  • The packet loss and the disconnection during handoff are the most critical problems which degrade the video quality in wireless video streaming. To cope with these problems, we propose an efficient video streaming method in this paper, which does not only dynamically adjust the video transmission rate based on the raptor forward error correction (FEC) level, but also minimize the error propagation during handoff. Firstly, the channel bandwidth of the wireless broadband internet, called WiBro, is estimated by analyzing channel parameters including the carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) and the handoff. Secondly, the streaming server adjusts the next transmission rate according to the estimated channel bandwidth and the raptor FEC level to avoid packet error. Also, the encoder performs the intra refresh method that inserts an intra frame (I-frame) right after handoff to reduce the error propagation effectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can improve the performance of the video streaming over WiBro network.

  • UHD content is characterized by higher bandwidth requirements to provide seamless playback. The existing HTTP adaptive streaming scheme periodically requests video segment of lower quality than the available bandwidth in the steady state. In the steady state, the On-Off pattern is repeated due to the difference of the available bandwidth and the encoding rate of the content. And the repeated Off interval is causing the problem that can not efficiently use the available bandwidth. In the wireless environment where the delay and loss rate are higher with large bandwidth fluctuations, this problem is exacerbated because the available bandwidth is estimated inaccurately. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a segment scheduling scheme for efficient bandwidth utilization of UHD contents streaming in wireless environment. Proposed scheme is a group segment that simultaneously reqeusts multiple segments in one request message in order to reduce frequency of OFF interval. Through simulation, Our scheme improves bandwidth utilization.

  • Video streaming over wireless multi-hop networks(WMNs) contains the following challenges from channel fading and variable bandwidth of wireless channel, and it cause degradation of video streaming performance. To overcome the challenges, currently, WMNs can use Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanism. In WMNs, traditional FEC schemes, E2E-FEC and HbH-FEC, for video streaming are applied, but it has long transmission delay, high computational complexity and inefficient usage of resource. Also, to distinguish network status in streaming path, it has limitation. In this paper, we propose monitoring-based coordination of network-adaptive hop-to-end(H2E) FEC scheme. To enable proposed scheme, we apply a centralized coordinator. The coordinator has observing overall monitoring information and coordinating H2E-FEC mechanism. Main points of H2E-FEC is distinguishing operation range as well as selecting FEC starting node and redundancy from monitored results in coordination. To verify the proposed scheme, we perform extensive experiment over the OMF(Orbit Measurement Framework) and IEEE 802.1la-based multi-hop WMN testbed, and we carry out performance improvement, 17%, from performance comparison by existing FEC scheme.

  • Variable wireless channel is a big challenge for real-time video applications, and the rate adaptation of realtime video streaming becomes a hot topic. Intra-video coding is important for high-quality video communication and industrial video applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel adaptive scheme for real-time video transmission with intra-only coding over a wireless network. The key idea of this scheme is to estimate the instantaneous remaining capacity of the network to adjust the quality of the next several video frames, which not only can keep low queuing delay and ensure video quality, but also can respond to bandwidth changes quickly. We compare our scheme with three different schemes in the video transmission system. The experimental results show that our scheme has higher bandwidth utilization and faster bandwidth change response, while maintaining low queuing delay.

  • With the fast development of information and communication technologies, video streaming services and applications are increasing rapidly. However, the network condition is volatile. In order to provide users with better quality of service, it is necessary to develop an accurate and low-complexity model for Quality of Experience (QoE) prediction of time-varying video. Memory effects refer to the psychological influence factor of historical experience, which can be taken into account to improve the accuracy of QoE evaluation. In this paper, we design subjective experiments to explore the impact of Short-Term Memory (STM) on QoE. The experimental results show that the user's real-time QoE is influenced by the duration of previous viewing experience and the expectations generated by STM. Furthermore, we propose analytical models to determine the relationship between intrinsic video quality, expectation and real-time QoE. The proposed models have better performance for real-time QoE prediction when the video is transmitted in a fluctuate network. The models are capable of providing more accurate guidance for improving the quality of video streaming services.

  • With growing applications of wireless video streaming, an efficient video traffic model featuring modern high-compression techniques is more desirable than ever, because the wireless channel bandwidths are ever limited and time-varying. We propose a modeling and analysis method for video traffic by a class of stochastic processes, which we call '$GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input processes'. We model video traffic by $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process with gamma-distributed batch sizes Y and Weibull-like autocorrelation function. Using four real-encoded, full-length video traces including action movies, a drama, and an animation, we evaluate our modeling performance against existing model, transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ input process, which is one of most recently proposed video modeling methods in the literature. Our proposed $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ model is observed to consistently provide conservative performance predictions, in terms of packet loss ratio, within acceptable error at various traffic loads of interest in practical multimedia streaming systems, while the existing transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ fails. For real-time implementation of our model, we analyze G/D/1/K queueing systems with $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process to upper estimate the packet loss probabilities.

  • Free-viewpoint video (FVV) is a synthesization technology that generates a virtual viewpoint video using multiple videos recorded via wireless devices at heterogeneous locations. In order to introduce a new service that grafts the FVV onto the real-time streaming service using wireless devices, we need to overcome several constraints. Two main factors of those constraints are the limited wireless capacity that are shared fairly by multiple devices, and the transmission time constraint with which live streaming services have to comply. Therefore, for optimal quality of entire videos, a set of transmitting devices should be effectively selected depending on the condition of wireless channel and the required video popularity of specific viewpoint requested from users. For optimal selection, this study proposes a heuristic algorithm that takes into account the aforementioned factors from possible wireless transmission error behaviors and the requested viewpoint popularity. Through analysis and simulation, we show that with this algorithm, quality of most popular viewpoint videos is guaranteed. Furthermore, performance comparison against the existing scheme which is based only on the location of recording devices is made.

  • Due to the development of the communication technology and the high-performance mobile device, the number of video streaming service user has been increasing. Video streaming services in the restricted network environments need error control to support users for the Ultra High Definition(UHD) video delivery. Packet-level FEC method was used to control the error for delay-sensitive video service, but it has a defect in huge occupation of network resources by redundant packets. In this paper, we proposed a packet-level FEC algorithm which maintains the video quality by previous FEC methods and also reduces the occupation of network resource in the restricted network environments. The proposed algorithm controls the redundant rate with using the delivery characteristic of the video coding technology, and improves the efficiency of network resources by reducing the traffic by around 33% in comparison with the previous FEC methods.

  • Recent advancements in broadband wireless communication technologies enable mobile users to receive video streaming services with various smart devices. The long term evolution (LTE) network provides high bandwidth and low latency for several emerging mobile applications. This paper proposes the buffer aware scheduling (BAS) approach to schedule the downlink video traffic in LTE network. The proposed BAS scheme applies the weighting function to heuristically adjust the scheduling priority by considering the buffer status and channel condition of UE so as to reduce the time that UE stays in the connected state without receiving data. Both of 1080P and 2160P resolution video streaming sources were applied for exhaustive simulations to examine the performance of the proposed scheme by comparing to that of the fair bandwidth (FB) and the best channel quality indicator (CQI) schemes. The simulation results indicate that the proposed BAS scheme not only achieves better performance in power saving, streaming delivery time, and throughput than the FB scheme while maintaining the similar performance as the best CQI scheme in light traffic load. Specifically, the proposed scheme reduces streaming delivery time and generates less signaling overhead than the best CQI scheme when the traffic load is heavy.
