The Fabrication of Artificial Fine Aggregates Using Stone Sludge and Spent Bleaching Clay

  • Artificial fine aggregates (denoted AFA) were fabricated using spent bleaching clay (denoted SBC) generated from processed vegetable oil and stone sludge (denoted SS) produced from crushed aggregate manufacturing materials for use as functional construction materials. Each raw material was crushed to particle size finer than $150{\mu}m$, and fine spherical pellets of approximately 1 ~ 4 mm in diameter were prepared by a pelletizing process. The physical properties of the AFA were measured with different types of sintering equipment. A new type of vertical furnace that sinters fine aggregates in a fluidized bed at high temperatures was designed and tested. AFA sintered in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.5g/cm^3$ and a water absorption of 16%. AFA sintered in the vertical furnace at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.9g/cm^3$ and water absorption of 8.5%. The bulk density of the AFA sintered in the vertical furnace showed a bulk density 27% higher and water absorption 47% lower than those of AFA sintered in the rotary kiln.

Bloating Mechanism of Lightweight Aggregate with the Size

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the bloating mechanism of artificial lightweight aggregates with different sizes (ESA, effective surface area). Aggregates were produced using hard clay, stone sludge, and a bloating agent in order to observe the effect of the gradation of the artificial lightweight aggregates. Kerosene and amorphous carbon were used as bloating agent. The particle size of the produced aggregate ranged from 3 mm to 9 mm. With regard to the amount of bloating agent to be used, 2 ~ 6 parts by weight were used. The specific gravity, absorption rate, and the type of aggregates produced by rapid sintering at $1075{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ were determined. Microstructures were observed. When ESA had a value of 1 or below, kerosene, which has a high burning rate, was found to be advantageous for use as a bloating agent. When ESA had a value of 1 or above, carbon, which has a relatively low burning rate was found to be an advantageous bloating agent. It is thought that kerosene is more advantageous, as ESA decreases, for the production of aggregates having low water absorption rate.

  • This study examines the performance of the pre-treatment process system to use CGS, a by-product generated in IGCC, as a concrete fine aggregate for construction materials, on the quality of CGS fine aggregate. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that the quality of fine aggregates of CGS can be improved at both density, absorption rate, and 0.08mm body passage amount after the hydroelectric screening process using water as a medium during the pretreatment process. It is believed that it can be used as basic data for national standard certification of CGS fine aggregates in the future.

  • It is necessary to generalize the use for structural ALA Concrete in our country, as increasing in the need for the development of ALA and the use of ALA Concrete which is related with the diminution of the self load and foundation section of structure responding to the realistic requirement against the decrease of natural aggregate and the high-rising and large-sizing of structures. This little study, therefore intended to help in the mixing design of concrete by considering the fundamental properties of ALA Concrete used with expanded clay, which is considered by acopting the experimental factors such as unit cement content, water cement ratio and the rate of fine aggregate. By considering the results of this experiment, it has difficulty in getting expected slump with the unit water content of normal concrete because of the large absorption of lightweight aggregate, and because the weight of unit volume and specific gravity ALA Concrete are small it appears that the strength and Elastic Modulus of that are small too and that it is more ductile than normal concrete.

  • Previous study on recycled aggregate(RA) has largely been limited to the manufacture of nonstructural-grade concrete due to undesirable physical properties of them such as, high water absorption leading to high water demand of concrete. The restriction seriously limits its market and consequently diminishes the use of RA as a construction material. This paper presents the mechanical properties of recycled concrete substituted by both waste foundry sand(WFS) and recycled coarse aggregate replaced with fine and coarse aggregate concurrently. The result shows that the compressive and tensile strength decrease with the increment of substitution ratio of RA and WFS while bending strength of RA concrete increase.

