As environmental problems and water-shortage phenomenon become a global issue, many states look for the effective method to use water resources. So, decentralized rainwater management is recognized as a new water management system that rainwater can be infiltrated and used on-site. But it is little difficult to build a park, lake, and forest for evaporating rainwater in city because the land price of city is very high. In order to build an excellent infiltration system for a dwelling and a park in Korea, KICT has developed Linear infiltration system. This infiltration system is consist of first flush treatment, storage and infiltration, overflow control system. These elements are connected closely and working as a combined system. A storm sewer can be changed by the linear infiltration system. This study is to make design guideline using Linear infiltration system in apartment house. So ATV-DVWK-M13, FLL and present condition of Korean rainwater system were analyzed and the guidelines direction were set up. Through this study, a foundation is prepared to build the decentralized rainwater management of apartment house.

Heavy metals in water systems are being managed on the concentration-based guidelines in Korea. However, various chemicals present in water can interact with heavy metals affecting their toxicity. Such interactions are not considered in the concentration-based guidelines. This study investigated the effect of hardness and coexisting heavy metals on heavy metal toxicity to emphasize the importance of having the effect-based guidelines together with the concentration-based guidelines in water management. The toxic effects of Cd, Zn, or mixtures of Cd and Zn were studied with Daphnia magna as a test species following the standard test method at different hardness conditions (100, 200, and $300mg\;L^{-1}$ as $CaCO_3$). The toxicities of single metal solutions and mixtures showed a decreasing trend with increasing hardness, and this can be attributed to the competition between heavy metals and cations such as calcium ions ($Ca^{2+}$) that cause hardness. The predicted toxicities of the heavy metal mixtures from the single metal toxicity deviated from the measured toxicities, and the predicted toxic effects tend to be greater than the measured toxic effects suggesting that Cd and Zn are in competition. This shows the limitations of using predicted toxic effects and the needs for further studies on mixture toxicities. Overall, this study shows that the management of heavy metals in waters needs to employ the effect-based guidelines together with the concentration-based guidelines.

Korean water quality guidelines for agricultural were derived to protect agricultural water uses according to the Canadian methodology. The adverse effect of heavy metals in agricultural water was of concern due to its persistence, bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity to crop plants. The ecotoxicity data of cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc were collected for the crops grown in Korea, and used to estimate the species maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (SMATC), which corresponds to the water quality guideline. Values of irrigation per year and soil bulk density were revised to reflect the Korean situation. The estimated guideline values for cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc were 0.01, 0.5, 0.1, and 1.0 mg/L, respectively. These values are in agreement with the agricultural water quality guidelines of foreign countries and current Korean water quality standard for the protection of public health. Current water quality standards in agricultural uses were for management of public water resource, and was not prepared to protect crop plants from contaminants. The results of this study will be a basis for the designation of Korean water quality guidelines for the protection of agricultural water uses in the future.

This study is currently giving priority to developing the ship's ballast water treatment system using ozone (Ozone BWTS). The Ozone BWTS was tested in a full scale land-based mobile barge to evaluate performance according to the IMO G8 Guidelines. Test cycles using the mobile-barge were conducted in seawater and brackish water in the vicinity of the Port of Busan and Nakdong River, Republic of Korea. All tests were conducted according to the requirements of the G8 Guidelines. Test results show that the Ozone BWTS meets the Ballast Water Performance Standard contained in Regulation D-2 of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, as well as all of the operational, safety, and environmental testing requirements of the G8 Guidelines, as required for type approval of IMO. The study results show that the Ozone BWTS is capable of meeting the Ballast Water Performance Standard under Regulation D-2 of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, and also the more stringent standards being proposed under US legislation.

