Modeling and Applications of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) for Lithium-ion Batteries

  • As research on secondary batteries becomes important, interest in analytical methods to examine the condition of secondary batteries is also increasing. Among these methods, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method is one of the most attractive diagnostic techniques due to its convenience, quickness, accuracy, and low cost. However, since the obtained spectra are complicated signals representing several impedance elements, it is necessary to understand the whole electrochemical environment for a meaningful analysis. Based on the understanding of the whole system, the circuit elements constituting the cell can be obtained through construction of a physically sound circuit model. Therefore, this mini-review will explain how to construct a physically sound circuit model according to the characteristics of the battery cell system and then introduce the relationship between the obtained resistances of the bulk (Rb), charge transfer reaction (Rct), interface layer (RSEI), diffusion process (W) and battery characteristics, such as the state of charge (SOC), temperature, and state of health (SOH).

Kabuki syndrome: clinical and molecular characteristics

  • Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a rare syndrome characterized by multiple congenital anomalies and mental retardation. Other characteristics include a peculiar facial gestalt, short stature, skeletal and visceral abnormalities, cardiac anomalies, and immunological defects. Whole exome sequencing has uncovered the genetic basis of KS. Prior to 2013, there was no molecular genetic information about KS in Korean patients. More recently, direct Sanger sequencing and exome sequencing revealed KMT2D variants in 11 Korean patients and a KDM6A variant in one Korean patient. The high detection rate of KMT2D and KDM6A mutations (92.3%) is expected owing to the strict criteria used to establish a clinical diagnosis. Increased awareness and understanding of KS among clinicians is important for diagnosis and management of KS and for primary care of KS patients. Because mutation detection rates rely on the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis and the inclusion or exclusion of atypical cases, recognition of KS will facilitate the identification of novel mutations. A brief review of KS is provided, highlighting the clinical and genetic characteristics of patients with KS.

저장기간에 따른 마(Dioscorea batatas)를 첨가하여 만든 김치의 품질 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Kimchi Prepared with Dioscorea batatas)

  • In this study, we produced kimchi with cooked Dioscorea batatas yam based on the its outstanding nutritional value, biological activity, and pharmacological action. Sliced kimchi cabbage, processed white radish kimchi (kkakdugi), and whole kimchi cabbage were prepared with 3% Dioscorea batatas, and the physicochemical and bioactivity characteristics were analyzed. In three kinds of Dioscorea batatas. The pH of the kimchi decreased and its acidity increased as the storage period was extended. The period of the maximum total viable cell count of the sliced cabbage and the processed white radish kimchi (kkakdugi) was 14 days, while the period for whole kimchi cabbage was 21 days. The period of maximum lactic acid bacteria count was 14 days for all three kinds. For physiological activities, polyphenol and flavonoid contents and DPPH elimination were highest immediately after production of the kimchi. Also, anthocyanin content increased as the storage period extended. The pH, acidity, total viable cell count, lactic acid bacteria count, and physiological activities were shown to be different according to the type of kimchi and the storage period.

헛개나무 선발개체 차대의 생장 및 엽특성 (Leaf Characteristics and Growth Performance in Progenies of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai)

