  • As the optical communication is introduced to the backbone network at first and becomes a general communication method of network, the demand of kernel parts of optical communication such as PLC(Planar Light Circuit), Coupler, and WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) element increases. The alignment and the attachment technology are very important in the fabrication of optical elements. In this paper, the driving mechanism of ultra precision stage is studied with the aim of optimal design of stage. The travel and the resolution of stage are investigated. The hysteresis of the stage is generated because of PZT actuator. The hysteresis and the inverse hysteresis are modeled in X, Y, and Z-axis motion. The input data of desired displacement to the stage according to input voltage is obtained from the inverse hysteresis equation. In the result of experiments with the input data, the errors due to hysteresis are well compensated.

  • We proposed an analysis model for a Fabry-Perot cavity constructed with a plane-mirrored optical fiber and a concave-mirrored one. We presented the analysis results calculated by inserting practical values into the equations derived. The coupling loss of the cavity and the mirror loss are the most important parameters in reducing the insertion loss of the filter. In order to build a filter of finesse 600, FSR 57 nm, and insertion loss < 3 dB, the plane-concave cavity using mirrors of loss < 0.09% should be aligned for the coupling loss to be less than 0.1 %.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • We present a weather-insensitive optical free-space communication method supporting optical packet channels. It operates optical fiber amplifiers in gain-saturation regions. When the propagation loss gets too high, it decreases the average packet rate, or the average packet length, or both, to increase the optical power level launched into the free-space. As a demonstration, we transmit $8{\times}10$ Gigabit Ethernet channels over a terrestrial distance of 2.4 km. One gain-saturated free-space optical repeater is used at the halfway point.

  • In this paper, we consider a WDM based metro ring connecting broadband access networks by using FT-TR (Fixed Transmitter-Tunable Receiver) type access nodes and a new MAC protocol for fair transmission is proposed. The basic channel access scheme is CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) and the transferred optical slot is changed to be empty slot by SS(Source-Stripping) which drops a packet from ring-rotated slot. This empty slot can be either used to send head-of-line packet in buffer or transmitted to next access node. In former cases, there is the improvement of network throughput, but latter case leads unfairness problem of transmission. Thus the proposed MAC protocol exploits the advantages form tow cases. It gives downstream access nodes chance to use empty slots and limits the unconditional usage of empty slots at upstream access nodes with probability as called p-Persistent MAC protocol. We use a numerical analysis to evaluate bandwidth efficiency and maximum node throughput and compares simulation results in terms of node throughput, fairness factor, transfer delay depending on probability. Under two different FT-TR type architectures for metro ring network the proposed MAC protocol is evaluated and compared.

  • We have fabricated and characterized MMI (Multimode Interference) coupled ring resonator with the total internal reflection mirrors and the semiconductor optical amplifier for the integration of the WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system. The TIR (Total Internal Reflection) mirrors were fabricated by self-aligned process and had losses of about 0.71 dB per mirror. Coupling in and out of a resonator was achieved using the extremely small MMI couplers. The MMI length and width used in the experiment were $119{\mu}m$ and $9{\mu}m$, respectively. The resulting FSR (Free Spectral Range) and on-off ratio were approximately 1.333 nm (162 GHz) and 13 dB, respectively.

  • Optical power splitters and/or couplers are important components for optical signal distribution between channels both in wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) systems and photonic integrated circuits(PICs). Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber, passive WDM components have to be polarization insensitivity, Compared to alternatives such as directional couplers or Y-junction splitters, splitters based on multimode interference(MMI) have found a growing interest in recent yens because of their desirable characteristics, such as compact size, low excess loss, wide bandwidth, polarization independence, and relaxed fabrication tolerances$^{(1)}$ . These devices have been fabricated in polymers, silica, or III-V semiconductor materials. A1 $\times$ 4 MMI power splitter on InP materials that were suitable for application in the 1.55-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ region$^{(2)}$ . However, the fabrication process of the structure is too complicated and the photolithography tolerance is very tight. Also, a 1 $\times$ 16 InGaAsP/InP MMI power splitter with an excess loss of 2.2dB and a splitting ratio of 1.5dB was demonstrated by using deep etching$^{(3)}$ . The deep etching of the sidewalls through the entire guide layer of the slab waveguide resulted in a number of drawbacks$^{(4)}$ . (omitted)

  • In this paper, we propose an enhanced p-cycle (preconfigured protection cycle) scheme for WDM mesh networks with QoS constraints. In the previous researches on p-cycle, it is assumed that user's connection has a hi-directional connectivity and the same bandwidth on both direction. Therefore it is difficult to apply p-cycle based link protection to uni-directional connections for multicasting or asymmetric broadband multimedia communications with hi-directional connectivity. And it didn't consider QoS of backup path. We enhanced the p-cycles to accomodate uni-directional connections for multicasting or asymmetric bandwidth communications with hi-directional connectivity. And we propose a selection procedure of p-cycle to assure QoS of backup path. We were able to reduce a required backup bandwidth by applying a uni-directional p-cycle concept to asymmetric broadband multimedia communication environment. The proposed p-cycle selection procedure is applied to the U.S. sample network to evaluate whether the configured p-cycles can support QoS constraint of working path and backup path.

  • A silicon Fabry-Perot tunable thermo-optic filter for WDM using the thin film silicon coating is proposed and experimented. The filter is implemented by using the CMP process and polishing both sides of the commercial silicon wafer with normal thickness of 100${\mu}m{\pm}$1%. The filter also has 2-layer or 3-layer dielectrics thin film coating mirror which are alternated ${\lambda}$/4 layers of $SiO_2$($n_{low}$=1.44) and a-Si($n_{high}$=3.48) for the central wavelength of 1550nm by RF sputtering. The experiment shows that FSR is 3.61nm and FWHM is 0.56nm and the finesse is 6.4 for 2-layer mirror with the reflection of 61%, and that FSR is 3.36nm and FWHM is 0.13nm and the finesse is 25.5 for 3-layer mirror with the reflection of 89%. According to thermo-optic effect, the transmitted central wavelength of 1549.73nm at $23^{\circ}C$ is shifted to 1550.91nm at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1553.46nm at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2-layer mirror, and the transmitted central wavelength of 1549.83nm at $23^{\circ}C$ is shifted to 1550.92nm at $30^{\circ}C$ and 1553.07nm at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3-layer mirror.
