  • The nuclear power plant's turbine-generator system had been suffered form some problems, such as high shaft vibration, generator casing crack, stator coil water leakage, high $H_2$ gas consumption rate. Those kinds of problems were related to high vibration. So nuclear plant decided to replace generator in order to reduce rotor high vibration and high thermal sensitivity. A series of effort to reduce turbine-generator vibration was carried out as followings, first of all, replacement of generator, analysis of turbine-generator vibration, LP B rotor shop balancing, improvement of LP B/Gen coupling run-out, improvement of Generator basement and field balancing. Finally the nuclear turbine-generator's shaft vibration was reduced below $60{\mu}m$ from over $200{\mu}m$ which is very excellent vibration in nuclear turbine-generator in Korea.

  • Recently, as construction market scale is getting bigger and transportation industry is developing, the underground structure construction such as subway, tunnel (excavation box) or shield tunnel structure is becoming more diverse, and its demand is gradually increasing. However, for the concrete structures constructed underground, the water leakage is occurred due to the expansion joint and construction joint, or movement, uneven settlement, excessive load and vibration during application causing cracks. Many waterproofing method and materials are used in jobsites, but areas such as underground railroad and subway that has movement and vibration at all times, the ability of waterproofing layer is declined causing repetitive water leakage due to crack, erosion and separation, which is a vicious cycle. Therefore, this study evaluates the responsiveness to a movement for adhesive/flexible waterproofing material that can cope with the vibration and the movement of the structure. Also to recommend a waterproofing technology that can cope with structure movement through examples of actual jobsite applications such as subway and tunnel where there are constant movement and vibration.

  • After heavy rainfall, It was occurred massive plane failure along bedding plane of shale in the center of rock slope. It was observed filling material and trace of underground water leakage around of the slope. We tried to find the cause for slope failure, and the result of examination showed that primary factors of the failure were low shear strength of clay filling material and water pressure formed within tension crack existed in the top of the slope. In this research, in order to examine the features of shear strength of filled rock joint, shear test of filled rock joint was conducted using of artificial filling material such as sand and clay..Also we made an investigation into the characteristics of shear strength with different thickness of filling materials.

  • Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the effect of heavy metal contamination on neighboring environment in case a dam is constructed by using rockfill materials contaminated by heavy metals. The numerical simulation carried out in this research includes both subsurface flow and contaminant transport in the inside of the CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam), using two commercial programs, SEEP2D and FEMWATER. The three representative cases of scenarios were chosen to consider a variety of cases occurring in a dam site; (1) Scenario 1 : no crack in the concrete face slab, (2) Scenario 2 : a crack In the upper part of face slab, and (3) Scenario 3 : a crack between plinth and face slab in the lower part of face slab. As a result of seepage analysis, the amount of seepage in scenario 2 was calculated as $14.31\sim14.924m^3/day$ per unit width, corresponding to the 1,000 times higher value than that in other scenarios. Also, in the simulation of contaminant transport by using FEMWATER, specified contaminant concentration of 13 ppb in main rockfill zone was set to consider continuous leakage from the rock materials. Through the analysis of contaminant transport, we found that elapsed times to take for the contaminant concentration of about 2 ppb to arrive at the end of a dam are as follows. Scenario 1 has the elapsed time of 55,000 years. In Scenario 2. it is 50 years. Finally, scenario 3 has 27,000 years. The rapid transport of the contaminant in scenario 2 was attributed to greater seepage flow by 500 times than other scenarios. Although, in case of upper crack in the face slab, it was identified that the contaminant might transport to the end of a dam within 100 years with about 2 ppb concentration, however, it happened that the contaminant was hardly transported out of the dam in other scenarios, which correspond to either no crack or a crack between plinth and face slab. In conclusion, the numerical analysis showed that the alternative usage of the contaminated sand and gravel as the dam embankment material can be one of the feasible methods with the assumption that the cracks in a face slab could be controlled adequately.