  • 우량품종 육성을 위해 선발된 헛개나무 차대묘 20가계의 생장특성과 엽특성을 조사한 결과, 전체 평균 묘고는 61.6cm, 평균 근원직경은 6.98mm였으며, 가계별로는 KW 2-5 가계가 평균 묘고 79.3cm로 가장 우수한 생장을 보인 반면 근원직경에서는 JN 2-2 가계가 평균 9.16mm로 가장 우수한 생장을 나타내었다. 묘고와 근원직경에서 가장 우수한 생장을 보인 KW 2-5와 JN 2-2 가계는 가장 낮은 생장을 보인 가계들과 비교하여 각각 57%와 53%의 우수한 생장을 보였다. 묘고와 근원직경의 초기생장 상위 10% 가계를 선발했을 때 KW 2-5와 JN 2-2 가계가 전체 가계 평균에 비해 125%의 선발 효과를 보였으며, 상위 20% 가계를 선발했을 때 KW 2-5, JN 2-2, KW 1-1, KW 1-15 가계에서 115%의 선발효과를 나타냈다. 한편, 엽장과 엽폭, 엽병길이와 엽병직경 및 엽형지수와 측맥수 등 6항목에 대하여 엽특성을 조사한 결과, 평균 변이계수는 $9.4{\sim}42.4%$로 나타나 변이 폭이 큰것을 알 수 있었으며 특히, 엽병길이와 엽병직경 특성의 변이계수가 각각 42.4%와 28.7%로 다른 특성들에 비해 큰 값을 나타냈다. 조사된 엽특성들은 모두 가계간 유의적 차이가 인정되었으며, 엽장과 엽형지수간 상관을 제외한 모든 특성들간의 상관에서는 정의상관 관계가 인정되었고 특히, 엽장과 엽폭특성간의 상관계수가 0.8049로 나타나 두 특성간에 매우 유의적인 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

양 방향성과 높은 홀딩전압을 갖는 사이리스터 기반 Whole-Chip ESD 보호회로 (The Design of SCR-based Whole-Chip ESD Protection with Dual-Direction and High Holding Voltage)

  • 본 논문에서는 높은 홀딩 전압을 갖는 SCR 기반의 파워 클램프용 ESD 보호회로와 whole-chip ESD 보호를 위한 양 방향성 ESD 보호회로를 제안하였다. 측정 결과, 파워 클램프의 경우 N/P-웰과 P-drift 영역의 길이의 변화에 따른 홀딩 전압의 증가를 확인하였으며 I/O의 경우 5V의 트리거 전압과 3V의 홀딩 전압을 확인하였다. 일반적인 whole-chip ESD 보호회로와 달리, VDD-VSS 모드 뿐만 아니라 PD, ND, PS, NS의 ESD stress mode의 방전 경로를 제공하여 효과적인 보호를 제공하며 최대 HBM 8kV, MM 400V의 감내특성을 가진다. 따라서 제안된 whole-chip ESD 보호회로는 2.5V~3.3V의 공급전원을 가지는 application에 적용 가능하다.

누에 품종별 누에나방의 수명과 실용형질 (General Characteristics and Life Span of Silkworm Moth According to Varieties, Bombyx mori.)

  • General characteristics and life span of silkworm moth were investigated amongst 277 gene resources preserved and maintained in Korea. Silkworm varieties were classified according to the commercial characteristics and the viability of tested varieties. There were significant differences among the eight different commercial characteristics of silkworm such as whole larval period, duration of 5th instar, pupal body weight, single cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, cocoon yield and longevity, Tropical race showed the longest life span among the other five geographical races, and followed by Japanese, European, Chinese and Korean race in order. In the longevity of each variety, Daizo(sdi) showed the shortest life span with 4.3days, and J037 was the longest as 16.0 days. Average longevity of female was 11.1 days as showed 3.0 days longer than that of male which was 8.2 days. Total average longevity of the whole varieties was 9.7days. In the correlation between the longevity and commercial characteristics, there was a tendency that the commercial characteristics became better when the life span was longer. According to the result of Complete Linkage Cluster Analysis, the genetic resources of 277 silkworm varieties classified into 5 groups such as “Group I”for short life span with low cocoon yielding “Group II”for middle life span with middle cocoon yielding,“Group III”for the shortest life span with low cocoon yielding, “Group IV”for high pupation rate and the highest cocoon yielding with comparatively long life span, and “Group V”for the longest life span with comparatively high cocoon yielding.

