  • In this study, Banhasasim-tang extracts (BSTE) have an inhibitory effects on cisplatin-induced decrease of body weights in two mouse model. Cisplatin is the most widely used anticancer drug for treatment of various cancer. However, cisplatin treatment to cancer patients leads to many side effects such as nausea, vomiting and body weight decrease. BSTE has been used to decrease digestive disorders in South Korea. We hypothesize that BSTE improve the cisplatin-induced side effects in mouse models. We found that pre- and co-administration of BSTE inhibited decreases of body weights and food intake by cisplatin in mouse models. But BSTE had no synergistic effects for tumor shrinkage by cisplatin in xenograft model. Collectively, our data suggest that BSTE have great potential as a agent for having decrease effects on side effects by cisplatin in cancer patients.

  • For mass production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), high cell density cultures of Alcaligenes eutrophus by fed-batch culture under phosphate-limitation condition has been investigated. PHA accumulation by the regulation by the regulation of initial phosphate concentration could be automatically induced, and high density cell culture above 200 g/L also could be successfully produced. The production of Poly-$\beta$-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and dry cell weight increased with increasing the initial phosphate concentration. When the initial concentrations of phosphate were in the ranges of 1.5~4.5 g-PO$_4$/L, PHB and dry cell weight obtained were 83~266 g/L and 61~216 g/L, respectively, and PHB productivity was in the ranges of 1.35~3.10 g/L.h. When a mixture of glucose and propionic acid is used as carbon sources, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-poly-3-hydroxyvalerate), P(3HB-co-3HV), could be also successfully produced under phosphate limitation condition. When the mole ratio of propionic acid to glucose in the feeding solution is 0.22, a final dry cell weight of 150 g/L and a P(3-HB-co-3HV) of 90 g/L were produced. Morphological changes and size distribution of PHB granules synthesized in A. eutrophus under phosphate-limitation condition are determined by TEM during the course of fed-batch. Mean granule diameters of PHB produced are in the range of 0.36~0.39 $\mu$m, and mean cell size was elongated from 0.54~0.59 $\mu$m$\times$ 1.3~1.5 $\mu$m to 0.83~0.89 $\mu$m $\times$2.0~2.3 $\mu$m. Phosphate concentration in media did not affect size distribution of PHB granule and cell.

  • Satiety cues a feeding animal to cease further ingestion of food, thus protecting it from excessive energy gain. Impaired control of satiety is often associated with feeding-related disorders such as obesity. In our recent study, we reported the identification of a neural pathway that expresses the myoinhibitory peptide (MIP), critical for satiety responses in Drosophila. Targeted silencing of MIP neuron activity strikingly increased the body weight (BW) through elevated food intake. Similarly, genetic disruption of the gene encoding MIP also elevated feeding and BW. Suppressing the MIP pathway behaviorally transformed the satiated flies to feed similar to the starved ones, with augmented sensitivity to food. Conversely, temporal activation of MIP neuron markedly reduced the food intake and BW, and blunted the sensitivity of the starved flies to food as if they have been satiated. Shortly after termination of MIP neuron activation, the reduced BW reverted to the normal level along with a strong feeding rebound. Together our results reveal the switch-like role of the MIP pathway in feeding regulation by controlling satiety.

  • Overload vehicles have demoralizing influence upon the social overhead capital, economics of nation, traffic flow and road safe as various components. Accordingly, this study established a ubiquitous sensor network system to develop an intelligent regulation system to monitor overloaded vehicles in motion. and Unlike WIM, after detecting the axle of driving vehicles by measuring deformation of roads, this system calculates the weights of vehicles by using signals from the strain sensors installed under the road and an analysis method. Also the study conducted an simulation test for vehicle load analysis using genetic algorithm. and tested wireless sensor for USN system.

