  • This study investigates the metal adsorption properties of poly (lactic acid)-g-acrylic acid (PLA-g- AAc) synthesized by UV irradiation method. The properties including degree of grafting, water content, and ion exchange capacity (IC) strongly depend on the critical experimental factors such as UV intensity and AAc concentration. Under the optimized condition, the maximum degree of grafting, the IC value, and water content are 28%, 1.13 meq/g, and 38%, respectively. The synthesized ion exchanger shows strong capacity of adsorption for divalent metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Co^{2+}$, and greater selectivity of adsorption for $Cu^{2+}$.

  • In order to improve resistant properties of water-borne acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives(PSAs) for automobiles, this study was carried out. Removable PSAs for automobiles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of monomers, n-butyl acrylate(BA), n-butyl methacrylate(BMA), acrylonitrile(AN), acrylic acid(AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA), and AA and 2-HEMA could act as functional monomers for crosslink. Emulsion polymerization was carried out in a semi-batch type reactor. Water resistance, heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance were examined. As a result, water resistance increased with the amount of BMA, however, the effect of BMA content on the water resistance was insignificant at a range of over 14 wt%. The water resistance also increased with the amount of functional monomers, AA and 2-HEMA. The prepared PSAs satisfied all the standard for automobiles except heat resistance. However, the heat resistance comes nearly up to the standard. Also, acid resistance, alkali resistance and smoke resistance of the prepared PSAs satisfied with the standard.

  • The acute toxicity of orally administered poly(sodium acrylic acid-acrylic acid), powerfully water-absorbent polymer, was el'aluated in Sprague-Dawley rats and feR mice. Rats and mice aging 6 weeks were gavaged with 0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.4, 6.7, or 10 g of poly(sodium acrylic acidacrylic acid)/kg in com oil. No animal died by treatment and any toxic symptom was not observed in the treated animals during 2 weeks. The body weight of the treated animals was not significantly different from the controls. The results of macroscopic examination on the organs of the treated animals revealed no abnormal findings. Therefore, it was concluded that poly(sodium acrylic acidacrylic acid) was practically non-toxic when it was orally administrated to rats and mice up to 10 g/kg, and its $LD_{50}$ was evaluated more than 10 g/kg in rats and mice.

  • In this study, chitosan obtained after varying extents of deacetylation (i.e., 10%, 30%, and 47%) was employed to introduce antibacterial properties to chitin. The deacetylation reaction completion, wherein the amino group content of chitin was reduced, was ascertained from the FT-IR and NMR analyses. The 47%-deacetylated chitosan exhibited superior antibacterial properties against Bacillus in a disk diffusion test. To further improve these properties, chitosan derivatives were grafted by acrylic acid and acrylamide. The varying concentrations of carboxyl groups, primary amines, and -CH2-CH2- with increasing acrylic acid and acrylamide contents were determined by FT-IR and NMR analyses. The enhanced antibacterial properties of the chitosan derivatives, owing to the increased acrylic acid and acrylamide contents, were revealed by the disk diffusion test. In particular, the derivatives with 1.3% acrylic acid and acrylamide showed the highest antibacterial activity, the bacterial reduction rate against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli being 99.9%, as observed through the ASTM E2149 standard test.