Water distribution systems supply drinking water to consumers' taps. Internal corrosion of metallic pipe used in drinking water distribution systems has reduced water quality and led to increased levels of toxic heavy metals such as lead, copper and nickel. These problems have been experienced to varying degrees by water utilities in many countries. North America has successfully managed and controlled pipe corrosion and corrosive water in water distribution system based on various policies, regulations and rules. Practical and engineering guidelines for evaluation of pipe corrosion and determination of treatment options are also provided to assist drinking water supplies. In addition, the corrosion mechanism in water distribution systems, such as the complex effects of physical and chemical parameters on the corrosion pipes has been improved to accurately predict corrosion rates of metallic pipes in actual water distribution systems. This paper reviews various regulations, policy statement, and treatment produces on controlling corrosion in drinking water distribution systems in US and Canada and then offers suggestion for management of corrosive water and pipe corrosion in drinking water distribution system in Korea.
The Doam lake watershed was designated as a non-point pollution management area in 2007 to improve water quality based on watershed management implementation. There have been studies of non-point source reduction with respect to the watershed management impacting the pollutant transport of the reservoir. However, a little attention has been focused on the impact of water quality improvement by the management of the dam operation or the guidelines on the dam operation. In this study, the impact of in-lake management practices combined with watershed management is analyzed, and the appropriate guidelines on the operation of the dam are suggested. The integrated modeling system by coupling with the watershed model (HSPF) and reservoir water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was applied for analyzing the impact of water quality management practices. A scenario implemented with sedimentation basin and suspended matter barrier showed decrease in SS concentration up to 4.6%. The SS concentration increased in the scenarios adjusting withdrawal location from EL.673 m to the upper direction(EL.683 m and EL.688 m). The water quality was comparably high when the scenario implemented all in-lake practices with water intake at EL.673 m. However, there was improvement in water quality when the height of the water intake was moved to EL.688 m during the summer by preventing sediments inflow after the rainfall. Therefore, to manage water quality of the Doam lake, it is essential to control the water quality by modulating the height of water intake through consistent turbidity monitoring during rainfall.
In this study, legislative and policy issues related to advancing the maintenance system of water resource facilities were presented by investigating and analyzing the degree of aging and management status of water resource facilities. Data from the comprehensive Facility Management System (FMS) operated by the Korea Infrastructure Safety Corporation were collected and used to analyze the aging of water resource facilities. Using safety grade data categorized by facility, type, local area, and grade, the ratio of dangerous facilities and the aging rate were calculated to analyze the status of water resource facilities and guidelines and manuals related to water resource facilities were investigated. Through this, four required actions to address legislative and policy issues were presented: 1) Readjusting the scope of water resource facilities and supplementing guidelines and manuals, 2) Establishing a maintenance system considering changes in disaster conditions, 3) Improving the FMS and activating standard linkage services, and 4) Establishing a facility asset management system.

The purpose of this study is to determine the amount of irrigation water for upland crop growth based on the 30 year of historical rainfall data and the water management guidelines as a reference. Five regions and ten crops were selected by their cultivation size. The changes of soil moisture contents were calculated using daily mean rainfall and irrigation demand. This study assumed that crops are irrigated when the soil moisture contents fell below of the field capacity for more than 5 days, which is the drought condition defined by RDA. The maximum irrigation water requirements was 167.2 mm for chinese cabbage during the growing season, which was followed by corn (112.0 mm), daikon (102.3 mm), spinach (66.1 mm), lettuce (56.7 mm), pepper (46.5 mm), potato (33.9 mm), sweet tomato (27.4 mm), peanut (11.5 mm) and bean (10.3 mm), The results of this study could contribute to providing valuable data to determine the capacity of irrigation facilities and to establish the emergency operation plans under extreme unfavorable weather condition (heat wave, etc.) for crop growth.
The physiological functions of drinking water in chicken were reviewed. The effects of ambient temperature, humidity, wind velocity, egg productivity, feed form, nutrients density, and breed types on the water consumption of chicken were summarized and discussed. Some guidelines for management of drinking water in commercial poultry farms were also suggested.
