Antioxidant properties and antioxidant activities were analyzed for water extracts and 50% and 70% ethanol extracts of the leaf of Angelica gigas Nakai. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents in water, 50%, and 70% ethanol extract of the leaf of Angelica gigas Nakai, it was found that the polyphenol contents were 18.75 mg GAE/g, 28.95 mg GAE/g, and 34.73 mg GAE/g, respectively, and flavonoid contents were respectively. The DPPH IC50 scavenging activity was 45.84 mg/mL, 36.44 mg/mL, 19.11 mg/mL, respectively, and theABTS+ radical scavenging ability (1 mg/mL) was 28.73%, 22.79%, and 12.70%, respectively. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity, 70% ethanol extract, 50% ethanol extract, and water extract 33.14%, and 4.53%, respectively. Nitrite scavenging activity, 70% ethanol extract, 50% ethanol extract, and water extract were in the order of 1 mg/mL scavenging activity, 36.43%, 34.80%, and 18.85%, respectively.
The purpose of this research relates to the development of natural preservatives. Here, Samultang ingredients (Rehmannia glutinosa, Cnidium officinale, Paeonia lactiflora and Angelica gigas) were extracted with distilled water and 70% ethanol, and the antibacterial and antioxidative activities of the extracts were tested. The highest polyphenol contents were found in the water and ethanol extracts of Paeonia lactiflora (100 g) at 843.2 mg and 721.1 mg, respectively (p<0.05). The ethanol extract of Cnidium officinale demonstrated antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes and S. aureus, and that from Paeonia lactiflora against S. aureus. The electron donating abilities (EDA) of the water extracts ranged from 67 to 84%, and those of the ethanol extracts ranged from 68 to 84% at 1,000 ppm. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities of the water extracts ranged from 47 to 50%, and those of the ethanol extracts ranged from 50 to 56% at 1,000 ppm. The nitrite scavenging abilities (NSA) of the water extracts at 1,000 ppm of the water extracts ranged from 30 to 49%, and those of the ethanol extracts ranged from 42 to 54% at pH 1.2, respectively. The NSAs of the extracts were highest at pH 1.2, and then decreased with increasing pH. The highest levels of antibacterial and antioxidant activity occurred with the water and ethanol extracts of Paeonia lactiflora, which had the highest polyphenol content among the Samultang ingredients. Over all, the ethanol extracts of the Samultang ingredients had higher activities than the water extracts. Considering the combined results, one can conclude that Samultang ingredient extracts would be useful as natural preservatives in the development of health foods.

Objectives : This study was performed to find best extraction solvent for application of Ulmi cortex to food or herbal medicine as an antioxidant only using water, ethanol and their mixtures. Methods : The Ulmi cortex extracts were prepared using water and 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% (v/v) ethanol, and were evaluated yields, total polyphenol contents, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, lipid peroxidation activities, and catechin and epicatechin contents. Results : Among the Ulmi cortex extracts, the yield was highest in water extract (8.9%) and lowest in ethanol extract (3.8%). The yield of 30% ethanol extract (8.5%) also was very high to similar with water extract. The total polyphenol content was highest in the 30% ethanol extract ($253.6{\mu}g/mg$ extract) and lowest in water extract ($109.0{\mu}g/mg$ extract). The DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest in ethanol extract (IC50, $8.53{\mu}g/ml$), ABTS radical scavenging activity was highest in 60% ethanol extract (IC50, $3.08{\mu}g/ml$), and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation was highest in 70% ethanol extract (IC50, $7.96{\mu}g/ml$). As ethanol content of extraction solvent increased from 0% to 30%, the antioxidant activities were remarkably increased whereas from 30% to 100%, the antioxidant activities were increased or decreased a little. Conclusions : The findings of the present study suggest that 30% ethanol is best solvent for extraction of Ulmi cortex, considering yield, polyphenol content, and antioxidant activities with extraction cost.

Gasohol, which is combined solution of gasoline and ethanol, is difficult to apply to the field, because it usually brings phase separation by mingling of water. We investigated phase separation by adding different concentrations of "Ethanol", anhydrous and fermentative, to "Gasolines", gasoline, gasoline base and naphtha, Placing ethanol itself open to the air, the concentrations of water are increased in length of time. The phase separation temperatures of the gasolines-ethanol solutions have dropped in the following order : gasoline, gasoline base and naphtha. When adding water to the solutions of gasolines and anhydrous ethanol, the temperatures of phase separation is higher when the concentration of water increases more. Thus, it is obvious that the water is sensitive in phase separation.
