  • Protozoa of the genus Eimeria are the etiologic agents of avian coccidiosis, the most economically important Parasitic disease for the poultry industry. Coccidia multiply in intestinal epithelial cells of a wide range of hosts, including livestock in addition to poultry. Chemotherapy is extensively used to control coccidiosis. However, development of drug resistance by Eimeria parasites, the intensive cost and labor involved in the identification of new anticoccidial compounds and public awareness of drug residues in foods warrant alternative methods to prevent coccidiocic in the fast growing poultry industry. For these reasons, there is a great interest in developing vaccines against avian coccidiosis. Live Eimeria vaccines confer protective immunity, however a significant disadvantage of using these types of vaccines is their pathogenicity. Live parasites with attenuated pathogenicity also usually produce immunity but may revert back to a pathogenic form and may be contaminated with other pathogenic organisms. Killed Eimeria vaccines are safer but, unlike live attenuated vaccines, are not able to generate cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses. Recombinant vaccines are biochemically purified proteins produced by genetic engineering that consist of particular epitopes or metabolites of Eimeria. Unlike live attenuated organisms, recombinant vaccines do not possess as much risk and generally are able to induce both humoral and cell mediated immunity. DNA vaccines consist of genes encoding immunogenic proteins of pathogens that are directly administered into the host in a manner that the gene is expressed and the resulting protein generates a protective immune response. Although all of these different types of vaccines have been applied to coccidiosis, this disease continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality in the poultry industry. Future development of an effective vaccine against coccidiosis will depend on further investigation of protective immunity to Eimeria infection and identification of important immundgenic parasite molecules.

  • To catch live anchovies which will be used as bait for skipjack fishing, set net, lift net and purse seine net were tried in Korean coastal waters by the authors. Among them the former two methods showed unsuitable to catch in bulk even though the catch showed good survival. The last showed unsuitable result because of the lack of exclusive fishing boat and skilled fishermen. From the viewpoint of practical use, the authors regarded it may be suitable to improve the traditional boat seine net which are used as major fishing gear to catch anchovies in Korea, so far as Korea is concerned. So we tried to catch live anchovies with partially reconstructed boat seine net and to hold the catch in the creel improved by the authors. Even though the result showed less than 70 percent of survival, slightly worse than other fishing methods, the experimented method showed to be practical in catching the live anchovies intensively.

  • One of the biggest environmental issues that our world has been facing is climate change. In order to cope with such environmental issues, the world is putting a great deal of effort into energy conservation. The building sector, in particular, consumes 36% of the energy consumed worldwide and emits considerable amount of greenhouse gases. Therefore, introduction of renewable energies in the building sector is highly recommended. Renewable energy sources that can be utilized in the building sector include sunlight, solar heat, geothermal heat, fuel cells and wind power. The wind power generation system which converts wind energy into electrical energy has advantages in that wind is an unlimited and pollution-free resource. It is suitable to be connected to existing buildings because many years of operational experience and the enhanced stability of the system have made it possible to downsize the electrical generator. In case of existing buildings, it is necessary to consider the live loads of the buildings to connect the wind power generation system. This paper, through the connection of the wind power generation with existing buildings, promotes reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy independence by reducing energy consumption in the building sector. In order to connect the wind power generation system with an exciting building, the live load of the building and the area of the rooftop should be considered. The installable model is selected by comparing the live load of the building and the load of the wind power generation system. The maximum number of the wind turbines that can be installed is obtained by considering the separation distance between the wind turbines within the area of the rooftop. Installations are divided into single installations and multiple installations of two different types of wind turbines. After determining the maximum installable number, the optimal model that can achieve the maximum annual power generation will be selected by comparing the respective total annual amount of the power generation of different models.

  • Periodic outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) caused by velogenic viscerotropic ND virus (vvNDV) has become a major concern in Korea nowadays. Throughout last epidemic, the winter season in 2000, most chicken flocks infected early, under 2-4 weeks of age, showed high mortality up to 50-100%. Serum samples collected from 201 breeder, 284 layer and 112 broiler chicken flocks were examined to evaluate the efficacy of various vaccination methods and programs routinely used for mass vaccination in the field poultry farms. Despite repeated live vaccination, most poultry flocks vaccinated by drinking water route using nipple water supply system failed to produce solid active immune response to NDV during the growing time. In the present study, we applied the spray vaccination technique using Ulvavac or Desvac sprayer to the experimental poultry flocks and examined the efficacy of live vaccination effects induced by it under field condition. Measurable antibody to NDV as well as early protection against vvNDV challenge were found in poultry flocks vaccinated by spray route. Further, we did not found significant post vaccination reactions caused by spray vaccination if properly administered. These data indicate that the spray vaccination will be safe and reliable mass vaccination method for the prevention of ND.

