigidities were about 167 kN/rad, 8198 kN/rad, respectively. The strength proportion of the frame specimen was about 20% of the wall's and about 2% in initial stiffness. Nail failures are remarkable on the shear wall specimen with punching shears and shear failures. The shear load factor for the shear wall specimen by the method of Architectural Institute of Japan was 1.5, which was obtained by the bi-linear method. Loading method should be considered to obtain smooth load-deformation relationship. For the better shear performance of the structures, column base and post and beam connections and sheathed panel should be further examined as well.

Although timber structures have been extensively used in underground temporary supporting system, their actual performance is poorly understood, resulting in potentially conservative and over-engineered design. In this paper, a novel wireless sensor technology, SmartPlank, is introduced to monitor the field performance of timber structures during underground construction. It consists of a wooden beam equipped with a streamlined wireless sensor node, two thin foil strain gauges and two temperature sensors, which enables to measure the strain and temperature at two sides of the beam, and to transmit this information in real-time over an IPv6 (6LowPan) multi-hop wireless mesh network and Internet. Four SmartPlanks were deployed at the London Underground's Tottenham Court Road (TCR) station redevelopment site during the Stair 14 excavation, together with seven relay nodes and a gateway. The monitoring started from August 2013, and will last for one and a half years until the Central Line possession in 2015. This paper reports both the short-term and long-term performances of the monitored timber structures. The grouting effect on the short-term performance of timber structures is highlighted; the grout injection process creates a large downward pressure on the top surface of the SmartPlank. The short and long term earth pressures applied to the monitored structures are estimated from the measured strains, and the estimated values are compared to the design loads.

This study is aimed to look into the craftsmanship non-educated constructors in Korean-style secondary stations(Gong-So) of Naepo region which is located in the northwestern Chungcheongnam-do. Although the area was persecuted as one of three cradles of Korean Catholicism, Catholic activities flourished there. The 13 cases of Korean-style secondary stations were selected through a survey report list about modern cultural assets of Chungcheongnam-do published in december 2004. This study examined the methods of plan layout and framework of Gong-So to look into craftsmanship of non-educated constructors, the results are as follows; The methods of plan layout are divided into three types according to existence and arrangement of inner column(Nae-Ju); 'Layout with Nae-Ju' is considered as the primary form of Korean-style Gong-So with using regular Nae-Ju. 'Layout with the different position of the center between Nae-Ju and exterior column(Oe-Ju)' and 'layout without Nae-Ju' is appeared in Korean-style Gong-So which is important to assembly and alter function. The methods of framework are appeared variously according to different plan layout for securing worship space. The unusal beam(Chung-Ryang) is used to solve different spans of altar and narthex. When space was formed widely without Nae-Ju, diagonal members and M letter type rafters are used, they are influenced by the technique of western wooden roof truss.

In Korea, there has been a traditional post and beam wood construction with large roof load. Because a large friction is generated in wooden joint or members, it is important to evaluate the friction between wood members according to wood direction. Because most of studies have been concerned with friction between wood and steel, excluding effect of real area of contact, there are a few studies on the friction between wood members. The object of this study was to evaluate friction or coefficient of friction according to normal force and real area of contact of wood. With Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) test specimens, five steps of normal force and combinations of test were prepared. Results indicated that normal force had almost no affection on the friction, however there was difference about friction or coefficient of friction according to real contact conditions of wood grain and contact area.