  • The viscosity for hi-solid pressure sensitive adhesive to improve water soluble low viscosity pressure sensitive adhesive polymerized using seeded polymerization. While seed binder polymerizing it produces an optimum polymerization condition, and acrylic acid and seed binder concentration changed were measurement of viscosity variation and adhesive power at the substrate (SUS420J) as flowing results. In adhesive polymerization, seed binder concentration 7 wt%/monomer was recovered 60% of solid content, 2,100 cps of low viscosity and clear adhesive film. When acrylic acid content was 4 wt%/monomer, it was turned excellent adhesive power and holding power.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of paracetic acid (PAA) and ozone disinfection on the tensile bond strength (TBS) of silicone-based resilient liners to acrylic resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred and twenty dumbbell shaped heat-polymerized acrylic resins were prepared. From the mid segment of the specimens, 3 mm of acrylic were grinded off and separated parts were reattached by resilient liners. The specimens were divided into 2 control (control1, control7) and 4 test groups of PAA and ozone disinfection (PAA1, PAA7, ozone1 and ozone7; n=10). While control groups were immersed in distilled water for 10 min (control1) and 7 days (control7), test groups were subjected to PAA (16 g/L) or ozone rich water (4 mg/L) for 1 cycle (10 min for PAA and 60 min for ozone) per day for 7 days prior to tensile tests. Measurements of the TBS were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS. Adhesive strength of Mollosil decreased significantly by application of ozone disinfection. PAA disinfection had no negative effect on the TBS values of Mollosil and Molloplast B to acrylic resin. Single application of ozone disinfection did not have any negative effect on TBS values of Molloplast B, but prolonged exposure to ozone decreased its adhesive strength. CONCLUSION. The adhesion of resilient liners to acrylic was not adversely affected by PAA disinfection. Immersion in ozonated water significantly decreased TBS of Mollosil. Prolonged exposure to ozone negatively affects adhesion of Molloplast B to denture base materials.

  • In order to enhance the actuation force of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) made with the acrylic copolymer of fluoroalkyl methacryate, acrylic acie, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), the hydroxy group of HEMA was corsslinked with 1,3-diethoxy-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane. The water uptake was reduced and the mechanical strengths and the actuation force of the membrane was improved by crosslinking. However, current and deformation responses of IPMC were decreased by crosslinking.

  • DMA-co-DAMA were synthesized from 2-diethylaminoethyl metacrylate and dodecyl-metacrylate containing long chain hydrocarbon group with hydrophilic and hydrophobic radicals. To facilitate water emulsification, acrylic copolymer was cationized by acetic acid to produce acetated acrylic copolymer. The structures of the synthesized copolymer and acetated copolymers were confirmed by IR, NMR, and molecular weight was measured by GPC, and C. H. N elemental analysis. Acetated acrylic copolymers were perfectly emulsified in water and showed increased emulsion stability. Polymer dispersion for cement modifier(PDCM-PDD) was prepared by blending of the guaternized acrylic copolymer synthesized above sodium silicate sodium gluconate oleic acid and triethanol amine. The result with prepared polymer dispersion of cement modfier was examined, and it was found that excellent waterproffing effect; Water permeability ratio is 0.44 under the water pressure of $100g/cm^2$ and 0.55 under $3kg/cm^2$, and water absorption ratio is 0.36~0.47 and 1.02 compressive strength ratio at mixed ratio of water/PDCM-PDD is 45 times.

  • The ion exchange membranes prepared from the reaction between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) which is known as the good methanol barrier in pervaporation membrane processes and sulfo-succinic acid (SSA) was used as the basic membranes. In order to improve the ion exchange capacity, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was added to this ion exchange membranes. The methanol permeabilities, ion conductivities, water contents and ion exchange capacity were measured for the resulting membranes with varying PAA contents. In general, methanol permeability and ion conductivity of PVA/SSA/PAA membranes were less than those of PVA/SSA membranes due to the reduction of free volumes resulted from crosslinking. The vehicle mechanism could be more dominant than jump mechanism for membranes in question.

  • In this study, different formulations of magnesium oxide and various modifiers (phosphoric acid, ferrous sulfate, pure acrylic emulsion, silicone acrylic emulsion, glass fiber, and polypropylene fiber) were used to prepare magnesium oxychloride cement composites. The compressive strength of the magnesium oxychloride cement was tested, and the softening coefficients of the composites after soaking in water were also calculated. The results showed that a magnesium oxychloride cement sample could not be coagulated when the MgO activity was 24.3%, but the coagulation effect of the magnesium oxide cement sample was excellent when the MgO activity was 69.5%. While pure acrylic emulsion, silicon-acrylic emulsion, and glass fiber showed insignificant modification effects on the magnesium oxychloride cement, ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, phosphoric acid, and polypropylene fiber could effectively improve its water resistance and compressive strength. When the phosphoric acid, ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, and polypropylene fiber contents were 0.47%, 0.73%, and 0.25%, respectively, the softening coefficient of a composite soaked in water reached 0.93 after 7 days, and the compressive strength reached 64.3 MPa.
