  • We present our observational attempts to precisely measure the central mass of a proto-brown dwarf candidate, L328-IRS, in order to investigate whether L328-IRS is in the substellar mass regime. Observations were made for the central region of L328-IRS with the dust continuum and CO isotopologue line emission at ALMA band 6, discovering the detailed outflow activities and a deconvolved disk structure of a size of ${\sim}87AU{\times}{\sim}37AU$. We investigated the rotational velocities as a function of the disk radius, finding that its motions between 130 AU and 60 AU are partially fitted with a Keplerian orbit by a stellar object of ${\sim}0.30M_{\odot}$, while the motions within 60 AU do not follow any Keplerian orbit at all. This makes it difficult to lead a reliable estimation of the mass of L328-IRS. Nonetheless, our ALMA observations were useful enough to well constrain the inclination angle of the outflow cavity of L328-IRS as ${\sim}66^{\circ}$ degree, enabling us to better determine the mass accretion rate of ${\sim}8.9{\times}10^{-7}M_{\odot}yr-1$.From assumptions that the internal luminosity of L328-IRS is mostly due to this mass accretion process in the disk, or that L328-IRS has mostly accumulated the mass through this constant accretion rate during its outflow activity, its mass was estimated to be ${\sim}0.012-0.023M_{\odot}$, suggesting L328-IRS to be a substellar object. However, we leave our identification of L328-IRS as a proto-brown dwarf to be tentative because of various uncertainties especially regarding the mass accretion rate.

  • Terzaghi proposed a 2D formula for arching based on the assumption of a vertical sliding surface induced in the upper part due to the downward movement of a trapdoor. The formula was later expanded to consider 3D tunnel excavation conditions under inclined sliding surfaces. This study further extends the expanded formula to consider the effects of different ground properties and inclined sliding conditions in the transverse and longitudinal directions considering anisotropic ground conditions, as well as 3D tunnel excavation conditions. The 3D formula proposed in this study was examined of the induced vertical stress under various conditions (ground property, inclined sliding surface, excavation condition, surcharge pressure, earth pressure coefficient) and compared with the 2D Terzaghi formula. The examination indicated that the induced vertical stress increased as the excavation width and length increased, the inclination angle increased, the cohesion and friction angle decreased, the earth pressure coefficient decreased, and the surcharge pressure increased. Under the conditions examined, the stress was more affected at low excavation lengths and by the ground properties in the transverse direction. In addition, The comparison with the 2D Terzaghi formula showed that the induced vertical stress was lower and the difference was highly affected by the ground properties, inclined sliding conditions, and 3D tunnel excavation conditions. The proposed 3D arching formula could help to provide better understanding of complex arching phenomena in tunnel construction.

  • As well as the strength check, fatigue life check is also mainly required for designing mooring lines of the floating structures. In general, forces which induce dynamic structural response significantly affect to fatigue design of the mooring lines. So, waves are mainly considered as the governing loading for fatigue design of the mooring lines. In this study, characteristics of the fatigue damage of the mooring lines for submerged floating tunnels (SFT) under irregular waves are investigated. For this study time domain hydrodynamic analysis is used to obtain motion of the tunnel and tension and stresses of the mooring lines under the specific environmental conditions. Also, the Rainflow-counting method, the Palmgren-Miner's rule, and S-N curves for floating offshore structures presented by DNV recommendation is applied to calculate the fatigue damage due to the fluctuating stresses. Referring to the design plactice of the tendon pipes for TLP (tension-leg platform), which is very similar structural system to SFT, it is assumed that a 100 year return period wave attacks the SFT systems during 48 hours and the fatigue damages due to the environmental loading are calculated. Following the analysis sequence, the effects of the tunnel draft, spacing and initial inclination angle of the mooring lines on the fatigue damage under the specific environmental loadings are investigated.