  • According to increase of massive concrete structures, Thermal crack done by heat of hydration have been increased in a process of the execution. In case of a subway concrete box structure, thickness of structures are almost over 1 meter, and penetrating crack by external restraint takes a bad effect on the durability with a water leakage and deterioration in especially concrete wall. A try of shortening a constructing period often occurs as subway is generally constructed according to a road to decrease a traffic jam. The research proposes executing method by skipping one block as a plan of shortening a constructing period and investigate an influence on thermal cracking control. Additionally, sensitivity analysis is accomplished by changing a height of a concrete wall, and concrete placing and air temperature met with a field condition.

  • Various pipes are buried in the city as needed, such as water pipes, gas pipes and hydrogen pipes. As the time passes, buried pipes becomes aged due to crack, etc. these pipes has the risk of accidents such as explosion and leakage. To prevent the risks, many pipes are repaired or replaced, but the location of the pipes can also be changed. Failure to identify the location of the altered pipe may cause an accident by touching the pipe. In this paper, we propose a method to detect buried pipes by gathering the GPR images by using GPR and Learning with Faster R-CNN. Then experiments was carried out by raw data sets and data sets augmentation applied to increase the amount of images.

  • This study used HILS to test an expansion joint, which is vulnerable to the water hammer effect. The operation data for the HIL simulator was the length rate of the expansion joint by the water hammer, which was used for life prediction based on the vibration durability. For the vibration durability test, the internal pressure of the expansion joint was assumed to be a factor of the durability life, and the lifetime prediction model equation was obtained by curve fitting the lifetime data at each pressure. During the test, the major failure modes of crack and water leakage occurred on the surface of the bellows part. The lifetime prediction model typically follows an inverse power law model. The pressure is a stress factor, and the model is effective in only a specific environment. Therefore, another stress factor such as temperature will be added and considered for a mixed lifetime prediction model in the future.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the physical properties of visible light curing Glass Ionomer cement for restorative esthetic filling. The control group was the autopolymerizing GC Fuji II Glass Ionomer cement (2.2: 1 P/L ratio) and the experimental groups were made by following procedure. To induce the polymerization by visible light, the powder of GC Fuji II GI cement and the liquid of Vitrabond for base & liner were mixed in an amalgam capsule with 2.5:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1 P/L ratio (% wt/wt). After fabrication of specimens, compressive strength, fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray Diffraction, water-leachable content, marginal leakage and surface roughness were studied. The results were as follows: 1. Only experimental No. 1 group (visible light curing) showed less compressive strength than control group 1 hour after curing. Strength was increased with aging in all groups, so the compressive strength of light curing groups was no less than that of autopolymerizing group after 3 weeks. 2. Experimental No.3 group (visible light curing) was inferior to No.2 group (visible light curing) in fracture resistance but light curing groups were more resistant to fracture than autopolymerizing group and showed ductile fracture pattern as compared with the brittle fracture pattern of autopolymerizing group. 3. From scanning electron microscopic image, various sized unreacted powder particles, surrounded by silica gel, were embedded in polysalt matrix. Light curing groups showed little crack and more dense unreacted particles than autopolymerizing group. 4. From X-ray diffraction analysis, GC Fuji II Glass Ionomer cement powder and all groups showed glassy appearance but light curing groups seemed to be more intensive in crystaline than autopolymerizing group. S. The most significant dissolution was shown in early setting period in all group. Light curing groups were dissolved less than autopolymerizing group. 6. Marginal leakage was not different significantly in case of cavity margin composed of same tooth structure (ex. only enamel margin, only dentin margin) but much more leakage was shown in dentin/cementum margin than enamel margin. In only case of only enamel margin, light curing groups were superior to autopolymerizing group. 7. All groups showed relatively smooth surface, which irregularity was less than $1{\mu}m$. Light curing groups were smoother than autopolymerizing group.
