A Study on Weight Control Behavior by Female Consumers Eating Life Styles (여성 소비자의 식생활 라이프스타일에 따른 체중 조절 행위에 관한 연구)

  • The study investigated the eating lifestyles of female consumers and whether they influenced weight control behavior. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the eating lifestyles of the subjects were presented four types: 'active eating life pursuit type', 'safe economical type', 'gourmet type' and 'passive negligence type'. In general, most cases were of the 'passive negligence type'. Second, weight control behavior was analyzed according to eating lifestyle. The results of the analysis indicated that the female consumers of the 'active eating life pursuit type' and 'safe economy type' had high behavior levels in each aspect of weight control attitude, subjective regulation, perceived behavior control, and behavior intention. Third, the 'gourmet type', with a strong preference for taste, and the 'passive negligence type', with fewer eating considerations in general, showed weaker attitudes towards weight control and the recognition of pressure from people around them. As such, the level of consideration for food or eating was correlated with weight control. These findings impliedy that the more active, safer, and economical women are in their general eating style, the stronger they perceive weight control issues.

Differences of Eating Behavior between the obese and normal weight boys in High school (비만과 정상체중 남자고등학생들의 섭식행동 차이)

  • The purpose of this study is to describe Eating Behavior for High school boys who are obesity using three factors(dietary restraint, disinhibition, hunger). The subjects were 200 high school boys. The convenience sample is consist of 101 normal weight boys and 99 obeses weight boys. Data were collected between Mat 1 and June 20 in 2000 and analyzed using the SAS package. The results are as follows: 1. The first hypothesis was not supported that is, the normal weight boys much more doing dietary restraint than the obese boys. 2. The second hypothesis was supported that is, the obese boys more experience disinhibition than the normal weight boys. 3. The third hypothesis was supported that is, the obese boys more experience hunger than the normal weight boys. The eating behavior of obese boys is different that of normal weight boys, The obese boys more experience disinhibition and hunger than the normal weight boys, but dietary restraint was more done the normal weight boys than the obese boys.

Patterns of Health Behavior for Weight Loss among Adults Using Obesity Clinics (비만클리닉에 내원하는 성인의 체중관리 행위)

  • Purpose: This ethnography was done to explore patterns of weight management behavior among adults using obesity clinics. Methods: The participants were 12 adults who were overweight or obese and 2 family members. Data were collected from iterative fieldwork in the obesity clinics of two hospitals. Data were analyzed using text analysis and taxonomic methods. Results: Weight management behaviors among participants varied according to the recognition of the body and motivation for weight control, Participants' behavior was discussed in the socio-cultural context of obesity. Patterns of weight management behavior among participants were categorized by focus: strategic self-oriented type including managements for the body as a social asset and for health, selective neglect type, and passive group value-oriented type including type dependent on others and managements for beauty. Conclusion: Participants' weight management behavior was guided by folk concepts of body and health. and constructed within the socio-cultural context. It is necessary for health care providers to understand physical and psychological problems arising from the repeated trials, excessive control of weight, and Western cultural discourse on beauty ideals among adults who are overweight or obese. Therefore, interventions should be tailored to address individual and community needs.

A Study on Weight Control and Dietary Life among Middle School Students: Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Behavior and Food Frequency (남녀 중학생들의 체중조절과 식생활 비교 연구: 영양지식, 식생활 태도 및 식품 섭취 빈도)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior and food frequency according to the gender and weight control attempt among middle school students in Seoul and Gyunggi-do, Korea. The subjects were divided into three groups, one with experience in attempting to lose their weight, one with experience in attempting to gain their weight and one with no experience in attempting to control their weight. Nutrition knowledge level of girls was higher than that of boys (p<0.01), but there were no significant difference according to weight control attempt. As for the scores of dietary behavior, there were no significant differences by gender but according to weight control attempt, the scores of dietary behavior of the weight loss attempt group were higher than those of the other attempt groups (p<0.01). In the food intake frequency, there were significant differences according to weight control attempt (p<0.05, p<0.01).

Health Promoting Behavior and Self-Efficacy of Normal Weight and Obese Middle School Students by Gender

  • Purpose : This study examines the differences in self-efficacy and health promoting behavior between obese students and normal weight students by gender; it tries to obtain basic data for the health guidance of obese students. Methods : Data were collected from 360 students (90 normal weight males, 90 obese males, 90 normal weight females, 90 obese females) using questionnaires about general characteristics, self-efficacy, and health promoting behavior. There were analyzed with descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation), and a x$^2$ test, ANCOVA, and a Pearson's correlation of coefficient at the 0.05 significance level by using the SAS (version 8.01) Win Program. Results : The score of self-efficacy appears that in the case of boys, obese students are significantly lower than their normal weight counterparts (F=25.85, p=<.0001), while in the case of girls there is no significant difference between the two groups (F=.01, p=.9118). The score of health promoting behavior appears that in the case of boys, obese students are significantly lower than their normal weight counterparts (F=28.61, p=<.0001), while in the case of girls there is no significant difference between the two groups (F=1.25, p=.2643). The relation of self-efficacy and health promoting behavior shows a statistically significant correlation in all cases: obese boys (r=.69, p=<.0001), normal weight boys (r=.51, p=<.0001), obese girls (r=.67, p=<.0001), and normal weight girls (r=.49, p=<.0001). Conclusions : An evaluation study needs to see whether a program to encourage the self-efficacy of obese boys can be effective in health promoting behavior or weight control in the long run. As in this study more than half of the obese girls have mild-level obesity, a follow-up study should be conducted to examine the self-efficacy and health promoting behavior between middle or highly obese students and normal weight students.