  • Composite material is widely used in the automotive industries because it has excellent mechanical properties and is possible to reduce weight due to the low density. However, there is a new obstacle to meet environment regulation like Cu less or Cu free regulation for the friction material. Although it is strongly demanded, there are few research results about that unfortunately. Unless this problem is not solved properly, it is impossible to apply composite brake system to vehicle. In this paper, a new eco-friendly friction material for composite brake system is represented to respond these regulations. To do this, friction characteristics between existing low steel friction material and new eco-friendly friction material are verified to secure performances for brake system such as effect characteristic, fade characteristic and wear characteristic. And composite brake gets the equivalent or better performance compared to a low steel friction material. Finally, this result contributes to the study of major principles for the development of eco-friendly friction material in the future.

  • In this talk, I will present a theoretical and numerical framework for self-regulation of the star formation rates (SFRs) in disk galaxies. The theory assumes (1) force balance between pressure support and the weight of the interstellar medum (ISM), (2) thermal balance between radiative cooling in the ISM and heating via FUV radiation from massive young stars, and (3) turbulent energy balance between dissipation in the ISM and driving by momentum injection of SNe. Numerical simulations show vigorous dynamics in the ISM at all times, but with proper temporal and spatial averages, all the expected balances hold. This leads to a scaling relation between mean SFRs and galactic gas and stellar properties, arising from the fundamental relationship between SFR surface density and the total midplane pressure.

  • Proliferation and differentiation of ovarian cells are regulated by gonadotrophins and various intraovarian factors, with many of their actions dependent on growth factors. Transforming growth factor-$\beta$ (TGF-$\beta$) has been reportedly involved in the regulation of ovarian follicular development. The overall objectives of the present study were to examine the influence of TGF-$\beta$1 expression in ovarian follicular development or yolk formation and to investigate the association of egg weight with ovarian TGF-$\beta$1 expression at 60 wk. Egg weights of 70 Korean Native Ogol Chicken (KNOC) were recorded from 20 to 60 wk. Ovaries were taken at 60 wk, and TGF-$\beta$1 was measured with ELISA, respectively. Based on egg weight up to 60 wk and TGF-$\beta$1 expression in ovary, the chickens were divided into high and low groups. Egg weights and follicle weight in the high TGF-$\beta$1 group were higher than those in the low groups. Also, TGF-$\beta$1 expression and follicle weight in high egg weight group were higher than those in the low groups. Taken together, the results indicate that TGF-$\beta$1 is associated with egg weight in KNOC. This association of TGF-$\beta$1 with egg weight in KNOC supports the report that TGF-$\beta$ is mainly involved in the development and differentiation of follicles in the poultry. Further studies about other endocrine factors related to yolk formation are required to fully understand the endocrine mechanism of egg weight in Korean Native Ogol Chickens.

  • Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In our case study using animal models for disease states such as obesity or hypertension, we found that, Isaria sinclairii remarkably reduced body weight and ameliorated metabolic abnormalities in Zucker and SHR rats. Genetically obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats were one animal model chosen for this study. Four groups of rats received a standard diet and were treated orally with the following test samples daily for 8 weeks: saline (negative control), ethanol extracts of I. sinclairii, hot water extract of I. sinclairii, or $Xenical^{(R)}$ (30 mg/kg, positive control). Mild reductions (6.3%) in body weight gain were observed in the groups treated with the hot water extract of I. sinclairii compared to the control after 8 weeks. Interestingly, organ weight was greatly reduced by this Dongchunghacho (I. sinclairii), in parallel with the mild reductions in body weight gain and reductions in abdominal fat (adipose tissue). Also observed was a 4.1 % decrease in the ratio of heart weight/body weight compared to the control group. As a hypertensive animal model, SHR (spontaneously hypertensive rat) and WKY (Wistar Kyoto) rats were also administered these extracts for one month. Treatment with the hot water extract of I. sinclairii caused greater reductions in body weight gain for the SHR group (10.9%) compared to the WKY group's (5.2%). Based on these results, I. sinclairii extracts contain selective action for anti-obesity activity, naturally occurring candidate for regulation of body weight increase, as demonstrated in the present study.
