  • As a result of the Four-River Restoration Project in Korea, the habitat of endangered plant species of Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae and Polygonatum stenophyllum, which had been natively grown in the riparian zone of Namhan River, was destroyed and artificial replacement habitats were created. In this study, Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) was used to determine whether the replacement habitats are suitable for each species or not. From October 2015 to July 2016, Habitat Evaluate Procedures (HEP) were conducted on two replacement habitats of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae (Gangcheonsum and Sum-River) and on two replacement habitats of P. stenophyllum (Gangcheonsum and Youngjuk) in the Namhan River watershed. As evaluation parameters for A. altaicus var. uchiyamae habitat, habitat matrix (ratio of unburied gravel), height above the ordinary water level, soil nutrients, and light conditions were selected and for P. stenophyllum habitat, soil texture, light conditions, and coverage of companion species were selected. HSI was applied to evaluate the suitability of each replacement habitat. According to the result of the evaluation, replacement habitats of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae and P. stenophyllum located in Gangcheonsum have relatively high HSI values as 0.839 and 0.846, respectively. On the other hand, replacement habitats of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae in Sum-River and P. stenophyllum in Youngjuk zone have HSI value of 0, indicating unsuitable habitats for these species. This is the first attempt to apply HSI for plant species in Korea and proved the usefulness of HSI on plants.

  • Linked treatment refers to a system that relieves the burden of the business by linking high concentrations of wastewater such as human waste, manure, leachate, and other industrial wastewater to nearby municipal wastewater treatment plants(MWTPs). In 2018, 187 MWTPs, which are about 4.5% of the total domestic MWTPs, have implemented a linked treatment system, but local governments are having difficulties in operating sewage treatment due to lack of reasonable cost estimation standards. Therefore, we proposed an improvement plan to solve the problem in the calculation method that currently imposes linked wastewater. To this end, the effects and correlations of the linkage treatment system on the sewage treatment unit were analyzed, and among them, the main factors with the highest correlation were applied to the improvement plan. As a result, an improvement plan that improved three parts of the existing calculation method was presented, and the calculation method and the calculation case using the existing literature values were also presented. This can be used as a basis for future reference by local governments to implement linkage treatment, and to revise local sewerage ordinance and is believed to be helpful in operating a rational linkage system.

  • Recently, high-concentration linked wastewater has been introduced into a nearby municipal wastewater treatment plants(MWTPs), but it is difficult to MWTP in local governments due to an unreasonable linked treatment charge system, and there is insufficient evidence or data to prove this. However, the MWTP, which is a national essential infrastructure, is generally exempt from the preliminary feasibility study, so there have been no cases where economic evaluation was conducted. Therefore, we proposed an improvement plan that can compensate for the disadvantages of the existing linked processing charges through previous studies. In this study, a comparative evaluation of how much economic feasibility can be improved compared to the existing ones when applying the improvement plan by conducting an economic analysis. For this, reference was made to the preliminary feasibility assessment data of the existing environmental facilities and the cost factors and benefit factors established during the modernization of the old sewage treatment facilities. As a result of the study, the B/C(Benefit/cost) value was quite low in the past, but when the improvement proposal proposed by the researchers was applied, it was confirmed that the B/C value increased close to 1. Therefore, it is considered to be very reasonable to calculate the linkage processing charge according to the linked wastewater load proposed by the researchers.

  • For the conservation of both Sericinus montela (vulnerable species by red book of Korea) and A. contorta, we investigated environmental factors affecting the growth and reproduction of Aristolochia contorta. We selected four A. contorta habitats at Gapyeong, Pyeongtaek, Cheongju, and Yeoju in Korea and surveyed community and habitat characteristics of companion species, herbivore appearance, support types, and soil physicochemical properties in July and October, 2018. Habitat environments and the growth and reproduction characteristics of A. contorta were different according to four habitats of different regions. In particular, the fastest growth speed and earliest flowering and fruiting were observed in Pyeongtaek. Growth of A. contorta in Cheongju and Yeoju were interrupted by aboveground damage from human disturbance. In this study, support types seemed to be important for growth speed of A. contorta. Flowering and fruiting timing were likely to be related to combined effects of soil cation contents and competitive and herbivore stresses. Therefore, providing effective support and reducing biological stress should be necessary for stable growth and proper flowering and fruiting timing of A. contorta. In addition, experimental evidence would be needed to figure out the effect of soil cation and biological stress on flowering and fruiting of A. contorta in detail.

  • Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae, endangered plants to grade II designated by the Ministry of Environment Korea, is only distributed in Gyeongsangbukdo, Chungcheongnamdo in Korea. In order to know the effects of elevated $CO_2$ concentration and temperature on ecological responses of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae, this study was carried out in the control(ambient $CO_2$ + ambient temperature) and treatment(elevated $CO_2$ + elevated temperature) at glasshouse. As a result, germination rate of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae was higher in control than in treatment. Period of alive leaf was longer in control than in treatment. Period of blooming and seed maturity was faster in control than in treatment. Shoot and root weight were heavier in control than in treatment. No. of inflorescence per plant and seed per inflorescence was higher in control than in treatment. Weight of inflorescence per plant, seed per inflorescence and one seed was heavier in control than in treatment. These results indicate that ecological responses of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae may be more negatively affected by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature except for phenological responses of that may be delayed under future global warming situation.

  • We have studied the changes of the environmental and vegetational factors according to the hydro-seral stages in the shoreline of the lagoons, Korea. We have divided seral stages into 7 stages from open water stage to the stratified forest stage considering as the characteristics of water body, dominance of submerged and emergent plant, and development of the shrub, subtree and tree layer. According to the successional stage, water depth gradually decreased and water quality changed from seawater to brackish water and from brackish water to fresh water, organic matter in a soil layer gradually increased, and the litter layer grew up. As the development of the vegetation structure, the life-form of the vascular plants changed as follows; open water ${\rightarrow}$ submerged plant and floating-leaved plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant and submerged plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant, mesophyte and scrub ${\rightarrow}$ mesophyte. In the late seral stage, the 3 different forest types were established by the water retention or drainage and nutrient accumulation of the soil layer. Salix dominant forest developed in the wetted sites, the forest type dominated by Pinus thunbergii, Carex pumila and mesophytes developed in the well drained sites causing by sand substrate, and the forest type dominated by the planted or ruderals such as Pinus densiflora, Robinia psedo-acacia, Festuca ovina, Setaria viridis ect. developed in the sites composed of forest soil introduced by artificial reclamation.

  • Feces contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate, potassium and research of the impact on the environment from feces is very diverse. However, despite the importance of mammals to environment, studies of mammals into the terrestrial ecosystems are rare. Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis) is an endemic species of Korea and China, and we conducted on factor of plant growth in relation to feces of Korean water deer depending on land use patterns. The analysis of growth, biomass and C/N ratio of Zea mays, amount of feces and land use patterns are strongly affecting the C/N ratio and growth of the Zea mays. The quantity of the feces also influences the growth of plants instead of the land use patterns. Furthermore, the feces of Korean water deer have a lower C/N ratio than that of other animals' feces. Being the process of composting, it is able to serve a suitable fertilizer for a crop growth. In this study, we investigated the impact of feces into the environment in the terrestrial ecosystems and we were able to provide the basic data to the resources of an efficient scheme of animal feces. Further research is needed to quantify the materials amongst the plant, soil and animal, and to understand the relationship ecosystem.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of micro-topography to vegetation pattern in Dunchon-dong wetland. To characterize the effect of micro-topography, changes in water level and vegetation pattern were monitored from 2007 to 2008. Depending on the relative elevation, the study site was divided into 4 sectors. The relative areas of sectors in ascending order were 11%, 10%, 18% and 24%, respectively. During investigation period, average water pH was 6.10 (${\pm}0.13$), electron conductivity was $51.5({\pm}6.0){\mu}s/cm$, $PO_4$-P, $NO_3$-N and $NH_4$-N concentration were $0.04({\pm}0.02)mg/L$, $0.14({\pm}0.07)mg/L$, and lower than 0.01mg/L, respectively. Water level was very changeable in low-water season because the area of lowest sector was small. This characteristic increased the effect of difference of accumulated precipitation from March to April in 2007 and 2008 to plant community composition in lower sectors. Different plant guilds dominated respective sectors and annual plants were major dominant species in the study site. This study suggested that the elevation gradients are necessary to create the habitats for various plant guilds in wetland.

  • The increased $CO_2$ concentration and temperature affect ecological responses of plants. In order to know the effects of global warming on the Viola raddeana Regal, endangered aquatic plant designated by the Ministry of Environment Korea, this study was investigated at control and treatment(increased $CO_2$ concentration + increased temperature) in glasshouse. Then, autecological responses of V. raddeana were monitored and measured. As a result, shoot length, number of fruits per plant, number of branch per plant, number of seeds per fruit, number of fruits per branch, and weight of 10 seeds were higher in control than in treatment. number of leaves per branch was higher in treatment than in control. Length of axis, length of branch and number of leaves per plant were not different between in the control and in the treatment. These results demonstrated that the reproductive response of V. raddeana might be negatively influenced by increased $CO_2$ concentration and temperature. The global warming will be one of the main causes of extinction for V. raddeana Regal.
