The removal of dissolved oxygen(DO) from water was studied using a poly(vinyliene fluoride)(PVDF) hollow fiber membrane contactor(HFMC) with the vacuum degassing process(VDP), Asymmetric porous PVDF hollow fiber membranes (HFM) for membrane contactor were prepared by a wet phase inversion method. In spinning of these PVDF hollow fibers, dimethy lacetamide (DMAc), LiCl and pure water were used as a solvent, a pore-forming additive and internal/external coagulant, respectively. The characteristics of the structure(pore size, porosity etc.) of the prepared PVDF HFMs as a function of concentration of pore-forming additive in polymer dope solution were studied. Also, the removal efficiency of DO from water according to flow rates of water, using PVDF HFMC with VDP, was studied. The performance of the asymmetric porous PVDF HFMC and a symmetric porous PP HFMC commercialized were compared. As a result, the asymmetric porous PVDF HFMC showed higher removal efficiency of DO than that of a symmetric porous PP HFMC.
Background: The chemical characterization of metallic alloys and oxides is conventionally carried out by wet chemical analytical methods and/or instrumental methods. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is capable of analyzing samples nondestructively. As a part of a chemical quality control exercise, Zircaloys 2 and 4, nimonic alloy, and zirconium oxide samples were analyzed by two INAA methods. The samples of alloys and oxides were also analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and direct current Arc OES methods, respectively, for quality assurance purposes. The samples are important in various fields including nuclear technology. Methods: Samples were neutron irradiated using nuclear reactors, and the radioactive assay was carried out using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Major to trace mass fractions were determined using both relative and internal monostandard (IM) NAA methods as well as OES methods. Results: In the case of alloys, compositional analyses as well as concentrations of some trace elements were determined, whereas in the case of zirconium oxides, six trace elements were determined. For method validation, British Chemical Standard (BCS)-certified reference material 310/1 (a nimonic alloy) was analyzed using both relative INAA and IM-NAA methods. Conclusion: The results showed that IM-NAA and relative INAA methods can be used for nondestructive chemical quality control of alloys and oxide samples.

Chemical wastes are generated from nuclear facilities and R&D laboratories, but the uranium concentration in the final dried cake is evaluated into 11.2 Bq/g, which exceeds the exemption level of 10 Bq/g for each U isotopes, so the cake is categorized into a radioactive waste. Acid dissolution was applied to extract uranium from the waste sludge, and uranium adsorption on the dissolved solution was experimented by using IRN-77 and Diphosil bead. A large amount of resin was required to get above 80% of uranium removal, which was found to be due to a large amount of metal ions simultaneously dissolved from the precipitates with uranium. As an alternative method, acid dissolution is applied to the dewatered wet cake of the sludge, and the natural evaporation method is adopted for the dissolved solution. The uranium concentration of the dissolved solution was estimated to be 6.97E-01 Bq/ml, and the specific activity of the final waste sheets is evaluated to be 4.3 Bq/g. These results lead to the suggestion that the application of acid dissolution to the wet cake and the natural evaporation for the dissolved solution is an effective treatment method for chemical wastes containing uranium.

We suggest a facile transmission electron microscopy (TEM) specimen preparation method for the direct (polymer-free) transfer of layer-area graphene from Cu substrates to a TEM grid. The standard (polymer-based) method and direct transfer method were by TEM, high-resolution TEM, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The folds and crystalline particles were formed in a graphene specimen by the standard method, while the graphene specimen by the direct method with a new etchant solution exhibited clean and full coverage of the graphene surface, which reduced several wet chemical steps and accompanying mechanical stresses and avoided formation of the oxide metal.
In order to improve the optical Performance of green emitting phosphor for plasma display panel (PDP) application, the wet chemical method for preparing $Zn_{2-x}$$SiO_4$:xMn (xi=0.02. 0.08) phosphor was designed. The spherical phosphor particles were obtained and the size can be between 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2$\mu\textrm{m}$. The formation of phosphor, which had the willemite structure, was completed at relatively low temperature of 108$0^{\circ}C$. Also, photoluminescence Properties of the phosphors prepared were investigated under vacuum ultraviolet excitation. In particular, the emission intensity of Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:0.08Mn phosphor having the 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ of particle size was higher than that of commercial phosphor by 40%. The decay time of zinc silicate powder prepared as containing 8 mole% of manganese has been measured as 7.8ms.