  • In order to predict the post-cracking tensile behavior of fiber reinforced concrete, it is necessary to evaluate the fiber orientation factor which indicates the number of fibers bridging a crack. For investigation of fiber orientation factor on a circular cross-section, in this paper, cylindrical steel fiber reinforced concrete specimens were casted with the variables of concrete compressive strength, circular cross-section size, fiber type, and fiber volumetric ratio. The specimens were cut perpendicularly to the casting direction so that the fiber orientation factor could be evaluated through counting the number of fibers on the circular cross-section. From the test results, it was investigated that the fiber orientation factor on a circular cross-section was lower than 0.5 generally adopted, as fibers tended to be perpendicular to the casting direction. In addition, it was observed that the fiber orientation factor decreased with an increase of the number of fibers per unit cross-section area. For rational prediction of the fiber orientation factor on a circular section, a rigorous model and a simplified equation were derived through taking account of a possible fiber inclination angle considering the circular boundary surface. From the comparison of the measured data and the predicted values, it was found that the fiber orientation factor was well predicted by the proposed model. The test results and the proposed model can be useful for researches on structural behavior of steel fiber reinforced columns with a circular cross-section.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in various applications due to advantages of low cost, simplicity in construction, mechanical robustness, and little environmental restriction in usage. But for the application of object recognition, ultrasonic sensors exhibit several shortcomings of poor directionality which results in low spatial resolution of objects, and specularity which gives frequent erroneous range readings. The time-of-flight(TOF) method generally used for distance measurement can not distinguish small object patterns of plane, corner or edge. To resolve the problem, an increased number of the sensors in the forms of a linear array or 2-dimensional array of the sensors has been used. Also better resolution has been obtained by shifting the array in several steps using mechanical actuators. Also simple patterns are classified based on analyzing signal reflections. In this paper we propose a method of a sensor array system with improved capability in pattern distinction using electronic circuits accompanying the sensor array, and intelligent algorithm based on neuro-fuzzy processing of data fusion. The circuit changes transmitter output voltages of array elements in several steps. A set of different return signals from neighborhood sensors is manipulated to provide enhanced pattern recognition in the aspects of inclination angle, size and shift as well as distance of objects. The results show improved resolution of the measurements for smaller targets.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated retrospectively the postsurgical facial hard tissue profile of a Le Fort I osteotomy with/without posterior impaction and rigid internal fixation to correct mandibular prognathism. After observing a difference between the two groups, this measurement was used to prepare a treatment plan for 2-jaw surgery. Patients and Methods: Thirty patients who had undergone orthognathic surgery in Pusan National University Dental Hospital were enrolled in this study. Fifteen patients were treated using a Le Fort I osteotomy with posterior impaction and mandibular setback bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and the other fifteen patients were treated without posterior impaction. The preoperative (T0), immediate postoperative (T1) and six-month follow-up period (T2) cephalograms were taken and difference between T1-T0 and T2-T2 was analyzed. Results: Both groups was FH-ABp, SNB and ANB showed significant changes in the measurement, whereas only the posterior impaction group showed a change in the SN-U1, occlusal plane, posterior facial height, surgical movement difference from the L1 and B-point. There was no significant statistical change between the immediate postoperative (T1) and six-month follow-up (T2) hard tissue analysis in the two groups. Conclusion: A Le Fort I osteotomy with posterior impaction is considerable for patients with a flat occlusal plane angle, large posterior facial height, prominent B-point, pogonion and labioversed incisal inclination if the indications are well chosen.

  • A new construction methodology has been proposed on a scientific basis to reason a rational explanation for the structure and the present configuration of Chum-Sung-Dae. This is because there is no way to otherwise explain the gap between our expectation that the people in Shilla are assumed to be and the problems, such as the use of a temporary supporting structure including falsework, the use of a conveying device for stonework and the practice of soil fill, raised when the construction method in nowadays is applied to the structure. Furthermore, it is because the questions, such as the difference of an azimuth angle between the southward opening and the square podium, the skewed circular plan in layers of the body, misalignment between neighboring layers of the body, disagreement between the inclination due to slight sidesway and the eccentricity in each layer of the circular body, perfectly aligned vertical and horizontal joints and the existence of soil fill, raised from the present configuration of Chum-Sung-Dae, also require a reasonable explanation based on scientific evidences, if any. Therefore, the proposed new construction methodology, in which the soil hill outside as well as the soil fill inside the Chum-Sung-Dae may have been utilized as a temporary scaffolding system for construction, is the highly probable one that the builders of Chum-Sung-Dae might have inevitably employed. The existence of great tombs, scattered in Hwang-Nam-Dong close to Chum-Sung-Dae, implies that the people of Shilla might have accepted the proposed new construction methodology as a natural one.

  • The numerical model of Boussinesq approximation, which is mainly used for evaluating the port calmness due to the irregular waves, has a limit of applicability of lattice size in ports such as marinas with narrow port openings of around 30m. The SWASH model controls the partial reflection according to the depth, porosity coefficient and structure size when applying the reflected wave incident on the structure and terrain. In this study, the partial reflection evaluation at the front of the structure according to the bottom shape and the shape of the structure are examined. In order to evaluate the reproducibility of the model due to the diffraction waves entering the term, the area of incidence at right angles and inclination of the structure is constructed and compared with the diffraction theory suggested by Goda et al. (1978). The experimental results of the sectional structure reflectances calculated as the depth mean show reflectances similar to the approximate values of the reflectances presented by Stelling and Ahrens (1981). It is considered that the reflected wave is well reproduced according to the control of the reflected wave at the boundary and the shape and topography of the structure. Compared with previous studies to examine the diffraction of the wave incident from the breakwater opening, the wave incidence angle and the shape of the diffraction wave are very similar to the theoretical values, but both oblique and rectangular incidence In the case where the direction concentration is small, the diffraction degree is underestimated in some sections with the crest ratio of 0.5 to 0.6.
