  • The barley plant for whole crop forage is advantageous to have traits with higher photosynthetic rate, biomass, lodging resistance, and awnless spikes. The objective of this study is to investigate performance of near-isogenic line pairs for the awned and awnless in the field, and to observe the variations in photosynthetic rate, yield and their related traits under removal of flag leaf and awns. Grain yield was 6% higher, but biomass and photosynthetic rate were 6~16% and 6% lower in the awned line than those in the awnless grown in the field ,respectively. Defoliation of flag leaf resulted in approximately 3~4%, and 5~6% decreases in 1,000 kernels and grain weights, respectively. Deawning at the heading stage of the long awned line decreased 1,000 kernels and grain weights by 7% and 15%, respectively, The removal of both assimilative tissues caused 14 and 21% decrements in 1,000 kernels and grain weights. Apparent photosynthetic rate of leaf blade in awnless line was 6.1 -9. 7 $CO_2$$_2$ ${\mu}$mole $m^{-2}$ $s{-1}$, much higher than that in awned line. The relative rates in the second and third leaves were about 93% and 55~63%, respectively as compared with that in the flag leaf. The results of the experiments suggest that the awnless line selected for whole crop forage is a potential plant type with higher photosynthetic rate, leaf area and greater biomass.

  • In this paper, we propose the use of hierarchical classification for winter crop mapping based on satellite imagery. A hierarchical classification is a classifier that maps input data into defined subsumptive output categories. This classification method can reduce mixed pixel effects and improve classification performance. The methodology are illustrated focus on winter cropsin Gimje city, Jeonbuk with Landsat-8 imagery. First, agriculture fields were extracted from Landsat-8 imagery using Smart Farm Map. And then winter crop fields were extracted from agriculture fields using temporal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Finally, winter crop fields were then classified into wheat, barley, IRG, whole crop barley and mixed crop fields using signature from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The results indicate that hierarchical classifier could effectively identify winter crop fields with an overall classification accuracy of 98.99%. Thus, it is expected that the proposed classification method would be effectively used for crop mapping.

  • To cope with increasing importance of water stress in food crop production, some physiological characteristics, their cultivar-differences and grain yield of winter barley cultivars in response to water stress during reproductive stages were studied employing three covered-barley cultivars, Milyang 12, Durubori, and Olbori, one naked-barley cultivar, Baegdong, and one two-row malting-barley cultivar, Hyangmaeg. The barley grown in pot-soil was conditioned for 10 days under water stress, varying the time of water stress : 20 days before heading, 10 days before heading and the time of heading. The decrease in growth due to water stress varied greatly with the cultivars and time of water stress. The greatest injury occurred when water stress was imposed for 10 days from 10 days before heading : the culm length of water-stressed plants have shown reduced by 85∼98% of the non-stressed; the number of spikes per plant by 52∼83%; the number of grains per spike by 71∼86%; 1,000-grain weight by 80∼84%; yield per pot by 60∼94%. The number of spikes per plant as one of yield components was most sensitively affected. As a whole, the drought resistance of cultivars was high in the order of Olbori> Milyang 12 and Durubori> Hyangmaeg>Baegdong. On rewatering the plants after termination of the water stress treatment the recovery rate of free proline content and relative turgidity of flag leaf were higher in 3 covered-barley cultivars, and lower in cultivars Baegdong and Hyangmaeg.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of the drum structures and crop moisture contents on the performance of newly developed throw-in type axial thersher. Sachun No.2 malting barley with four different crop moisture levels was used as the testing material. Four different types of threshing drum; the cylindrical drum-equipped with teeth or rubber bars and the conical drum-equipped with teeth or rubber bars were tested. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The threshing efficiency of cylindrical drum was higher than that of the conical one, and the drum with teeth was more effective in threshing than the one with bars. However, the higher the threshing efficiency over the whole range of moisture levels and drum speeds given, the more the rapid and unexpectable variations in threshing efficiencies 2. The separation efficiency of the conical drum was decreased as drum speed was increased and was not so much influenced as crop moisture content. But in case of the cylindrical drum, the result was shown in opposite way to that of the conical one. The separation efficiency of the drum with teeth was higher than that of the drum with bars and no significant decrease in separating efficiency was found at wet crop condition. 3. Foreign matters other than grain passing through the concave sieve was decreased as crop moisture content was increased, and the purity was increased at middle range of drum speed regardless of drum types. 4. Minimum grain loss was found at 700 rpm to 800 rpm of drum speed for all types of drums. The effect of crop moisture content on total grain loss was varied with drum types. As far as the grain loss is concerned, the conical drum having teeth was not so greatly influenced by various crop moisture contents and drum speeds as compared with the other types of drum. 5. Generally, the crop moisture content has more relevant effect on the germination than the drum speed regardless of drum types. The germination percentage of grain threshed by the conical drum and the bar attached drum were higher than those of cylindrical one and teeth attached one, respectively.

