Wind is a significant and valuable renewable energy resource. It is safe and abundant and can make an important contribution to future clean, sustainable and diversified electricity supplies. Unlike other sources of energy, wind does not pollute the atmosphere nor create any hazardous waste. In some countries wind energy is already competitive with fossil and nuclear power even without accounting for the environmental benefits of wind power. The cost of electricity from conventional power stations does not usually take full account of its environmental impact (acid rain, oil slick clean up, the effects of climate change, etc). In this paper, a transient phenomenon simulation method for Wind Power Generation System(WPGS) under real weather conditions has been proposed. The simulation method is expected to be able to analyze easily under various conditions with considering the sort of wind turbine, the capacity of system and the converter system. Wind turbine connected to the synchronous generator and power converter was simulated.

Idealized PID-controlled rotor-speed error for blade pitch control of wind turbines responds as a second-order system with natural frequency and damping ratio for closed-loop system. RISO National Laboratory has recommended specific natural frequency(=0.6 rad/s) and damping ratio(=0.7) for 2 MW wind turbine. The baseline controller for 5 MW wind turbine of NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) is designed based on the same values of RISO recommendation. This study investigates the effect of the natural frequency and damping ratio of the controller for NREL 5 MW wind turbine. It is confirmed that RISO recommendation shall be tuned for each wind turbine.
To provide the data necessary to determine the design wind speed for calculating the wind load acting on a greenhouse, we measured the wind speed below 10m height and analyzed the power law exponents at Buan and Gunwi. A wind speed greater than $5m{\cdot}s^{-1}$ is appropriate for calculating the power law exponent necessary to determine the wind speed distribution function according to height. We observed that the wind speed increased according to a power law function with increased height at Buan, showing a similar trend to the RDC and JGHA standards. Therefore, this result should be applied when determining the power law function for calculating the design wind speed of the greenhouse structure. The ordinary trend is that if terrain roughness increases the value of power law exponent also increases, but in the case of Gunwi the value of power law exponent was 0.06, which shows contrary value than that of the ordinary trend. This contrary trend was due to the elevations difference of 2m between tower installed and surrounding area, which cause contraction in streamline. The power law exponent started to decrease at 7 am, stopped decreasing and started to increase at 3 pm, and stopped increasing and remained constant at 12 pm at Buan. These changes correspond to the general change trends of the power law exponent. The calculated value of the shape parameter for Buan was 1.51, confirming that the wind characteristics at Buan, a reclaimed area near the coast, were similar to those of coastal areas in Jeju.
30kW electrical power conversion system is delveloped for the variable speed wind turbine system. In the wind energy conversion system(WECS) a synchronous generator with field current excitation converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the voltage and frequency of generator output vary according to the wind speed, a dc/dc boosting chopper is utilized to maintain constant dc link voltage. Grid connection type PWM inverter supply currents into the utility line by regulating the dc link voltage. The active power is controlled by q-axis current which the reactive power can be controlled by d-axis current reference change. The phase angle of utility voltage is detected using s/w PLL(Phased Locked Loop) in d-q synchronous reference frame. This scheme gives a low cost power solution for variable speed WECS.

This paper presents an active and reactive power compensator for the wind power system with squirrel-cage induction generator. The output power of a wind power system changes irregularly according to the variation of wind speed. The developed system is able to continuously compensate the active and reactive power. The 3-phase inverter operates for the compensation of reactive power, while the DC/DC converter with super-capacitors operates for the compensation of active power. The operational feasibility of the proposed model was verified by simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and the feasibility of hardware implementation was confirmed by experimental works with a scaled hardware model. The proposed compensator can be expected that developed system may be used to compensated the abrupt power variation due to sudden change of wind speed or sudden power-drop by tower effect. It can be also applied for the distributed generation and the Micro-Grid.
In the numerical weather model, surface properties can be defined by various parameters such as terrain height, landuse, surface albedo, soil moisture, surface emissivity, roughness length and so on. And these parameters need to be improved in the Seoul metropolitan area that established high-rise and complex buildings by urbanization at a recent time. The surface roughness length map is developed from digital elevation model (DEM) and it is implemented to the high-resolution numerical weather (WISE-WRF) model. Simulated results from WISE-WRF model are analyzed the relationship between meteorological variables to changes in the surface roughness length. Friction speed and wind speed are improved with various surface roughness in urban, these variables affected to temperature and relative humidity and hence the surface roughness length will affect to the precipitation and Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) height. When surface variables by the WISE-WRF model are validated with Automatic Weather System (AWS) observations, NEW experiment is able to simulate more accurate than ORG experiment in temperature and wind speed. Especially, wind speed is overestimated over $2.5m\;s^{-1}$ on some AWS stations in Seoul and surrounding area but it improved with positive correlation and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) below $2.5m\;s^{-1}$ in whole area. There are close relationship between surface roughness length and wind speed, and the change of surface variables lead to the change of location and duration of precipitation. As a result, the accuracy of WISE-WRF model is improved with the new surface roughness length retrieved from DEM, and its surface roughness length is important role in the high-resolution WISE-WRF model. By the way, the result in this study need various validation from retrieved the surface roughness length to numerical weather model simulations with observation data.

Recently, because a renewable power source must operate as a constant rate in accordance with RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard), the study of the renewable power sources has been ongoing. Especially because of noise of wind turbine, troubleshooting, and urban greening business, research related with small wind turbine are underway. The economics and reliability are important parts for the activation of small wind turbine, such as solar energy. In this paper, by analyzing the temperature variations for each location and efficiency of power conversion devices in accordance with short period wind speed changes in simulation test, we reviewed the safety about temperature variations of wind generator and the method of selection of power converter.
The wind is very important factor in forest fire spread. Flame spread has a change through wind pattern change in forest fire. In order to analyze the forest fire flame spread rate, change of flame tilt depending on wind may be considering first. This is be cause the flame spread rate varies by the flame tilt changed due to transfer of heat. Especially, as wind speed grow, flame gets closer to surface, heat transfer ratio increase, virgin fuel bed reaches ignition temperature more rapidly, and flame moves faster. This study deduces, through experiment and physical figure analysis, relations on the change behavior of flame tilt due to wind. The value of flame tilt angle calculated from the equation and the experiment value showed average error angle of $3.3^{\circ}$, which is relatively smaller than results of previous studies that used other coefficient. Froude number coefficient A can be calculated in the method provided in this research for estimation of flame tilt angle of virgin fuel bed with varying thermal properties. The research finding is expected to be applied to future studies on flame spread through numerical analysis of heat transfer.

Measured acoustic signal from operating high speed train contains frequency change called doppler shift due to its motion. To avoid this doppler shift wind tunnel test is required. But scaledown of model can cause change of source characteristics. And measurements using some part of train cannot reproduce real flow condition. The best way to recognize real noise source characteristics is measurement from operating high speed train but doppler shift makes it hard. So, we developed simple dedopplerization technique for one microphone and applied to field test data of high speed train. Through this, we could capture real frequency of noise from operating high speed train.
When constructing a high-speed railroad, the reduction of the distance between track centers and the width of track bed will save the construction cost. However the shortening the distance between track centers may cause the stability problems due to higher wind pressure. Therefore the extensive technical review and aerodynamical study should be performed to determine the adequate distance between track centers. In this study, the impact that the increase in wind pressure due to the change of aerodynamic phenomena with the change of the distance between track centers may have on two trains passing by each other was predicted, and the stability of train operation was analyzed in order to review the distance between track centers suitable to Honam HSR trains. And we estimated the aerodynamical effects by the results of the field test.
