Structural control technologies have attracted great interest from the earthquake engineering community over the last few decades as an effective method of reducing undesired structural responses. Traditional structural control systems employ large quantities of cables to connect structural sensors, actuators, and controllers into one integrated system. To reduce the high-costs associated with labor-intensive installations, wireless communication can serve as an alternative real-time communication link between the nodes of a control system. A prototype wireless structural sensing and control system has been physically implemented and its performance verified in large-scale shake table tests. This paper introduces the design of this prototype system and investigates the feasibility of employing decentralized and partially decentralized control strategies to mitigate the challenge of communication latencies associated with wireless sensor networks. Closed-loop feedback control algorithms are embedded within the wireless sensor prototypes allowing them to serve as controllers in the control system. To validate the embedment of control algorithms, a 3-story half-scale steel structure is employed with magnetorheological (MR) dampers installed on each floor. Both numerical simulation and experimental results show that decentralized control solutions can be very effective in attaining the optimal performance of the wireless control system.
Considerable achievements in developing structural regulators as an important method for vibration control have been made over the last few decades. The use of large quantities of cables in traditional wired control systems to connect sensors, controllers, and actuators makes the structural regulators complicated and expensive. A wireless decentralized control experimental platform based on Wi-Fi unit is designed and implemented in this study. Centralized and decentralized control strategies as sample controllers are employed in this control system. An optimal control algorithm based on Kalman estimator is embedded in the dSPACE controller and the DSP controller. To examine the performance of this control scheme, a three-story steel structure is developed with active mass dampers installed on each floor as the wireless communication platform. Experimental results show that the wireless decentralized control exhibits good control performance and has various potential applications in industrial control systems. The proposed experimental system may become a benchmark platform for the validation of the corresponding wireless control algorithm.
Decentralized Dynamic Surface Control(DDSC) for a class of nonlinear system interconnected via sensor network is presented in this paper. While a centralized design approach of DSC was developed in [1], the decentralized approach to deal with complex large-scale systems is proposed under the assumption that interconnected functions among subsystems are known via sensor network. As shown in [2], the separation principle for DDSC will allow us to design an estimation filter independently. Furthermore, the theoretical results are used to design and simulate an active vibration isolator under the assumption that many embedded sensors are distributed and communicate each other via wireless communication.
This study introduces a novel approach for locating damage in a structure using wireless sensor system with local level computational capability to alleviate data traffic load on the centralized computation. Smart wireless sensor systems, capable of iterative damage-searching, mimic an optimization process in a decentralized way. The proposed algorithm tries to detect damage in a structure by monitoring abnormal increases in strain measurements from a group of wireless sensors. Initially, this clustering technique provides a reasonably effective sensor placement within a structure. Sensor clustering also assigns a certain number of master sensors in each cluster so that they can constantly monitor the structural health of a structure. By adopting a voting system, a group of wireless sensors iteratively forages for a damage location as they can be activated as needed. Since all of the damage searching process occurs within a small group of wireless sensors, no global control or data traffic to a central system is required. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the newly developed searching algorithm implemented on wireless sensors successfully localizes stiffness damage in a plate through the local level reconfigurable function of smart sensors.
The smart space is composed of the wire and/or wireless network, multi-sensor-based environment, and many various controllers. For the smart space, this paper presents a new design method of multirate digital decentralized controller using the intelligent digital redesign technique. In specific, the proposed method is based on the delta-operator and the multirate sampling and takes the form of the LMIs. To shows the feasibility of the suggested method, the computer simulations for Heating, ventilating, and ai. conditioning (HVAC) system are provided.
This paper proposes an ant-based routing algorithm, Ant System-Routing in wireless Senor Networks(AS-RSN), for wireless sensor networks. Using a transition rule in Ant System, sensors can spread data traffic over the whole network to achieve energy balance, and consequently, maximize the lifetime of sensor networks. The transition rule advances one of the original Ant System by re-defining link cost which is a metric devised to consider energy-sufficiency as well as energy-efficiency. This metric gives rise to the design of the AS-RSN algorithm devised to balance the data traffic of sensor networks in a decentralized manner and consequently prolong the lifetime of the networks. Therefore, AS-RSN is scalable in the number of sensors and also robust to the variations in the dynamics of event generation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing three existing routing algorithms: Direct Communication Approach, Minimum Transmission Energy, and Self-Organized Routing and find that energy balance should be considered to extend lifetime of sensor network and increase robustness of sensor network for diverse event generation patterns.

For energy-efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), when a sensor node detects events, the sensing period for collecting the detailed information is likely to be short. The lifetime of WSNs decreases because communication modules are used excessively on a specific sensor node. To solve this problem, the TARP decentralized network packets to neighbor nodes. It considered the average data transmission rate as well as the data distribution. However, since the existing scheme did not consider the energy consumption of a node in WSNs, its network lifetime is reduced. In this paper, we propose an energy awareness congestion control scheme based on genetic algorithms in WSNs. The proposed scheme considers the remaining amount of energy and the transmission rate on a single node in fitness evaluation. Since the proposed scheme performs an efficient congestion control, it extends the network lifetime. In order to show the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing scheme through performance evaluation. It is shown that the proposed scheme enhances the data fairness and improves the network lifetime by about 27% on average over the existing scheme.