  • This study was aimed to grow organic forage as a prime requirement for organic Hanwoo cattle production over a period of 3 years (2012~2015) in Gyeongbuk region, Korea through mixed cropping of winter fodder barley with legume and application of fermented cattle manure. The effect of barley-legume mixed cropping and application of different levels of fermented cattle manure was studied on forage productivity of whole-crop barley (WCB) and evaluation of feeding capacity of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) per unit area. The collected data was analyzed using SAS 9.3 software. Barley-legume mixed cropping increased (P<0.05) yields of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) as compared to those of sole WCB as monoculture. Similarly, acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents and relative feed value (RFV) were also higher (P<0.05) in barley-legume mixed sowing forage compared with those of sole WCB as monoculture. In case of manure application, yields of DM, CP and TDN were also found (P<0.05) highest in 100~150 kg N/ha. However, varying cattle manure levels did not influence (P>0.05) CP and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents. In response to increasing nitrogen application level, ADF content increased (P<0.05) but TDN content and RFV decreased (P<0.05). The Barley-legume mixed sowing and increasing application levels of fermented cattle manure also significantly enhanced (P<0.05) feeding capacity of organic Hanwoo (head/ha) having 450 kg body weight with 400 g of daily gain. Findings of present study indicated that barley-legume biculture not only cut nitrogen application level of fermented cattle manure by over 50 kg per ha but also increased their feed value and productivity of forage as compared to WCB monoculture. This would be contribution to the diversity of forage resources as well as production of organic animal product by creating low cost and high quality organic forage.

  • In order to determine the relationships between the rates of leaf senescence and photosynthate translocation during the grain filling periods in barley, field experiments were conducted through 1989/1990 crop year. Thirty barley varieties and lines having different leaf senescence were used for the experiments. Varieties differed significantly in the rate of leaf senescence and rate of grain filling. The rate of leaf senescence at early (10-20days after heading) and late period (20-30days after heading) during of grain filling were positively correlated with the rate of grain filling in same period, respectively. But the rate of leaf senescence at 10-20 days after heading negatively correlated with the rate of grain filling during the whole grain filling period (10-35 days after heading). Whereas, the rate of leaf senescence at late period was positively associated with the rate of grain filling during the whole grain filling period. Rates of grain filling at the late and whole periods have positively influence on grain weight(r=0.62**~-0.93**), but rate of leaf senescence at early period and duration of grain filling negatively correlated with the grain weight (r=-0.33~ -0.15). The patterns of leaf senescence index for the varieties tested were grouped by four. Among these patterns, the most ideal pattern was IV type.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the fresh yield and dry matter yield, and nutritive values of whole crop barley treated with Urea (200 kg/ha, T2) and ammonium sulfate fertilizer as 200 kg/ha (T3), 300 kg/ha (T4) and 400 kg/ha (T5) at the Bae-Ho reclaimed tideland. Korea from 2003 to 2005. Salt contents of soil in the ammonium sulfate plots (T3, T4, T5) were lower than those of T2. The fresh yields of ammonium sulfate plots (T3, T4, T5) were higher than those of T2 as 62% (p>0.05), 41% (p>0.05) and 23% (p<0.05), respectively. The dry matter yield of T3, T4 and T5 (ammonium sulfate) was significantly (p<0.05) higher at 5,080 kg/ha, 4,667 ka/ha, 4,040 kg/ha, respectively. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield tends to have a similar result. Crude protein (CP) content was highest in T3 and CP trends to decrease as the level of ammonium sulfate was increased. Total digestible nutrient (TDN) were high in T3 and T4. The sodium content of T3 and T4 were lower than T2. Based on the study, it was more desirable to use ammonium sulfate (200 kg N/ha) rather than Urea as fertilizer on reclaimed land in terms of forage production and nutritive value.