The increase of using low grade ace, the unsorted mixed grade, as fibrous raw materials for the packaging paper results in the increment of fine screen reject owing to the strong tendency to reduce the slot width. Since the most of screen reject consists of undispersed fiber flake, the suitable treatment of the flake could increase the yield of ace recycling and decrease the amount of solid waste. In this work, the novel method combined the mild mechanical treatment by using Tumbling pulper with the biological treatment was developed and applied to the wet strength flake and the fine screen tail line reject originated from a packaging paper mill. The results showed the new method could provide much better efficiency for the disintegration of undispersed flake and for the recovery of fiber from the rejects. The application of the laboratory scaled-Pack pulper showed the possible separation technique for mill application by fractioning effectively the fiber from the treated solid waste.
Yttrium aluminum garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ (YAG) is an extensively used solid-state laser host material. YAG nanocrystals were synthesized using low-temperature glycol method, a modified sol-gel method performed at low temperature that consists of a mixture of salts that are mostly nitrates in an aqueous media. Single-phase nanocrystalline YAG was obtained at $850^{\circ}C$, which is a much lower temperature than with other techniques such as a wet-chemical technique. The structural characterization is done by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A crystallite size range of 20-50 nm was observed for the materials prepared at $850-950^{\circ}C$.

Vertically-aligned silicon nanostructure arrays (SNAs) have been drawing much attention due to their useful electrical properties, large surface area, and quantum confinement effect. SNAs are typically fabricated by chemical vapor deposition, reactive ion etching, or wet chemical etching. Recently, metal-assisted chemical etching process, which is relatively simple and cost-effective, in combination with nanosphere lithography was recently demonstrated for vertical SNA fabrication with controlled SNA diameters, lengths, and densities. However, this method exhibits limitations in terms of large-area preparation of unperiodic nanostructures and SNA geometry tuning independent of inter-structure separation. In this work, we introduced the layerby- layer deposition of polyelectrolytes for holding uniformly dispersed polystyrene beads as mask and demonstrated the fabrication of well-dispersed vertical SNAs with controlled geometric parameters on large substrates. Additionally, we present a new means of building in vitro neuronal networks using vertical nanowire arrays. Primary culture of rat hippocampal neurons were deposited on the bare and conducting polymer-coated SNAs and maintained for several weeks while their viability remains for several weeks. Combined with the recently-developed transfection method via nanowire internalization, the patterned vertical nanostructures will contribute to understanding how synaptic connectivity and site-specific perturbation will affect global neuronal network function in an extant in vitro neuronal circuit.

NaZSM 5 was synthesized in an alkaline medium and impregnated with cerium oxide by wet method using cerium nitrate as the source for cerium. There TGA results shows decomposition of nitrate at $200^{\circ}C$. The ceria impregnated ZSM 5 materials were designated as NaZSM 5 (X) where X is the percent ceria impregnated (3, 5, 7, 11, 19%). They were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDAX, BET techniques. XRD analysis showed decrease in intensity of the patterns with the increase in the ceria loading but crystallization of ceria to larger size is evident for 11 and 19% loading. The surface area and pore volume decreased with increase in ceria loading. The maximum adsorption capacity of NaZSM 5 (5%) is 100.2 mg/g of sorbent. The ceria impregnated NaZSM 5's were found to be regenerable, selective and recyclable.
The quantitative analysis experiment of Zn-Fe electroplated steel was carried out by means of glow discharge spectrometry. The experimental results of chemical composition and coating weight of the Zn-Fe layer were compared with those obtained by the wet chemical analysis method. It has been found that those results obtained by two different methods agreed well with each other.
