  • Background: The chemical characterization of metallic alloys and oxides is conventionally carried out by wet chemical analytical methods and/or instrumental methods. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is capable of analyzing samples nondestructively. As a part of a chemical quality control exercise, Zircaloys 2 and 4, nimonic alloy, and zirconium oxide samples were analyzed by two INAA methods. The samples of alloys and oxides were also analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and direct current Arc OES methods, respectively, for quality assurance purposes. The samples are important in various fields including nuclear technology. Methods: Samples were neutron irradiated using nuclear reactors, and the radioactive assay was carried out using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Major to trace mass fractions were determined using both relative and internal monostandard (IM) NAA methods as well as OES methods. Results: In the case of alloys, compositional analyses as well as concentrations of some trace elements were determined, whereas in the case of zirconium oxides, six trace elements were determined. For method validation, British Chemical Standard (BCS)-certified reference material 310/1 (a nimonic alloy) was analyzed using both relative INAA and IM-NAA methods. Conclusion: The results showed that IM-NAA and relative INAA methods can be used for nondestructive chemical quality control of alloys and oxide samples.

  • It was found that the absorbent mixed with 2-aminoethanol and others has been applied to remove them via chemical neutralization. The absorbent of natural second metabolites was achieved by a removal efficiency of 20~30% by itself depending on treatment conditions, but the complex absorbent mixed with 0.2% amine chemical provides the removal efficiency of over 98%. Optimal removal efficiencies have been examined against two major parameters of the temperature and pH to remove ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gases. The chemical analysis was also performed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The monoterpenes in an essential oil reacted with odorous compounds by neutralization and their reaction mechanism was partially elucidated.

  • The rain water samples were collected at Chunchon and Seoul by using wet only automatic sampler from January 1996 through 1997. The daily base rain water samples collected over than 95% rainy events components, $SO_4^{-2}$, $NO_3^-$, $CI^-$, NH_4^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$, and $K^+$, by ion chromatography. In 1996, about 77% of sampled rain water showed below pH 5.6 and the 60% of rain water was lower than pH 5.0. The volume weighted average pH was 4.7 at all sites. In 1997, the volume weighted average pH was 4.6 and 4.9 at Seoul and Chunchon, respectively. Among the rain water samples,, 87% and 55% fo samples showed below than pH 5.6 and 5.0, respectively. The pH value of Chunchon was significantly (p<0.05) lower than Seoul at the rain samples for less than 20mm rainfall. However conductivity of the rain samples were 20.9$\mu$S/cm for 1996 and 27.7$\mu$S/cm for 1997 at Seoul, and 19.1$\mu$S/cm for 1996 and 14.1$\mu$S/cm for 1997 at Chunchon. $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ contributed 65.9% and 29.6% of free acidity at Seoul, respectively. The ratio of [$NO_3^-$]/[nss-$SO_4^{-2}$] were 0.43 at Seoul and 0.51 at Chunchon for rain samples for less than 20mm rainfall. • BGsome coating on the surface of illite powder was attempted to impart skin affinity and improve various characteristics of the powder for makeup cosmetics. BGsome is a type of hydrated liquid crystalline vesicles prepared by the hydration of 1,3-butylene glycol (BG) dissolved lecithin. BGsome droplets were coated through wet process and the coated powders were analyzed by TGA, SEM, and particle size measurements. Effect of BGsome coating on the physical properties, such as flow-ability, dispersibility, spreadability, and adhesion, were examined. The repose angle of BGsome-coated illite was decreased, which means that BGsome coating improves the flowability of the powder. Dispersibility, spreadability, and adhesion of the coated illite were also improved remarkably. The result of adhesion tests showed that the BGsome-coated illite was evenly adhered onto artificial leather surface with almost no lumps. The flowability, dispersibility, spreadability and adhesion of face powders containing the BGsome-coated illite were also improved.

  • Bio-liquid is a liquid by-product of the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) reaction, converting wet biomass into solid hydrochar, bio-liquid, and bio-gas. Since bio-liquid contains various compounds, it requires efficient sampling method to extract the target compounds from bio-liquid. In this research, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in bio-liquid was extracted based on hollow fiber supported liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and determined by Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The well-known major components of biodiesel, including methyl myristate, palmitate, methyl palmitoleate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, and methyl linoleate had been selected as standard materials for FAME analysis using HF-LPME. Physicochemical properties of bio-liquid was measured that the acidity was 3.30 (${\pm}0.01$) and the moisture content was 100.84 (${\pm}3.02$)%. The optimization of HF-LPME method had been investigated by varying the experimental parameters such as extraction solvent, extraction time, stirring speed, and the length of HF at the fixed concentration of NaCl salt. As a result, optimal conditions of HF-LPME for FAMEs were; n-octanol for extraction solvent, 30 min for extraction time, 1200 rpm for stirring speed, 20 mm for the HF length, and 0.5 w/v% for the concentration of NaCl. Validation of HF-LPME was performed with limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), dynamic range, reproducibility, and recovery. The results obtained from this study indicated that HF-LPME was suitable for the preconcentration method and the quantitative analysis to characterize FAMEs in bio-liquid generated from food waste via HTC reaction.