  • In this study, two experiments were conducted to evaluate the total mixed ration with fermented feed (TMRF) and total mixed ration (TMR) by rumen in vitro fermentation and their effects on the growth performance and blood characteristics of Hanwoo steers. In experiment 1, three Hanwoo steers ($600{\pm}47$ kg), each permanently fitted with a ruminal cannula were used. In this experiment, three diets designated as T1, TMRF (18.4% fermented feed, tall fescue, mammoth wild rye forage and whole crop barley); T2, TMRF (17.7% fermented feed, rice straw and whole crop barley); and T3, TMR (rice straw, whole crop barley and probiotics, but no fermented feed), which were subjected to rumen in vitro fermentation for 48 h. The results demonstrated that DM disappearance rate gradually increased with advancing fermentation time, but T1 and T2 were higher than the T3 (p<0.05) from 3 h to 12 h, but insignificant (p>0.05) at 24 and 48 h. None of the specific VFAs were affected except for acetic and non volatile lactic acids, which were produced more in T2 than in T1 and T3 at 24 h and 48 h of incubation. A/P was lower in T1 and T2 than inT3 at 24 h (p<0.05) and 48 h (p>0.05) of incubation. These results confirmed that TMRF-related treatment shows a superior performance to that of TMR during the ruminal fermentation period. In experiment 2, the three diets in experiment 1 plus 1 more control diet (concentrates, probiotics and 2% rice straw of body weight) were fed to the 48 Hanwoo steers ($160{\pm}10$ kg) for a period of 168 d. The results demonstrated that the daily and total live weight gain and feed efficiency were higher (p<0.05) in the TMRF and TMR groups than in the control group. SGOT, SGPT and BUN (p<0.05) were reduced in TMRF relative to the control and TMR groups by 168 d which confirmed that TMRF shows better blood profiles than the TMR and control groups. Overall, these results appear to show that TMRF has better in vitro ruminal characteristics than those of TMR; growth performance and blood profiles were also found to be superior in TMRF than in the TMR and control groups. Thus, our findings suggest that TMRF-based feed supplies are favorable for Hanwoo cattle.

  • A new barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar 'Mihan' having ruminant-palatable semi-smooth awn and good silage quality was developed at National Institute of Crop Science(NICS), RDA in 2016. This cultivar was derived from a cross of the 'SB00T2064' and 'Suwon385' in 2001. And its promising line showed high yielding through the preliminary yield trials(PYT) and advanced yield trials (AYT) in Iksan from 2012 to 2013. It was designated as the 'Iksan487'. 'Iksan487' was conducted to regional yield trials (RYT) in one upland field and five paddy fields around Korea for three years from 2014 to 2016. And it was released as the name of 'Mihan'. It has growth habit of IV, erect plant type, green leaf and semi-smooth awn. Its heading date was April 23 in the paddy field and maturing date was May 24. Plant height of 'Mihan' was 96cm. Mihan's spikes per $m^2$ was 665. It has better winter hardiness and resistance to BaYMV (Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus) than that of barley cultivar 'Youngyang'. The average dry matter of 'Mihan' was about $10.9ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field. And average feed quality of 'Mihan' was 10.3% of crude protein content, 26.1% of ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), 46.9 % of NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) and 68.2% of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients). 'Mihan' had grade I of silage quality. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum average temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.