Effect of Aging Process to Use Steel Slag for Concrete Aggregate

  • Compared with the blast furnace slag, steel slag has the expansibility due to the reaction with water and free CaO. Therefore it is specified in Standard Specification for Concrete in Korea that steel slag aggregate must not be used in concrete. So it is unusual to use steel slag aggregate in concrete. In this study steel slag aggregate processed by several aging process was comparatively satisfied with fundamental properties as concrete aggregate, which are specific gravity, absorption, unit weight, percentage of solids and abrasion value etc. And chemical analysis is observed to understand the effect of aging process in steel slag aggregate. When the strength is measured, it is found that the concrete replacing crushed stone with steel slag aggregate had a little problem without sufficient aging process

Compressive Strength and Acid-Resistant of Polymer Concrete Using Redispersible Polymer and Blast Furance Slag Powder (재유화형 분말수지와 고로 슬래그 미분말을 혼입한 폴리머 콘크리트의 압축강도 및 내산성)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the compressive strength and acid-resistant of polymer concrete using redispersible polymer powder(RPP) and blast furnace slag powder(BSP). Material used were ordinary portlant cement, recycled coarse aggregate, natural fine aggregate, redispersible polymer powder and blast furnace slag powder. The main experimental variables were the substitution ratio of redispersible polymer powder and blast furnace slag powder, when the substitution ratios of RPP were 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6%, and those of BSP were 10%. The compressive strength and acid-resistant of polymer concrete using RPP and BSP were compared with those of ordinary concrete(Basis). When the substitution ratio of RPP was 1%, at age of 28 days, the compressive strength were more higher than those of Basis by 24%, and it was decreased with increasing the RPP content, respectively. Also, the water absorption ratio was decreased with increasing the RPP content. But, the acid-resistant was improved with increasing the RPP content.

  • This paper is concerned chiefly with the method of porous foam manufacture using basalt stone powder sludge. The hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) of bloating agent has lots of problems to manufacture porous lightweight aggregate due to fast reaction rate with cement or calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$). The $H_2O_2$ injecting method using nozzle for manufacturing porous lightweight aggregate is proposed, in this study. This method is to inject $H_2O_2$ at the pressure of 10 MPa on upper side of slurry mixing materials such as stone powder sludge and quick-lime(CaO) by injector. The specimen was dried in furnace at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and cured at ambient temperature for 30 days. We analyzed the characteristics including specific gravity and water absorption. The experiments were found that the porous foam has low specific gravity, high water absorption and uniform distribution of porous more than manufactured foam by general bloating methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to efficiently treat the sewage sludge discharged from sewage treatment plants and evaluate the feasibility of the manufacture of lightweight aggregates(LWA) using a large quantity of sewage sludge. Sintered lightweight aggregate from sewage sludge is experimentally manufactured with various mass ratios of clay to sewage sludge by a pilot plant, and is tested for density, water absorption and crushing value. Their physical properties are compared to those of a commercial sintered lightweight aggregate. As a result, an experimentally manufactured lightweight aggregate is similar or superior in physical properties to the commercial lightweight aggregate. The manufactured lightweight aggregate could be used for structural concrete and non-structural concrete.

Influence of Mix Factors and Mixing Ratio of Aggregate on the Strength and Water Permeability of Porous Concrete (포러스 콘크리트의 배합요인 및 골재 혼합비율이 강도 및 투수성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Porous concrete having continuous voids is gaining more interest as an ecological material. It has several useful functions such as water and air permeability, sound absorption, etc. Its strengths are considerably lower than those of conventional concrete due to the large and continuous voids in it. This study has been carried out to investigate the influence of mix factors and mixture proportion of aggregate on the strengths and water permeability of porous concrete. And it has been carried out to investigate the evaluation of void of porous concrete by the ultra-sonic pulse velocity. The results f this study are as follows: 1) The theoretical void ratio has greater influence than any other factor on the strengths and water permeability of porous concrete. And it is a little affected by the replacement proportion of silica-fume and mixture proportion of aggregate. 2) Because the coefficients of correlation between the void ratio and ultra-sonic pulse velocity were relatively high, it will be possible that the void ratio is predicted by the ultra-sonic pulse velocity.
