  • Recently, new dispersed sources (DSG) such as Photovoltaic, Wind Power, fuel cell etc. are interconnected with distribution systems as national projects for alternative energy preparing for oil crisis. This paper deals with the optimal evaluation algorithms in the case where new dispersed sources are operated in distribution systems. It is very difficult and complicated to handle the interconnection issues for proper voltage managements, because professional skills and enormous amounts of data for the evaluations are required. The typical evaluation algorithms mainly depending on individual ability and quality of data acquired, inevitably cause the different results f3r the same issue, so unfair and subjective evaluations are unavoidable. In order to overcome these problems, this paper proposes reasonable and general algorithms based on the standard model system and proper criterion, which offers the fair and objective evaluations in any case.

  • Recently, new dispersed generation systems such as photovoltaic, wind power, fuel cell etc. are energetically interconnected and operated in the distribution systems, as one of the national projects for alternative energy with the provision against oil crisis. The technical guidelines on the interconnection of dispersed generation systems have been established and conducted positively. However, protection devices (Re-closer) in primary feeder of distribution system interconnected with photovoltaic generation may cause problems with mis-operation, and then many customers could have problems like an interruption. So, this paper presents the optimal method to minimize the impact of interruption, using both the symmetric method and MATLAB/SIMULINK. And, also this paper shows the effectiveness of proposed method by simulating at the real distribution systems.

  • Recently, the large scaled lead-acid battery is widely introduced to efficient operation of the photovoltaic system in many islands. but the demand of lithium-ion battery is getting increased by the operation of wind power and replacement of the lead-acid battery. And also, under the renewable portfolio standard(RPS) and energy efficiency resource standard(EERS) policy of Korea government, the introduction of energy storage system(ESS) has been actively increased. Therefore, this paper presents the operation algorithm of hybrid battery management system(BMS) using the lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, in order to maximize advantage of each battery. In other words, this paper proposed the algorithm of state of charge(SOC) and hybrid operation algorithm to calculate the optimal composition rate considering the fixed cost and operation cost of each battery. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithms are an effective tool to evaluate SOC and to optimally operate hybrid ESS.

  • The Airship PKNU is a roughly 12 m (32 ft) long blimp, filled with helium, whose two-gasoline power(3hp per engine) are independently radio controlled. The motors and propellers can be tilted and are attached to the gondola through an axle and supporting braces. Four stabilizing fins are mounted at the tail of the airship. To fill in the helium, a valve is placed at the bottom of the hull. The inaugural flight was on jul. 31.2002 at the Pusan, S.korea Most environment monitoring system\ problem use satellite image. But, Low resolution satellite image (multi-spectral) : 1km ∼ 250 m ground resolutions is lows. So, detail information acquisition is hard at the complex terrain. High resolution satellite image (black and white) 30m : The ground resolution is high. But it is high price, visit cycle and delivery time is long So. We want make high accuracy airship photogrammetry system. This airship can catch picture Multi. spectral Aerial photographing (visible, Near infrared and thermal infrared), and High resolution (over 6million pixel). It can take atmosphere datum (Temperature (wet bulb, dew point, general), Pressure (static, dynamic), Humidity, wind speed). this airship is very Quickness that aircraft install time is lower than 30 minutes, it is compact and that conveyance is easy. • CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage - Gas Turbine) power generation is a likely option for the buffer facility stabilizing the fluctuation of the renewable powers, such as wind and solar powers. Considering the geological conditions, the underground CAES facility is most probable if the CAES-G/T generation is planed in Korea. In this kind of facility, a concrete plug is installed to seal the compressed air in the container, so that the selection of the shape and dimension of concrete plug could be a critical design factor. The stability evaluation of two types of plug was carried out by investigating the distribution of the factor of safety in the plugs and the distribution of contact pressure over the contact surface. The analysis result shows that the taper-shaped plug is more structurally stable than the wedge-shaped plug for the given geological condition. Possible separation of the rock-concrete interface around the spring line of the wedge-shaped plug is anticipated, which means the possible leakage of compressed air through the side wall and also means the poor mobilization of frictional resistance on that area.

  • Korea Earthquake Monitoring System(KEMS) in the Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) as detected more than 1000 events since the end of 1998. But not all events are interpreted as earthquakes because many events are concentrated on daytime. It strongly implies that in addition to earthquake these events include artificial effects such as industrial blasting. Before the determination of eathquake charactertistics in the korean peninsula it is necessary to discriminate the detected events as earthquakes or artificial events. For the discriminant study KIGAM and SMU(Southern Methodist University) installed a triangular four-element 1-km aperture seismo-acoustic array at Chul-Won area northeast of Seoul Korea. Each array element includes a GS-13 seismometer in the bottom of borehole and a Validyne DP250-14 microbarometer sensor mounted inside of the borehole 1,2 meter deep connected to a 11 arm radial array of 10m porous soaker hoses. This array introduce the use of 2.4-GHz radios for inter-array self-contained solar-charged power system and GPS time-keeping system. A 24-bit digital data acquisition system performs 40 SPS in the infrasound and seismometer data. Velocity and direction of wind and temperature are also measured at hub site and included to the data stresam. This seismo-acoustic array will be used to identify and locate associated with industrial blasting and these identified and located events will be applied to form a ground truth database useful to assist the other development of discriminant studies.

  • Divinycell, which functions as both insulation and a supporting structure, is generally applied in the NO96-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) insulation system. Polymer-material-based Divinycell, which has a high strength and low weight, has been widely used in the offshore, transportation, wind power generation, and civil engineering fields. In particular, this type of material receives attention as an insulation material because its thermal conductivity can be lowered depending on the ambient temperature. However, it is difficult to obtain research results for Divinycell, even though the component materials of the NO96-type LNG cargo containment system, such as 36% nickel steel (invar steel), plywood, perlite, and glass wool, have been extensively studied and reported. In the present study, temperature and strain-rate dependent compressive tests on Divinycell were performed. Both the quantitative experimental data and elastic recovery are discussed. Finally, the mechanical characteristics of Divinycell were compared to the results of polyurethane foam insulation material.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure using wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs) has received significant public attention in recent years. The benefits of WSSNs are that they are low-cost, easy to install, and provide effective data management via on-board computation. This paper reports on the deployment and evaluation of a state-of-the-art WSSN on the new Jindo Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in South Korea with a 344-m main span and two 70-m side spans. The central components of the WSSN deployment are the Imote2 smart sensor platforms, a custom-designed multimetric sensor boards, base stations, and software provided by the Illinois Structural Health Monitoring Project (ISHMP) Services Toolsuite. In total, 70 sensor nodes and two base stations have been deployed to monitor the bridge using an autonomous SHM application with excessive wind and vibration triggering the system to initiate monitoring. Additionally, the performance of the system is evaluated in terms of hardware durability, software stability, power consumption and energy harvesting capabilities. The Jindo Bridge SHM system constitutes the largest deployment of wireless smart sensors for civil infrastructure monitoring to date. This deployment demonstrates the strong potential of WSSNs for monitoring of large scale civil infrastructure.
