Analysis of Clutter Effects in a Weather Radar (기상 레이다에서의 클러터 영향 분석)

  • A weather radar estimates Doppler frequency and width of Doppler spectrum from the received weather signal which represents the return echoes from rain or dust particles in a corresponding area. These estimates are very important parameters since they are directly related to precipitation, wind velocity and degree of turbulence. Therefore, these estimated values should be highly reliable to obtain accurate weather information. However, the echoes of a weather radar include both the weather signal and the clutter which occurred from ground reflection or moving objects, etc. The existence of the clutter in the echoes may cause serious errors in the estimation of weather-related parameters. Therefore, in this paper, models are developed to represent the weather signal and the clutter for the purpose of analyzing estimation errors caused by the strong clutter echoes. Using these models, various return echoes according to the weather signal and clutter power are simulated to analyze the effects of the clutter.

  • A weather radar extracts the weather information from the return echoes which consist of scattered electromagnetic wave signals from rain, cloud and dust particles, etc. The acquisition of accurate weather information depends on the operation environment which include the Doppler weather signal and ground clutter characteristics. Since the conventional symmetric weather Doppler model does not represent the measurements in real situations, the improved model is suggested to describe the skewness in the Doppler spectrum model. Using the suggested model, many various weather signals can be simulated to verify the accuracy of signal processing algorithms and the reliability of the extracted weather information

A Study on the Analysis of Radar System Phase Noise Effects in Clutter Cancellation (클러터 제거에서의 레이다 시스템 위상잡음 영향분석에 관한 연구)

  • Since there are very strong clutter returns in an airborne weather radar used for the detection of low altitude weather hazards, the reliable weather data cannot be extracted from the weak Doppler weather signal without cancellation of these strong clutter returns. However, the system phase noise spreads both the clutter and Doppler signal and causes the serious problems in the efficient clutter cancellation. Therefore, in this paper, the phase noise effects on the clutter and Doppler weather signal were analyzed. The system phase noise model was suggested and the effects were derived and explained using this phase noise model. It can be shown that there exists the limit in the clutter cancellation capability to improve the signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) due to the system phase noise. It may be prominent especially in the low SCR situations.

  • Recently, The detection of weather conditions and weather related hazards with a weather radar are being actively investigated based on the echo intensity and the Doppler spectrum analysis.   • Radar detection range is decreased with an increase in the noise levels and detection thresholds in adaptive CFAR of a radar signal processor to the weather clutter reflection signal in the rain. When a high-velocity plot is generated in weather clutter, what are detected are not targets but false plots. Detection opportunity is reduced by radar time resource consumption from additional confirmations regarding the false plots. In this paper, the received signals are saved using a radar-received signal storage device. Based on the analysis of the received signals from weather clutter, the influence of the rainfall reflection has been mitigated by front-end attenuation of the signal processor. The improvement in the detection performance is verified through received signal and simulation results.

  • The weather FAX machine is the one of necessary of safety navigation for ship. which is the machine which make the weather image by the receiving radio signal which is modulated using FSK method and transmitted on air by coast station. after Coast station scan the weather image and broadcast the image with black dot to 1500Hz and white dot to 2300Hz using FSK modulation. This paper implement weather fax machine using only general IBM-PC by software. By using IBM-PC we can make some good functions like print, edit, save etc. The modulated signal from SSB go into RS232C port via photo coupler not to give damage to PC. by using Timer Interrupt and RS232C serial interrupt, we can measure signal frequency and remake weather image. This paper use only IBM-PC with general SSB receiver which is widely spread on the ship. so this is very economic and possible to implement mutifunctions.

  • In some cases, the launch vehicle is fatally affected by the change of weather condition. Thus the real time monitoring of weather condition is indispensible for successful launch campaign. This paper described general characteristics of weather radar for space center. The analysis of weather radar requirements has been carried out focusing on the transmitting power, gain of antenna, half power beam width, and minimum detectable signal.

A study on GEO satellite signals in L - to Ka-band affected by Asian Sand Dust

  • This paper represents an attempt to bring together and analyses the measurement data measured by the Satellite Signal Monitoring Center in Korea and the Korea Meteorological Administration/Korea Meteorological Research Institute in close cooperation with this study team. This paper presents the signal characteristic of GEO satellite operating in frequency range 1 to 20GHz associated with Asian Sand Dust (the so-called Yellow Sand Dust). The downlink signal power (dBm) for L-, S-, C-, Ku-, and Ka-band frequencies from GEO satellites were measured in a clear weather and in Asian Sand Dust weather by the Satellite Signal Monitoring Center. The measured signal power(dBm) were compared to the total number concentration and size distribution of Sand Dust that were measured by the Korea Meteorological Administration/Korea Meteorological Research Institute and the possible correlation between these sets data were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the downlink signal level (dBm) of GEO satellite is attenuated by Asian Sand Dust. Hitherto, merger information has been reported as to the influence of sand dust on satellite communications operating in regions affected by sand dust.

Analysis of Phase Noise Effects in a Short Range Weather Radar (단거리 기상 레이다에서의 위상 잡음 영향 분석)

  • Many short range weather radars with the low elevation search capability are needed for analysis and prediction of unusual weather changes or rainfall phenomena which occurs regionally. However, due to the characteristics of low elevation electromagnetic wave beam, it is highly probable that the received weather signals of these radars are seriously contaminated by the ground clutter. Therefore, the filter removing low Doppler frequency band is generally used to mitigate this problem. However, the phase noise in a radar system may limit the removal of the strong clutter and this may cause serious problems in estimating weather parameters because of the remaining clutter. Therefore, in this paper, the characteristics of phase noise in a radar system are investigated and the effects of the system phase noise are analyzed in the improvement of signal to clutter ratio for the strong clutter environment such as a short and low-elevated weather radar.

Pilot Study on the Statistical Characteristics of a Railroad Weather-Related Accidents and Incidents in Korea (철도기상사고의 통계적 특성)

  • This paper aims to find out the statistical characteristics of the weather related railroad accidents and incidents. Data from Korea Railroad Operation Information System(KROIS) and Korea Railroad Accidents reports during 1996-2008 were used to investigate the occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles and their association with weather phenomena. The results are as follows; The occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles decrease gradually, and most of railroad accidents is a railroad traffic accidents. The amount of damages by a railroad weather-related accidents is higher than those of the railroad accidents and operation obstacles. It was also found that weather events influencing the railroad weather-related accidents and incidents are rainfall, snowfall, lightning, winds. And they caused a railroad weather-related accidents and incidents, such as railway obstruction, signal failure, and power supply failure. Therefore we need research about threshold review and a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a railroad weather-related accidents and incidents according to climate change.