Comparison of practice of dietary guidelines and health beliefs according to stage of weight loss behavior change among male workers (성인 남성근로자의 체중감소행동 변화단계에 따른 식생활 지침 실천 양상 및 건강신념 비교)

  • This study compared levels of health and dietary behavior practices and health beliefs according to the stage of weight loss behavior change of Korean male workers. A self-administered survey questionnaire was collected from 411 male adult workers residing in Seoul, Kyeonggi, Chungcheong region. Practices of health related behavior, including smoking, drinking, exercise, work related physical activity, and dietary behavior according to dietary guidelines were evaluated. In addition, the levels of perceived benefit, perceived barrier, perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, and perceived cue to action from the health belief model were measured according to the stages of weight loss behavior change. Significant differences in BMI, level of daily exercise, and practices of dietary behavior according to dietary guidelines were observed among stages of weight loss behavior change. Subjects who were in action/maintenance stage showed a more desirable level of health behavior and health belief model variables, except perceived barrier. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that subjects with different stages of behavior change need an appropriate specific nutrition education method and material for improvement of nutrition education efficacy.

Convergence approach to weight control behavior and online clothing product shopping (체중조절행동과 온라인의류쇼핑에 대한 융합적 접근)

  • This study focused on the idea that consumers who are dissatisfied with their body form tend to be more interested in weight control behavior. This research connects this relationship with consumers' risk perception on the internet and consequent decision hesitation behavior. Empirical results extracted three factors of weight control behavior: diet, physical treatment, and medication and exercise. Weight control behavior was different by gender but not by age. Consumers who were dissatisfied with their body form were likely to do exercise, but other types of dissatisfaction (weight dissatisfaction and height dissatisfaction) were not significantly related to weight control behavior. Weight dissatisfaction influenced perceived size risk significantly when shopping online. Diet, physical treatment, and medication had significant influence on perceived size risk when shopping online. Perceived size risk had significant influence on decision delay and offline switch behavior. This study took a convergence approach, which connects consumer characteristics with online shopping behavior.

Effects of Weight Control Program on Body Weight and the Sense of Efficacy for Control of Dietary Behavior of Psychiatric Inpatients (체중조절 프로그램이 입원한 정신질환자의 체중과 식이행동 통제 효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of a weight control program on body weight and the sense of efficacy for control of dietary behavior in psychiatric inpatients. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. Data were collected from March 1 to September 30, 2007. Female mentally ill patients in closing psychiatry ward of H University Hospital participated in the study (16 persons in the experimental group and 13 in the control group). Results: The weight control program including diet therapy, exercise, education and behavior modification therapy decreased the rate of weight gain in female mentally ill patients taking atypical anti psychotics, and effectively increased a sense of efficacy for control of dietary behavior. Conclusion: Weight control program had a positive effect as a nursing intervention to decrease obesity and to increase the sense of efficacy for control of dietary behavior of psychiatric inpatients in psychiatric inpatients.

The relationship between Weight Control Behavior and Satisfaction with Fit of Apparel (체중조절행동과 의복의 맞음성 만족도 상관연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to set up an effective marketing strategy targeting college women by researching the relationship between weight control behavior and satisfaction with fit of apparel. The results showed that 1) 85.5% of the college women participated in weight control behavior, and 53.5% of them wanted to lose more than 3kg of their weight, 2) both body cathexis and fit satisfaction of college women were generally low. College women were less satisfied with their body and fit of apparel according to the increase of weight control degree. The weight control parts and unsatisfied body parts were almost matched : thigh, abdomen, hip, calf, and weight. The unsatisfied fit of apparel parts were also found to be thigh, hip, abdomen, crotch, pant length that matched each parts, 3) fit satisfaction of neckline, shoulder, midriff, hip, crotch, thigh, calf, and skirt length decreased according to the increase of weight control degree, and 4) weight control group which wanted to lose weight at neck, shoulder, arm, breast, waist, abdomen, hip, thigh, and calf also had low fit satisfaction of neckline, shoulder, armhole, sleeve, breast, waist, abdomen, midriff, hip, thigh, crotch, calf, and skirt length in clothing.

Study on the Theory of Planned Behavior applied to appearance management behavior: focused on skin care, makeup, apparel, hair and weight management behaviors (계획된 행동이론(TPB)을 적용한 외모관리행동에 대한 연구 - 피부, 화장, 의복, 헤어, 체중관리 행동을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore how the Theory of Planned Behavior applies to five appearance management behaviors and the effects of three variables - attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control on appearance management behaviors. The research was conducted by surveying 410 female adult respondents between the ages of 20 to 40 with the goal of predicting the appearance management behavior of women. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and Amos 19 in addition to Frequency analysis and path analysis. In the first case, the potential for applying appearance management theory on appearance management behavior of women was observed. The appearance management behavior performed by women was classified into five categories: skin care behavior, makeup management behavior, apparel management behavior, hair care behavior, and weight management behavior. It was determined all five behaviors could be predicted by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior. In the second case, effects of attitude related to subjective norm and perceived behavior control related to skin care behavior was statistically significant. In terms of makeup management behavior, all of the three variables were statistically significant. With regard to apparel management behavior, only subjective norm behavior was statistically significant. Concerning hair care behavior, attitude and perceived behavior control were statistically significant. On weight management behavior only attitude was statistically significant.
