  • The Internet is evolving from best-effort service toward an integrated or differentiated service framework with quality-of-service (QoS) assurances that are required for new multimedia service applications. Given this increasing demand for high bandwidth Internet with QoS assurances in the coming years, an IP/MPLS-based control plane combined. with a wavelength-routed dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network is seen as a very promising approach for the realization of future re-configurable transport networks. This paper proposes a differentiated lambda establishment process for QoS guarantees based on the differentiated MPLS service (DMS) model. According to the QoS characteristics of wavelength in optical links and the type of used Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) nodes in DWDM next generation optical Internet backbone network, a differentiated wavelength assignment strategy that considers QoS recovery capability is also suggested.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a new approach of routing and wavelength assignment algorithms, called Possible Available Wavelength (PAW) algorithm. The weight of a link is used as the main factor for routing decision in PAW algorithm. The weight of a link is defined as a function of hop count and available wavelengths. This function includes a determination factor of the number of wavelengths that are being used currently and are supposed to be available after a certain time. The session requests from users will be routed on the links that has the greatest number of link weight by using Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm. This means that the selected lightpath will has the least hop count and the greatest number of possible available wavelengths. The impact of proposed link weight computing function on the blocking probability and link utilization is investigated by means of computer simulation and comparing with the traditional mechanism. The results show that the proposed PAW algorithm can achieve the better performance in terms of the blocking probability and link utilization.

  • In this paper, we addressed the problem of upstream bandwidth in EPONs. We presented a wavelength division EPON supporting QoS in the differentiated services framework. It was shown that the bandwidth allocation by priority scheduling, under our assumptions for traffic behavior, will result in an unexpected behavior for high priority class and we suggested the use of weighted priority scheduling to alleviate this problem. Our wavelength division EPON supporting QoS allocates effectively and fairly bandwidths and wavelengths between ONUs in the differentiated services framework. Moreover, we showed better performance in terms of average and maximum end-to-end delay, as well as network throughput, utilization compared with some other algorithms. We used simulation experiments to study the performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed network and algorithm.

  • We consider a routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) ring networks, which is to maximize the established connections between nodes, given a set of usable wavelengths. We propose two new mathematical formulations of it and efficient algorithms based on branch-and-price method. Computational experiments on random instances show that cue of the proposed formulations yields optimal solutions in much shorter time on the average than the previous formulation due to Lee (1998).

  • In this study, we propose a mathematical model based on the graph theory for the wavelength assignment problem arising in the design of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) over WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring networks. We propose a branch- and -price algorithm to solve the suggested models effectively within reasonable time in realistic SDH over WDM ring networks. By exploiting the structure of ring networks, we developed a polynomial time algorithm for efficient column generation and a branching rule that conserves the structure of column generation. In a computer simulation study, the suggested approach can find the optimal solutions within reasonable time and show better performance than the existing heuristics.

  • In multifiber all-optical networks, optical amplifiers are used for amplifying multiple optical signals with different wavelengths in fibers. An optical amplifier operates when any of lightpaths passes through it. Therefore, it should simultaneously amplify as many lightpaths as possible for efficiently utilizing its power. This paper proposes a dynamic lightpath establishment scheme considering the use efficiency of the optical amplifiers and the depletion of the wavelength resources in multifiber all-optical networks. The proposed scheme provides a routing and wavelength assignment strategy that reduces both the power consumption of the optical amplifiers and the blocking probability of the lightpath establishment. Through simulation experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we consider wavelength assignment problem (WAP) in Wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) unidirectional optical telecommunication ring networks. We show that, even though WAP on unidirectional ring belongs to NP-hard, WAP can be exactly solvable in real-sized WDM rings for near future demand. To accomplish this, we convert WAP to the vertex coloring problem of the related graph and choose a special integer programming formulation for the vertex coloring problem. We use a column generation technique in a branch-and-price framework for the suggested formulation. We also propose some generic heuristics and do the performance comparison with the suggested optimization algorithm.

  • In this paper, we have proposed the new link-weight calculating function using for routing decision in WDM networks. The proposed link-weight calculating functions includes following factors those are available wavelengths per link, distance loss, total wavelengths, and limited wavelength conversion. The calculated link-weight is applied into the algorithm of routing decision in order to determine the available lightpath that qualifies user requests. The objective is to improve the performance of wavelengths assignment with fast determining the suitable lightpath by using the proposed link-weights calculating function. The analytical model of WDM switching networks is introduced for numerical analysis. The link-weight calculating function is performed. Finally, the performance of proposed algorithm is displayed with numerical results in term of the blocking probability, the probability that connection requests from users are rejected due to there are no available lightpath to be assigned for them. It is also shown that the blocking probability is varied in depending on the number of available wavelengths and the degree of wavelength conversion. The numerical results also show that the proposed link-weight calculating function is more cost-effective choice for the routing decision in WDM switching networks.

  • This paper considers the efficient design of routing path and wavelength assignment asignment in the sigle-hop WDM optical transport networks. The connecton demands between node-pairs are given and a connection must be made by only one lightpath. It is assumed that no wavelength conversion is allowed and the physical topology of the network is given. This paper proposes a method to find the routes of lightpaths and assign wavelengths to the routes, which minimizes the number of total wavelength to satisfy all connection demands. We establish a new optimization model that finds the minimum number of wavelengths. A heuristic algorithm with polynomial iterations is developed for the problem. The algorithm is implemented and applied to the netowrks with real problem size. The results of the application are compared with the commericial optimization solver, GAMS/OSL and Wauters & Demeester [8].

  • This paper deals with the routing and wavelength assignment problem (RWAP) that decides the best lightpaths for multiple packet demands for (s,t) in optical communication and assigns the minimum number of wavelengths to given lightpaths. There has been unknown of polynomial-time algorithm to obtain the optimal solution for RWAP. Hence, the RWAP is classified as NP-complete problem and one can obtain the approximate solution in polynomial-time. This paper decides the shortest main and alternate lightpath with same hop count for all (s,t) for given network in advance. When the actual demands of communication for particular multiple packet for (s,t), we decrease the maximum utilized edge into b utilized number using these dual-paths. Then, we put these (s,t) into b-wavelength bins without duplicated edge. This algorithm can be get the optimal solution within O(kn) computational complexity. For two experimental data, the proposed algorithm shows that can be obtain the known optimal solution.
