  • The 2020 National Building Code of Canada (NBC) and the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) both include Tall Wood Buildings (TWB) and are hailed as documents responsible for the proliferation of Mass Timber construction. Mass Timber construction is critical to reducing the carbon footprint of the construction industry; a sector acknowledged as being one of the greatest contributors of global annual CO2 emissions. Origine, a 13-storey multi-residential building erected in 2017 in a previously unsuitable site, is currently the tallest all-wood building in North America. This article describes the challenges overcome by the designers and client as they engaged with code officials, building authorities, and fire-service representatives to demonstrate the life-safety performance of this innovative building. It also traces the development of the "Guide for Mass Timber Buildings of up to 12 Storeys" published in Quebec and how it has enabled other significant Tall Wood projects across North America.

  • Recently, as the alternatives to preserve environment such as effective usage of wastes or unusable resources are drawing attentions, researches and measures for the two tasks, which are reuse of waste wood and development of eco-friendly materials, are being examined and established in various fields. However, they are still insufficient. Therefore, in this study, for the efficient application of waste woods and eco-friendly effects, mortar was produced using sawdust as the waste wood and mineral material cement for combination, in order to produce inorganic boards using waste woods. which were made when sawing. This study attempted to suggest a basic material about the physical properties of mortar, which used waste woods, after examining the features of wood mixture rate, water-cement rate, consolation according to the mixture rate of the setting accelerator, specific gravity, compression intensity, and bending intensity as experiment factors.

  • Sound absorption coefficients of oak (Quercus mongolica) wood and oak mushroom bed log were measured by the two microphone transfer function method and anatomical features of oak mushroom bed log examined by stereo scope and SEM observations. The sound absorption coefficients of oak mushroom bed log seemed to be higher than those of normal oak wood specimen over all estimated frequency range. Especially, in the frequency range of 2 to 6 kHz, they were about 2~3 times higher than those of normal wood specimen. Due to fungi degradation, the specific gravity of oak mushroom bed log decreased about 70% than that of normal wood. For oak mushroom bed log, abundant pores occurred on the radial, tangential and cross sectional surface and it was considered that the pores behaved as a sound absorbing pore.

  • The main purpose of this study is as follows : Finding a solution for fresh wood chips to be used as an alternative growing-media through a study of the formation method of a compost base that is applicable on both construction site and composting factory to ferment fresh wood chips produced from construction site as well as a study on adjuvant or secondary materials. The result from the experiment plot using wood chips sized 50mm or less, manure and fertilizer mixed manure as a source of nitrogen to compost fresh wood chips has shown that the temperatures 9days and 3days after the beginning of the experiment reached to $49.0^{\circ}C$ and $40.4^{\circ}C$ respectively, the heating duration was 7days and 4days respectively, and the C/N ratio was 26.5 and 25.3, each satisfying the standard for composted manure (25.0~40.0). Also, the other result from another experiment plot using mixture of sandy soil and microorganism as an inoculation source of microorganism has shown that the temperature 10days after the beginning of the experiment reached to $67.6^{\circ}C$ and lasted 16days. The experiment plot using sandy soil has shown the highest figure of $5.3{\sim}108$ CFU/g in terms of number of microorganism. The result from the experiment plots for on-site composting of fresh wood chips have shown that the experiment plot that used sandy soil with fertilizer due to supply restriction of manure as a nitrogen source in construction site reached the high temperature of $54.7^{\circ}C$ after 3days of experiment beginning and maintained heating state for 17days and reached 30.6 of C/N ratio, satisfying the standard for composted manure.

  • The purpose of this research was to see thermal and breaking type characteristics of waste wood for construction materials using high temperature and pressure equipment. In TG/DTA graph weight of waste wood was steeply decreased at $250^{\circ}C$, it has to be treated below $250^{\circ}C$ for construction materials. In popping test the needle-leaved tree was more broken in texture than the broad-leaved tree, especially, Chamaecyparis obtusa(W-7) was the best. The optimum result was obtained at temp. $200^{\circ}C$, pressure 3MPa among the experimental condition.

  • The increasing interest in the environment and climate change around the globe, while the importance of building energy saving is increasing. The building energy simulation program is used for evaluating of energy performance of buildings. However, an input value of wood thermal conductivity in the programs is different from each other. Therefore, in this study, wood thermal conductivity was measured according to species. Through construction database by species of wood, the error of simulation program are able be decreased. In addition, if used as a structural and interior of buildings, the thermal conductivity and moisture of the wood is difficult to apply to the program because they were changed according to the occupant's lifestyle. In this paper, thermal conductivity and moisture content.of wood confirmed changes in the constant temperature and relative humidity ($25^{\circ}C$, 50% R.H.) condition.

  • This study was carried out in order to compare nail shear strength between domestic plywood and imported OSB for structural sheathing members as infill wall of wooden construction. The differences of nail shear strength between parallel-to-grain direction and perpendicular-to-grain direction of sheathing material to frame material were distinct at the plywood composition. The shear strengths of plywood and OSB with nail met current design values. The plywood of P-4 type, which uses MLH at surface layer and constructs 7 ply, showed greater than OSB regardless of grain direction of sheathing material to frame material. When the plywood as sheathing material to frame material was used, it was found out that the overall construction of perpendicular-to-grain direction of plywood had greater nail shear strengths than the construction of parallel-to-grain.

  • People enjoy more leisure time these days as the government introduced the workweek last year and there is a growing interest on living healthy life. Amidst such change in society, trekking in forest has gained popularity along more people spending leisure time by walking for health. As a result, there are many scenic trails being built using wood deck. Usually certain parts of trails are built with wood deck where the path maybe too dangerous for walking or where nature needs to be protected. However wood material used for deck is easily prone to defects which can lead to safety issues. This study aims to understand the differences by materials used for wood deck and to investigate a link between different materials used and causes for defect occurrence. And further, the study aims to identify materials and construction methods for high workability and safety. The study was able to conclude that different materials used and different construction methods of applied for wood deck yield different results in terms of workability and defect occurrence.
