  • A method which can be used for evaluating slag detachability is proposed in this study. The proposed method was intended to get an absolute value for slag detachability, to give consistent value for a given welded joint, and finally to be simple to test. With a test fig made in this study, an impact by dropping a steel ball (13Kg in weight) is applied on the back side of an as-welded plate having a slag layer on the weld bead. Such impact applied forces the slag to drop off from the bead surface. In order to make a quantitative evaluation the amount of slag removed was measured with increasing the number of drops. Using this method six kinds of fluxes were evaluated in terms of the effects of flux type, basicity and weding variables on the slag detachability. As an initial result of this test, it was found that welding heat input affects the detachability significantly. Most importantly the evaluation made using the presently proposed method gives the same order of ranking as that of the actual practice done by a welder.

  • Welding is required for a connection between two different components in the nuclear fuel of a pressurized water reactor. This work relies on a mechanical experiment and analytic results to investigate the structural integrity of nuclear fuel in a situation where some components are not welded to each other. A series of lateral vibration tests are performed in a test facility, and the test structures are examined in terms of dynamic behavior. In the tests, the displacement signal at every grid structure that sustains fuel rods is measured and processed to identify the dynamic properties. The fluid-elastic stability of the structure is also analyzed to evaluate susceptibility to a cross flow with an assumed conservative cross flow distribution. The test and analysis results confirm that the structural integrity can be maintained even in the absence of some welding connections.

  • In this study, we nodestructive test based on ultrasonic test as inspection method and compared backpropagation neural network(BPNN) with probabilistic neural network(PNN) as pattern recognition algorithm of welding flasw. For this purpose, variables are applied the same to two algorithms. Where, feature variables are zooming flaw signals of reflected whole signals from welding flaws in time domain. Through this process, we confirmed advantages/disadvantages of two algorithms and identified application methods of two algorithms.

  • Laser weldability of aluminized steels of 0.8mm thick has been investigated. Test materials were cut from the commercial steels that were produced at the Coating Mill of POCOS. Test coupons for welding were prepared by using a conventional shearing machine and no additional edge treatment was peformed. Nd:YAG laser welding system was mainly applied to make weld specimens. Test results revealed that almost no spattering was observed even though the welding was peformed with no overlap joint clearance. Bead quality of aluminized steel laser weld was smooth and stable. According to x-ray inspection results, it was proved that the laser welds of aluminized steels were metallurgically defect free.

  • Inconel 617 is a solid solution, nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy with an exceptional combination of high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The combination of high strenth and oxidation resistance at temperatures over $1800^{\circ}F$ makes Inconel 617 an attractive material for such components as ducting, transition liners in both aircraft and gas turbine. In this study, the weldability and weldment characteristics of Inconel 617 are considered in GTAW associated with the two welding current and with back shielding gas using or not. After GTAW with 120A and 150A current, microstructures and hardness test, bending test, tensile test on room and elevated temperature for the determination of optical welding condition.

  • The purpose of this research is stability estimation of plant structure through classification and recognition about welding flaw in SWP(Spiral Welding Pipe). And, In this research, we used nondestructive test based on ultrasonic test as inspection method, and made up 2-axes inspection robot in order to control of ultrasonic probe on the SWP surface, and programmed to image processing and probabilistic neural network(PNN) classifying code by MATLAB programming. Through this process, we proved efficiency on the system of SWP stability Estimation.

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding is a widely used process in Industry due to its high productivity and potential to automation. The present study investigates the effects of the welding speed, arc voltage, welding current and shielding gas on the bead geometry for a low-carbon steel. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is used to choose an experimental design and perform test runs accordingly in order to produce mathematical models predicting the geometry, the hardness and the heat input of the bead as functions of the welding parameters. The direct and interaction effects of the four welding parameters are represented graphically and allow to determine an optimum set of welding parameters.

  • In this paper, an intelligent system to determine welding parameters for each pass and welding position in pipeline welding based on one database and FEM model, two BP neural network models and a C-NN model was developed and validated. The preliminary test of the system has indicated that the developed system could determine welding parameters fur pipeline welding quickly, from which good weldments can be produced without experienced welding personnel. Experiments using the predicted welding parameters from the developed system proved the feasibility of interface standards and intelligent control technology to increase productivity, improve quality, and reduce the cost of system integration.

  • The characteristics of the fume generation in a flux cored arc welding were investigated using the fume collection chamber developed. The Korean Standard concerning the method for the evaluation of the fume generation rate(FGR) was updated by the evaluation method obtained through this study. It was found that the effect of humidity in the test environment should be considered and the automatic welding method had to be employed for the purpose of the exact evaluation of the fume generation rate. The results showed that the fume generation rate was influenced by the welding parameters. The important factors were the welding current arc voltage, travel speed, and contact tip to work distance(CTWD) that affected the heat input as well as the torch angle and the shielding gas flow rate that influenced the shielding effect. The fume generation rate increased as the heat input increased and the shielding effect decreased. It was also observed that the effect of the welding current is much grater than the other welding parameters.

  • Recently companies which do not use the heavy metals such as lead, chrome, mercury to the electronic goods and alternate the materials environment-friendly are increasing. In advanced country, lead-free solder without lead is developed and soldering process almost disappeared. The lead-free solder is environment-friendly but is expensive and lack of tack and durability than lead, the improvement is necessary. To solve this problem, the welding process that uses TIG welding and the welding technology between different kind metals for lead-in wire of room lamp and base department was developed. To do this, previous room lamp manufacturing process was analysed and which process can be alternate was proposed. And the test for selection of optimal value of TIG welding parameter was done. Finally the lamp aging test and earthquake resistant test was done to check the reliability of welded room lamp.