  • The silkworm performs sexual reproduction for the production of its healthy offsprings from generations to generations. Parthenogenesis in the silkworm, Bombyx mori acquires immense use in the development of outstanding homozygouse lines with higher viability, hybrid vigour, combining ability and less phenotypic variability, and it can serve as a powerful tool in controlling sex of the offsprings as well as a useful tool in selection of breeding schemes. However, naturally occuring parthenogenesis in silkworm could not be found so far. Fortunately, artificial induction of parthenogenesis is possible in silkworm. So, it is very important to find out novel methods for induction of parthenogenesis. We investigated to attempt to get a novel parthenogenetic method. Accordingly, parthenogenetic studies on between unfertilized in vivo ovarian eggs of live silkworm moth(novel) and unfertilized in vitro ovarian eggs(conventional) taken out from live silkworm moth were investigated by hot water ($46^{\circ}C$), hot air ($46^{\circ}C$) and low temperature ($0^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$) treatments. The best ratio of parthenogenetic eggs was obtained with in vivo ovarian eggs of live silkworm moth rather than with in vitro ovarian eggs taken out from live silkworm moth in all the treatments. The optimum exposure time absolutely depended upon the temperatures of treatments and the forms of in vivo or in vitro ovarian eggs. From these results, we expect that in vivo artificial parthenogenetic treatments on live silkworm moth will be useful for the higher induction of parthenogenesis in the silkworm, B. mori.

  • Sharehouse has been supplied as an alternative to solving the steadily increasing one-room housing problem of single-person households every year, and it is necessary to investigate the satisfaction of residents who actually live in sharehouse through P.O.E. Therefore, this study analyzed priror researches related to the existing one-person households, sharehouses, and satisfaction surveys, and summarized indicators with high relevance and frequency to derive satisfaction survey factors that can clearly evaluate the improvement architectural plan of sharehouses. As a result, it was classified into 4 items in the 'general information' category to investigate the status, housing rental type, and housing cost of the sharehouse, 15 factors in the 'peripheral environment' category to evaluate the safety, 3 factors in the 'community' category, and 17 factors in the space (facility) and service category. In the "General Information" section, the overall one-person housing satisfaction, desired sharehouse type, housing rental type, housing cost, and living expenses were reduced. In the "Surrounding Environment", accessibility to public office, accessibility to cultural facilities, accessibility to medical facilities, accessibility to work and school, convenience stores, noise pollution and safety. In addition, in the "community" section, it consists of interactions with various people, relationships with housemates and in the "space (facilities) and service" section, heating, waterproof, soundproof, ventilation, moisture and condensation blocking, facility management, interior, room size, built-in furniture, storage space, laundry, parking. Most of the scales for each factor were 5-point Likert scales, allowing evaluation of the degree of satisfaction, and some factors presented criteria to induce structured answers. Therfore, it is expected that the survey will be conducted on residents who actually live by deriving factors for the satisfaction survey of one-person households living in the sharehouse, and the current status of the sharehouse will be identified, and the degree of satisfaction will be analyzed to be used for research.

  • Possessing of carbon nanotubes in biopolymer intrigued much interest due to their mechanical and unique nanoscale surface properties. Surface stiffness can be controlled by the amount of carbon nanotubes in polymer and surface wettability can be altered by the order of nanoscale surface roughness. Protein adsorption mechanism on nanostructured carbon nanotube/polymer thin film will be discussed in this study. In addition, we identified that mechanical stimuli also contribute the messenchymal stem cell and bone cell interactions. Importantly, live cell analysis system also showed altered morphology and cellular functions. Thus, embedding of carbon nanostructures simultaneously contribute to protein adsorption and cellular interactions. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the evidence that nanoscale surface features determine the subsequent biological interactions, such as protein adsorption and cellular interactions.