  • $(Ba_{0.8-x}Sr_{0.2})Y_xTiO_3\;(BSYT)$ powders were prepared by the calcination of metal-oxalate precipitates, which were obtained by wet chemical method using Ba, Sr, Y and Ti-nitrates and oxalic acid. Yttrium content, sintering temperature and cooling rate were taken as experimental factors. Response surface method was applied to modelling of the room temperature resistivity of BSYT. The results indicated that the Yttrium content had larger effect on the room temperature resistivity and minimum room temperature resistivity was at Yttrium content of 0.24 mol%. The validity of a modelling equation was confirmed by comparing the measured room temperature resistivity with the calculated one.

  • To investigate new potential application of a clay material for C/C composites, illite added C/C composites were prepared with various illite contents. The improvement of filler effect by illite size reduction was also investigated using wet ballmilling by evaluating illite/phenolic resin infiltration using bulk density and porosity measurements, chemical structural changes of the composites using XRD, and thermal oxidation stability in air of the composites using TGA. The size reduction of illite resulted in narrower particle size distribution and improved illite infiltration into carbon preform. And the resultant C/C composites prepared with illite had even more improved thermal oxidation stability in air, showing more increased IDTs up to $100^{\circ}C$, compared to those of the C/C composites with pristine illite, due to the SiC formation through carbothermal reduction between illite and carbon materials. The illite induced delay in oxidation of the illite-C/C composites was also observed and the delayed oxidation behavior was attributed to the layered structure of illite, which improved illite/phenol resin infiltration. Therefore, the potential use of illite as filler to improve oxidation stability of C/C composite can be promising. And the size reduction of illite can improve its effect on the desired properties of illite-C/C composites even more.

  • Ultra-fine alumina, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, with ${\phi}$ = 0.1∼0.5 ${\mu}$m was obtained from pure ammonium aluminum sulfate(alum) as the thermal decomposition product. Pure alum(> 99.7%) could be prepared by the precepitation and the successive recrystallization in an acidic aqueous solution at pH = 1.5∼2.5, which was theoretically predicted by only considering the concentrations of hydroxide and carbonate for aluminum and sodium in the solution, and also experimentally confirmed as the optimum precepitation condition for alum without forming any impurities like aluminum hydroxide or sodium one.

  • DDT (1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane) is one of the organic synthetic pesticides that has many negative effects for human health and the environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of mixed cutures of white-rot fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus, and biosurfactant-producing bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis, on DDT biodegradation. Bacteria were added into the P. ostreatus culture (mycelial wet weight on average by 8.53 g) in concentrations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 ml ($1ml{\approx}1.25{\times}10^9$ bacteria cells/ml culture). DDT was degraded to approximately 19% by P. ostreatus during the 7-day incubation period. The principal result of this study was that the addition of 3 ml of P. aeruginosa into P. ostreatus culture gave the highest DDT degradation rate (approximately 86%) during the 7-day incubation period. This mixed culture combination of the fungus and bacteria also gave the best ratio of optimization of 1.91. DDD (1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane), DDE (1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethylene), and DDMU (1-chloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethylene) were detected as metabolic products from the DDT degradation by P. ostreatus and P. aeruginosa. The results of this study indicate that P. aeruginosa has a synergistic relationship with P. ostreatus and can be used to optimize the degradation of DDT by P. ostreatus.

  • 10 wt% Mn supported on various commercial $TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation method for the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with $NH_3$. A combination of various physico-chemical techniques such as BET, XRD, XPS and TPR were used to characterize these catalysts. MnOx surface densities on MnOx/$TiO_2$ catalyst were related to surface area. As MnOx surface density lowered with high dispersion, the SCR activity for low temperature was increased and the reduction temperature ($MnO_2$ ${\rightarrow}$ $Mn_2O_3$) of surface MnOx was lower. For a high SCR, MnOx could be supported on a high surface area of $TiO_2$ and should be existed a high dispersion of non-crystalline species.