7,12-Dimethylbenz[$\alpha$anthracene 및 N-methyl-N-nitrosourea를 투여한 랫드 유선 조직 배양에 대한 형태학적 변화 (Morphological Changes in the Mammary Organ Culture of the Rat Treated with 7,12-Dimethylbenz[$\alpha$]anthracene and N-methyl-N-nitrosourea)

  • The organ culture model of the whole mammary gland has many advantages for the study of branching morphogenesis and biological characteristics, including tumorigenesis. Prior to whole gland organ culture, rats were treated with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) or N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) for one week. The tramdorming effect and the morphological changes were assessed by the whole mount preparations and histopathological examination in terminal end buds (TEB), terminal ducts (TD), alveolar buds (AB), alveolar lobules (AL) and hyperplastic alveolar nodules (HAN) of the mammary gland. Grossfindings of the mammary glands at dissection were higher branching morphogenesis and larger volume in carcinogen-treated groups than in carcinogen-non-treated groups. Results of the whole mount method were coincided with those of the histopathological observations. Circular TEB, normally maintained AB, AL, and high cellular density were more frequently observed in carcinogen-treated groups than in carcinogen-nan-treated groups. Histopathologically, as a preneoplastic marker, HAN was maintained only in mammary organ culture of the carcinogen-treated groups. These findings suggest that in vivo trans-formation effects by carcinogens persisted during the mammary organ culture. These results were more characteristic in DMBA than in MNU-treated group. Ducts and terminal ducts appeared to have lost morphology during their growths in case of without diethylstilbestrol (DES). The fact that in vitro organ culture without DES was resulted in abnormal ductular morphogenesis confirms that DES is a physiological regulator of ductular epithelial cell growth.

분리대두단백질이 첨가된 증편의 저장성에 관한 연구 (The Effects of SPI(Soybean Protein Isolate) on Retrogradation in Jeung-pyun)

  • This study examined Jeung-pyun(JP) Retrogradation in samples containing 3% whole protein, 7S protein, or 11S protein(w/w) that were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 6, 12, 24 and 72 hr. Rheometery and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) were used in the analysis. The pH of the dough decreased during the fermentation process, but it increased after steaming. The JP prepared with soybean protein isolate(SPI) had higher pH than the control group. During storage the textural characteristics of the JP showed effects according to the additions of SPI. After 6 hr of storage, the JP samples containing soybean flour, whole protein, 7S protein, and 11S protein had lower hardness valuse. From 4 hr to 12 hr, higher springiness values were found in the samples containing whole protein, 7S protein and 11S protein. At 0 hr, the control group had the highest cohesiveness value, but after 24 hr it presented the lowest value. For gumminess, after 6 hr of storage, the control group offered the lowest value. Whereas after 12 hr of storage the whole protein group showed the highest value, and at 24 hr, the whole protein, 7S protein, and 11S protein groups had higher values. According to the DSC results, the 11S protein group had lower enthalpy values(${\bigtriangleup}H$) suggesting that adding 11S protein to JP might improve starch retrogradation. After 72 hr of storage, the control group had the highest onset temperature($T_{o}$) and peak temperature($T_{p}$) whereas the 7S and 11S protein JP samples had higher conclusion temperatures($T_{c}$). Therefore, based on the different analysis result between the control and treatment groups, the addition of SPI to Jp had effects on retrogradation.

염전위충(Haemonchus contortus) 생식기관의 DNase활성에 관한 연구 (Study on DNase activity specific from Haemonchus contortus reproductive tissue)

  • DNase activity in Haemonchus contortus reproductive tissue was characterized and compared to that in whole worm. DNase activity in reproductive tissue was detected throughout pHs 4-10 with high activity under acidic conditions. The activity was not inhibited by 10 mM EDTA at pH 5.0, but largely inhibited by pH 7.0. The activity produced DNA fragments with mixtures of 3'-hydroxyls (OH) and 3'- phosphates (P) at each pH. Three distinct DNase activities were identified and had $M_rs$ of 34, 36 and 38.5 kDa in zymograms, which were distinguished according to pH requirement and sensitivity to EDTA. Among them, the 36 kDa reproductive tissue DNase had predominant activity at pH 5.0, but very weak at pH 7.0, and this activity was not inhibited by EDTA at pH 5.0. These characteristics of the 36 kDa reproductive tissue DNase resemble those of classic acidic DNases. In contrast, 36 kDa whole worm DNase activity had high activity at both pH 5.0 and 7.0. While the 36 kDa DNase activity at pH 5.0 was similar in both reproductive tissue and whole worm samples, the activity at pH 7.0 was predominantly detected in whole worm sample. This suggests that the 36 kDa whole worm DNase at pH 5.0 differs from that at pH 7.0. Thus, results indicate that the EDTA-insensitive 36 kDa DNase at pH 5.0 is specific for H. contortus reproductive tissue.

