  • In this study, as part of securing related data, water droplets were dropped on the upper part of the wooden board for flooring in an environment such as floor heating, and the degree of absorption according to the surface temperature change was tested. The test results showed that the contact angle of the surface was low (25℃→40℃) or the droplet was absorbed into the small plate and disappeared. The contact angle of the OSB and MDF was decreased within 30 minutes, but the surface water droplet was maintained longer than the plywood. This is because the surface is coated with hydrophobicity unlike the plywood, but moisture absorption in the cross section after the second processing will not be prevented and it will lead to defect occurrence problem.

  • A hydrophobic surface increases the contact angle between water and cement paste. There are two methods to increase water contact angle, i.e. lowering the surface energy and adjusting the surface roughness of concrete. The hydrophobicity of concrete can be quantitatively evaluated according to the chemical and physical properties of the solid surface. So far, researches have shown the chemical properties of hydrophobic concrete, however it has not covered how to control surface. This study demonstrated the hydrophobic cement paste prepared by low-resolution molds printed with a 3D printer that exhibit rough surface. Thus, we presented the most hydrophobic characteristics of mold.

  • To investigate the characteristics of water droplet on the gas diffusion layer from both top-view and side-view of the flow channel, a rig test apparatus was designed and fabricated with prism attached plate. This experimental device is used to simulate the growth of single liquid water droplet and its transport process with various air flow velocity and channel height. The contact angle hysteresis and height of water droplet are measured and analyzed. It is found that droplet tends towards to be instable by decreasing channel height, increasing flow velocity or making GDL more hydrophobic. Also, the simplified force balance model matches with experimental data only in a restricted range of operating conditions and shows discrepancy as the air flow velocity and channel height increases.

  • This paper reports a new fabrication method of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microlenses with various curvatures by using a water-based mold. The hydrophobic surface of Polypropylene (PP) substrate was modified by corona discharge using tesla coil to have hydrophilic surface. Then hydrophilic surface of PP substrate takes hydrophobic recovery to have various contact angles from less than $25^{\circ}$ to about $84^{\circ}$. By using the water droplets with various contact angles as replica molds for PDMS process, we could obtain PDMS microlenses with various curvatures.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength of luting cements used with implant retained restorations on to titanium specimens after different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred twenty disc shaped specimens were used. They were divided into three groups considering the surface treatments (no treatment, sandblasting, and oxygen plasma treatment). Water contact angle of specimens were determined. The specimens were further divided into four subgroups (n=10) according to applied cement types: polycarboxylate cement (Adhesor Carbofine-AC), temporary zinc oxide free cement (Temporary CementZOC), non eugenol provisional cement for implant retained prosthesis (Premier Implant Cement-PI), and non eugenol acrylic-urethane polymer based provisional cement for implant luting (Cem Implant Cement-CI). Shear bond strength values were evaluated. Two-way ANOVA test and Regression analysis were used to statistical analyze the results. RESULTS. Overall shear bond strength values of luting cements defined in sandblasting groups were considerably higher than other surfaces (P<.05). The cements can be ranked as AC > CI > PI > ZOC according to shear bond strength values for all surface treatment groups (P<.05). Water contact angles of surface treatments (control, sandblasting, and plasma treatment group) were 76.17° ± 3.99, 110.45° ± 1.41, and 73.80° ± 4.79, respectively. Regression analysis revealed that correlation between the contact angle of different surfaces and shear bond strength was not strong (P>.05). CONCLUSION. The retentive strength findings of all luting cements were higher in sandblasting and oxygen plasma groups than in control groups. Oxygen plasma treatment can improve the adhesion ability of titanium surfaces without any mechanical damage to titanium structure.

  • This report explains the intervessel pit dimension of Populus tomentiglandulosa and its role in embolism repair according to proposed mechanism by Zwieniecki and Holbrook, 2000. It was found that mean contact angle ( ) of water droplets on the inner surface of vessels was $56^{\circ}$. Openings into the bordered pits were typically elliptical. The angle of the bordered pit chamber ($2{\alpha}$) was found $142.17^{\circ}$. From the capillary equation $Pmax\;=\;Gcos\;(\;+{\alpha})$, it was found that mathematically the maximum pressure 0.08MPa created by pits, can be employed to force the air within the embolized vessel into solution.