The flash point is the major property to characterize fire and explosion hazard of liquid mixtures. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form a flammable air-vapor mixture. The flash points of two aqueous mixtures, water-methanol and water-ethanol, were measured using Seta flash closed cup tester. A prediction method based on activity coefficient models, Wilson and UNIQUAC equations, was used to calculate the flash point. The calculated flash points were compared to the results by the calculating method using Raoult's law. The calculated values based on activity coefficients models were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nitrite scavenging activity of the ethanol and water extracts obtained from Hizikia fusiforme and Sargassum fulvelum using sodium nitrite under different pH conditions. The nitrite scavenging activity was appeared in all the extracts examined and it showed the highest value at pH 1.2 The ethanol extract of Hizikia fusiforme provided higher activity than the water extract of that. Ohterwise, the nitrite scavenging activity of Sargassum fulvelum ethanol extract was similar to that Sargassum fulvelum water extract. There was significant difference among concentration of extracts Hizikia fusiforme and Sargassum fulvelum. Also, nitrite scavenging activity of the extracts Hizikia fusiforme and Sargassum fulvelum decreased with higher pH condition. In addition, the activity was increaed with higher concentration of extracts Hizikia fusiforme and Sargassum fulvelum in the course of reaction time 30 minute to 3 hour.
The in vitro skin permeability of 16 drugs with a wide span of lipophilicity (log P ranging from -0,95 to 4.40) was evaluated with an ethanol/panasate 800 (tricaprylin, P-800) (40/60) lipophilic binary vehicle and an ethanol/water (60/40) hydrophilic binary vehicle with lauric acid, The skin permeability of the drugs was enhanced by the use of the ethanol/P-800 (40/60) binary vehicle or the ethanol/water (60/40) binary vehicle with lauric acid; permeation rate was increased and lag time' was decreased. The relationship between lipophilicity and skin permeation rate of the drugs showed parabolic shapes with their peaks at much greater hydrophilic range compared with other past references. In the in vivo skin absorption of theophylline using abdominal rat skin, the ethanol/P-800 (40/60)-7% (w/w) ethycellulose gel produced a good feature as a sustained-release preparation, and the ethanol/water (60/40)-3 % (w/w) HPMC gel with lauric acid showed the highest BA value. The results suggest that the lipophilicity of a drug is a main factor for prediction of the skin permeability of the drug and that the ethanol/P-800 (40/60) binary vehicle and ethanol/water (60/40) binary vehicle with lauric acid would be good candidates for clinical transdermal application of hydrophilic drugs.
Preventive effect of ginseng saponin fraction against ethanol intoxication of the liver of rats fed width 12% ethanol instead of water for 6 days was investigated. Control group was dosed 12% ethanol instead of water (free access) for 6 days and test group was dosed 0.1% ginseng saponin fraction in the 12% ethanol instead of water for 6 days. Normal rats was given only water freely. It was observed that the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and Microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS) of both control and test groups were higher than those of normal group while the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenate (ALDH) of control and test groups were lower than that of normal rats, However, the ALDH activity decrease of test group was much less than that of control groups. Electron micrograph showed that severely swollen and disrupted mitochondria and dilated and vesiculated ER can be seen in control group while dilated or vesiculated ER are very few and swollen or disrupted mitochondria can not be seen in test group. From the above experimental result, it seems that ginseng saponin might stimulate ethanol oxidation and the removal of acetaldehyde resulting in the decrease of ethanol intoxication of the liver.
In this study, extracts from Caryopteris incana Miq. (C. incana) were investigated to assess anti-oxidation, skin-whitening and anti-wrinkle activity. The total phenolic compounds of C. incana extracts with water and 80 % ethanol showed 7.69 and 12.50 mg/g respectively. Antioxidation activity of C. incana extracts was measured by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), protection factor (PF), and Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs). At concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$, the DPPH free radical scavenging activity of water and ethanol extracts were 84 and 92 %, respectively. ABTS radical scavenging activity of water and ethanol extracts were both at approximately 99 %. Antioxidant PF of water and ethanol extracts were 1.56 PF and 1.67 PF, respectively. The TBARs of water and ethanol extracts were 62 and 82 %, respectively. In anti-wrinkle and skin-whitening activity, 80 % ethanol extract had more outstanding effect than water extract at concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$. The levels of elastase and collagenase inhibitory activity related with anti-wrinkle were 58 and 89 % in ethanol extract. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity related with skin-whitening was 13 % in ethanol extract. The astringent effect of ethanol extract was 50 %. Throughout the results, C. incana extracts showed an excellent effect on anti-oxidation, skin-whitening and anti-wrinkle activity. Therefore, C. incana extracts can be used as a new material for cosmetics.
In this paper, a microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) for detecting the concentration of an ethanol-water solution in a microliter volume is proposed. A rectangular slot was added at the radiating edge of the patch to increase the sensitivity to the relative permittivity change. To improve a low input resistance caused by placing an ethanol-water solution, which is a polar liquid with high dielectric constant and high loss tangent, on the patch, a quarter-wave impedance transformer was added between the 50-ohm feedline and the patch, and the MPSA was fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate. A cylindrical container was made of acryl, and 15 microliters of the ethanol-water solution was tested from 0% to 100% of ethanol concentration at 20% intervals. Experiment results show that the resonant frequency increased from 1.947 GHz to 2.509 GHz when the ethanol concentration of the ethanol-water solution was increased from 0% to 100%, demonstrating the performance as a concentration detecting sensor.