Whole Chicken Feather-Degrading Keratinolytic Protease 생산균주의 분리 및 특성 (Selection and Cultural Characteristics of Whole Chicken Feather-Degrading Bacterium, Bacillus sp. SMMJ-2)

  • 가금류의 feather은 전 세계적으로 발생되지 않는 지역이 없을 만큼 광범위하게 발생되어지는 폐기물로써, 현재까지 많은 연구자들에 의하여 그 이용성에 대한 연구가 활발하게 이루지고 있다. 그러나 disulfide 결합, 수소결합 및 이온결합에 의하여 매우 강한 결합력을 가지는 feather 구성 단백질의 화학적인 성질 때문에 분해하여 사용하기에 많은 어려움이 있다. 가금류 폐기물을 이용한 사료의 제조과정에서 가열 및 가압 등의 과정을 거치면서 아미노산의 손실이 발생하고 낮은 소화율 등이 문제로 야기되어지고 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위한 노력으로 미생물이 생산하는 keratinolytic protease를 이용하고자 산업적으로 이용 가능성을 가지는 균주를 분리하였다. 토양 시료로부터 Bacillus sp. SMMJ-2, FL-3, NO-4 및 RM-12 4종의 keratinolytic protease 생성균을 분리하였다. 이 균주들은 5.0% skim milk agar plate에서 높은 protease 활성을 나타내었으며, 2.0% whole chicken feather agar plate에서도 많은 점질성의 물질을 생산하였다. Keratinolytic protease 생산을 위하여 배지4($0.7%\;K_{2}HPO_{4},\;0.2%\;KH_{2}PO_{4},\;0.1%$ fructose, 1.2% soybean meal, $0.01%\;Na_{2}CO_3$, pH 7.0)에서 Bacillus sp. SMMJ-2에 의한 keratinolytic protease의 생산을 조사한 결과, 배양 3일에 가장 높은 keratinolytic protease 활성을 나타내었다. 그러나, Basal medium(0.05% NaCl, $0.03%\;Na_{2}HPO_{4},\;0.04%\;NaH_{2}PO_{4},\;0.5%$ whole chicken feather, pH 7.0)에 유일한 탄소 및 질소원으로 whole chicken feather를 첨가하고 배양한 결과, $30^{\circ}C$에서 일주일 이상 배양하였을 때 feather은 모두 분해되었으나 깃대는 분리하지 못하였고 배지 4에 질소원으로 1.2% whole chicken feather를 첨가하였을 때 40시간 이내에 깃대를 포함한 feather를 모두 분해하였다. Bacillus sp. SMMJ-2에 의한 keratinolytic protease의 생산은 접종 후 9시간이 지나면서 생산되기 시작하여 24시간 동안 배양하였을 때 최대 활성의 86%를 나타내는 것으로 조사되었다. Bacillus sp. SMMJ-2에 의하여 생산되어지는 keratinolytic protease 활성은 $30^{\circ}C$, 180 rpm으로 3일간 배양했을 때 106 units/ml/min 이였으며, protease 활성은 540 units/ml/min을 나타내었다. 온도와 pH에 대한 효소의 안정성은 $50\%$ acetone을 이용하여 분리한 효소로 조사한 결과, $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$까지는 80% 이상의 잔존효소활성을 나타내었고, $60^{\circ}C$ 이상에는 20분간 열처리로 효소가 거의 실활 되었다. 효소의 pH 안정성은 pH $6.0{\sim}12.0$에서는 비교적 안정한 것으로 조사되었다.