  • The current paper describes a simpler ground-type, single-plate electrowetting configuration for droplet transport in digital microfluidics without performance degradation. The simplified fabrication process is achieved with two photolithography steps. The first step simultaneously patterns both a control electrode array and a reference electrode on a substrate. The second step patterns a dielectric layer at the top to expose the reference electrode for grounding the liquid droplet. In the experiment, a $5{\mu}m$ thick photo-imageable polyimide, with a 3.3 dielectric constant, is used as the dielectric layer. A 10 nm Teflon-AF is coated to obtain a hydrophobic surface with a high water advancing angle of $116^{\circ}$ and a small contact angle hysteresis of $5^{\circ}$. The droplet movement of 1 mM methylene blue on this simplified device is successfully demonstrated at control voltages above the required 45 V to overcome the contact angle hysteresis.

  • Hydrophilic $SiO_2$ layers were obtained by the atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment. Superhydrophobic $SiO_2$ layers were first deposited by the electrospray deposition method. The electrospunable solution that was prepared based on the solgel method was sprayed on Si (100) substrates. The surface of the electrosprayed $SiO_2$ layers consisted of the agglomeration of nano-sized grains, which led to a very high roughness and revealed a very high contact angle to water droplets over $162^{\circ}$. After having been exposed to the atmospheric $Ar/O_2$ plasma, the observed superhydrophobicity of the $SiO_2$ layers were greatly changed: a dramatic variation of the water contact angle from $162^{\circ}$ to $3^{\circ}$, namely realization of superhydrophillicity. Interestingly, the surface microstructure was almost preserved. According to the XPS analysis, it is more likely that thanks to the plasma exposure, the surface of $SiO_2$ layers will be cleaned in terms of organic species that are hydrophobic-inducing, consequently leading to the hydrophilic nature observed for the plasma-exposed $SiO_2$ layers.

  • In this study, the effect of properties of gas diffusion layer (GDL) on the performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was investigated using the numerical simulation. The multi-phase mixture ($M^2$) model was used to calculate liquid water saturation and oxygen concentration in GDL. GDL properties, which were contact angle, porosity, gas permeability and thickness, were changed to investigate the effect of GDL properties on the performance of PEMFC. The results demonstrated that performance of PEMFC was increased with increasing contact angle and porosity of GDL, but decreased with increasing thickness of GDL. The liquid water saturation was decreased but oxygen concentration was increased at the GDL-catalyst layer interface, because the mass transfer resistance decreased as the porosity and contact angle increased. On the other hands, as the thickness of GDL increased, pathway for liquid water and oxygen gas became longer, and then mass transfer resistance increased. For this reason, performance of PEMFC decreased with increasing thickness of GDL.

  • Purpose: The physical and optical characteristics of hydrophilic tinted contact lens containing titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles and the basic hydrogel contact lens material containing 4-iodoaniline were examined. In this study, the utility of titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles as a UV-blocking material for ophthalmologic devices were investigated by measuring the UV transmittance of the produced polymer. Also, titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles only without the addition of 4-iodoaniline in primary contact lens materials by copolymerizing two groups were compared. Methods: For manufacturing hydrogel lens, HEMA, MA, MMA, 4-iodoaniline and a cross-linker EGDMA were copolymerized in the presence of AIBN as an initiator. Also, the titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles was used as additive. After polymerization the physical properties such as water content, refractive index, contact angle and spectral transmittance of produced contact lenses were measured. Results: Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized material showed that the water content, refractive index, UV-B transmittance and contact angle were in the range of 35.01~38.60%, 1.4350~1.4418, $34.15{\sim}57.25^{\circ}$ and 1.0~10.0%, respectively. Titanium silicon oxide nanoparticles is not used as an additive in the experimental group, the results of the measurement showed that the water content, refractive index, contan angle and UV-B transmittance of the hydrogel lens polymer was 34.00~36.80%, 1.4378~1.4420, $40.15{\sim}60.16^{\circ}$ and 1.8~25.0%, respectively. Conclusions: Also, the transmittance for UV light was reduced significantly in combinations containing titanium oxide nanoparticles.
