  • It is important to understand the flow characteristics such as wave and wake development around a ship for the design of the hull forms with better resistance and propulsive performance. The experimental results explicating the local flow characteristics are also invaluable for validation of the physical and numerical modeling of CFD codes, which are recently gaining acknowledgements as efficient tools for hull form evaluation This paper describes velocity and wave profiles measured in the towing tank for the KRISO 138K LNG Carrier (KLNG) model with propeller and rudder. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the effect of propeller and rudder on stern flow characteristics of the modern commercial hull form, furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for CFO validation.

  • A computational system for wave and viscous flow analysis (WAVIS) has been developed. The system includes a pre-processor, flow solvers and a post-processor. The pre-processor is composed of full form presentation, surface mesh and field grid generation. The flow solvers are for potential and viscous flow calculation. The post-processor has graphic utility for result analysis. All the programs are integrated in a GUI-launcher package. To validate the developed CFD programs of WAVIS, the calculated results for modern commercial hull forms are compared with measurements. It is found that the results from WAVIS are in good agreement with the experimental data, illustrating the accuracy of the numerical methods employed for WAVIS.

  • Dynamic equilibrium equations for finite element analysis were derived for the free field one-dimensional shear wave propagation through the horizontally layered soil deposits with the elastic half-space. We expressed Rayleigh's viscous damping consisting of mass and stiffness proportional terms. We considered two cases where damping matrices are defined in the total and relative displacement fields. Two forms of equilibrium equations are presented; one in terms of total motions and the other in terms of relative motions. To evaluate the performance of new equilibrium equations, we conducted two sets of site response analyses and directly compared them with the exact closed-form frequency domain solution. Results show that the base shear force as earthquake load represents the simpler form of equilibrium equation to be used for the finite element method. Conventional finite element procedure using base acceleration as earthquake load predicts exact solution reasonably well even in soil deposits with unrealistically high damping.

  • Numerical study on interactions of waves and currents has considerable practical interests in coastal and ocean engineering. And wave-current interactions strongly influence wave characteristics, current profiles, and forces on offshore structures. Presence of currents affects wave properties such as wave height and wave profiles. Furthermore, in case of the irregular waves, it is more complicated problem. The propose of present study, using the one-dimensional wave-current numerical model is based on the extended Boussinesq equation(Madsen, 1991) and an alternative form of wave-current dispersion relation(Mohiuddin, 1999, 2000) including wave action concept, is to simulate wave propagation in a current field including the irregular waves and discuss applicability of the model in a wave-current field.

  • The distribution of wave heights is assumed to be a Rayleigh distribution, based on the assumption of a narrow band and Gaussian distribution of wave elevation. The present study was started with doubts about the narrow band assumption. We selected the wave spectra widely used to simulate irregular random waves. The wave spectra used in this study included the Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum, Bretschneider-Mitsuyasu spectrum, and JONSWAP spectrum. The directionality of the waves was considered. The cosine 2-l type directional spreading function and mixed form of the half-cosine 2-s type with Mitsuyasu type directional spreading are considered here to investigate the effects of a directional spreading function on random waves. The simulated wave height distribution is compared with a Rayleigh distribution.

  • An ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave which propagates in one direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of ultrasonic wave is related to determination of testing sensitivity, scanning pitch and defect location. This paper investigated the directivity of ultrasonic wave, which scattered from slit defect located in heat-affected zone (HAZ) in butt joint using visualization method. The directivity of shear waves scattered from slit defect were different according to probe direction (far defect, near defect) and probe position (forward movement, maximum echo position, backward movement). The difference of directivity of reflection wave was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle probes. In the case of 2 MHz angle probe, the directivity of reflection wave was appeared sharp form because of the relation wave length and defect size.

  • The experimental method of measuring dynamic properties of structures was presented. The method is based on the flexural wave propagation characteristics. Using the method, change in structural dynamic properties due to damage is measured. The crack has much more significant impact on the strain energy than the inertial effects. From this, the sensitivity of the dynamic stiffness on the crack location is estimated by calculating the strain energy. When the wave propagates, the strain and kinetic energies shows cyclic changed over space. The crack that occurred at locations where the wave energy is in the form of the potential energy affected most significantly the wave propagation characteristics. The effects of crack location on the wave propagation were used to determine the crack location.

  • If the sea is narrowband, the Rayleigh distribution introduced by Longuet-Higgins can be used for the individual wave height distribution. However the Rayleigh distribution over-predicts the probability of high waves. Longuet-Higgins introduced alternative form of the Rayleigh distribution with an empirical constant. The wave height distribution can be fitted well by one parameter Rayleigh distribution with a proper choice of the empirical constant. The empirical constant is the ratio of the significant wave height based the time domain analysis and the spectral analysis. Here we examine wave data which contain extreme waves. Once again we confirmed that extreme wave height distribution can be modelled well by a modified Rayleigh distribution.

  • Since ultrasonic stress wave velocity varies with wood temperature and moisture content, ultrasonic stress wave could be a tool to predict wood moisture content if temperature effect could be eliminated. This temperature effect was investigated by measuring the velocities of ultrasonic stress waves transmitting through air, a metal bar and a dimension lumber at various temperatures. For air the velocity and amplitude of the ultrasonic stress wave increase with temperature, while for a metal bar and a dimension lumber those decrease as temperature increases. However all three materials showed velocity hystereses with a temperature cycle. The effect of temperature and moisture content on stress wave velocity of a dimension lumber was depicted in the form of a three dimensional graph. The plot of stress wave velocity vs. wood moisture content was well fitted by two regression equations: a exponential equation below 46% and a linear equation above 46%.
