In this study, it was aimed to evaluate direct oxidation of aqueous solution containing cefalexin antibiotic with new generation Sn/Sb/Ni: 500/8/1 anode. The fact that there is no such a study on treatment of cefalexin with these new anode made this study unique. According to the operating parameters evaluation COD graphs showed clearer results compared to TOC and CLX and thus, it was it was chosen as major parameter. Furthermore, pseudo-first degree kd values were calculated from CLX results to show more accurate and specific results. Experimental results showed that after 60 min of electrochemical oxidation, complete removal of COD and TOC was accomplished with 750 mg L-1 KCl, at pH 7, 50 mA cm-2 current density and 1 cm anode-cathode distance. Also, the stability of the Sn/Sb/Ni anode was evaluated by taking SEM and AFM images and XRD analysis before and after of electrochemical oxidation processes. According to the results, it was not occurred too much change on the anode surface even after 300 h of electrolysis. Thus, it was thought that the anode material was not corroded to a large extent. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies were very high for almost all the time and conditions. According to the results of the study, electrochemical oxidation with new generation Sn/Sb/Ni anodes for the removal of cefalexin antibiotic was found very successful and applicable due to require less reaction time complete mineralization and doesn't require pH adjustment step compared to other studies in literature. In future studies, different antibiotic types should be studied with this anode and maybe with real wastewaters to test applicability of the process in treatment of pharmaceutical wastewaters containing antibiotics, in a better way.
This study was performed to examine factors affecting the decompostion of nondegradable polluants(trichloroethylene(TCE), phenol) using ultrasonic irradiation. The TCE and phenol, which are major hazard compounds causing environmental pollution, were not decomposable pollutants by conventional treatment. The results show that the oxidation and reduction reaction of ultrasound produced $H_2O_2$, $H^+$ and $OH^-$ radical, which decomposed pollutants of TCE and phenol in water. It was confirmed that the ultrasonic irradiation showed an excellent removal efficiency for the nondegradable pollutants than any other processes, utilized in the treatment of organic compounds in the industrial wastewater. Conclusively, these results suggest that ultrasonic irradiation may be highly useful for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated organic pollutants, which is difficult to treat economically by conventional process.
The water treatment by electrochemical method was performed to increase the yield of production. Continuous plug flow reactor was operated to treat poultry and domestic wastewaters. Experimental results were compared with experimental results of the wastewater treatment by chemical coagulation, they were increased over 10% in the removal efficiency of COD and the production rate of sludge was reduced by 30%. Ozone utilized to degrade or change the organic chemical structures, which removal efficiency increased to 20% in the electro-coagulation reactor. Economic evaluation was performed to estimate total cost of electro-coagulation reactor in comparison with that of chemical coagulation method. The total cost to treat 1000 ton/day of domestic wastewater was reduced by 50%.

Crystal violet, a typical triphenylmenthane dye (N, N, N', N', N", N"-hexa methylparaosaniline), extensively used in textile dye, industry and research, has been suggested to cause tumor growth in botton-feeding fishes. For the isolation of crystal violet degrading bacteria, wastewaters were sampled from plants' wastewater treatment facility, textile treatment facility, textile wastewater treatment plant and etc.. The most efficient strain in crystal violet degrading bacteria was identified as Klebsiella oxytoca. Added sole carbon source in PAS minimal media was 10mg/l crystal violet, which incubated at 30。C, the degrading efficiency was maximum 12.3%. When fructose, glucose, sucrose and yeast-extract were added 0.01% in PAS media respectively, the degrading efficiency were all 96% within 24 hours.
A mathematical model for organic removal efficiency was investigated in a fluidized bed biofilm reactor by changing the feed flow rate, the residence time and the recycle flow rate. In batch experiment, organic removal could be assumed as first order and an intrinsic first order rate constant(k1) was found $6.4{\times}^{-6}cm^3/mg{\cdot}sec$ at influent COD range of 3040 - 6620 mg/L. In continuous experiment, at the condition of the influent COD, 3040 mg/L, the superficial upflow velocity, 0.47 cm/sec, the biofilm thickness 336 ${\mu}m$ and the biofilm dry density 0.091 g/mL, the calculated COD removal efficiency from the mathematical model gave 60% which was very close to the observed value of 66 %. As the feed flow rate was increased, the COD removal efficiency was sharply decreased and at constant feed flow rate, the COD removal efficiency was decreased also as the residence time being decreased.
This study was performed to examine the factors influencing on the degradation of TCE, Benzene and 2,4 DCP in aqueous solution using ultrasonic irradiation. The TCE,Benzene and 2,4 DCP, which are hazard compounds causing environmental pollution, were not decomposable pollutants by convientional treatment. The results shows that the generation of H$_{2}$O$_{2}$, H$^{+}$ and OH$^{-}$ radical was formed by the oxidation and reduction reaction of ultrasound, and then theses decomposed the refractory pollutants of TCE, Benzene & 2,4 DCP in aqueous solution. we conformed that the ultrasonic irradiation was excellent in removal efficiency of the refractory pollutants any other than Advanced Oxidation Processes(AOP), utilized the treatment of organic compounds in the industrial wastewater. Consequently, these results suggest that ultrasonic irradiation may be extremely useful for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated organic pollutants, which is difficult to treat economically by conventional process.
The membrane processes that are commonly uscd in water and wastewater treatment are reverse osmosis (Ro), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF), which utilize pressure differentials. There is also nano-filtration (NF), or low-pressure reverse osmosis, which is positioned midway between conventional reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. Reverse osmosis membranes reject dissolved ions, while ultrafiltration can be used to reject relatively larger molecules, such as protein, polysacchalides and so on. Microfiltration is capable of eliminating particles at submicron level. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MSAS process first, as it is the main membrane process applied to wastewater treatment. Two successful examples of the applications, the cases of individual building reuse system and nightsoil treatment, are then shown. The latest trend of new membrane applications, i.e., immersed-type MSAS is also introduced.
Wastewaters produced in textile industrial processes contain dyes which are not easily amenable to biological treatment. The object of this study is to determine the post-treatment system of biological process for the textile wastewater by comparing three different types of chemical process, which were 1) post-treatment by ozone or UV, 2) post-treatment by coagulation,3) post-treatment by ozone or UV followed by coagulation. In an application ozone or UV as a post-treatment, color was generally decreased with time, however, SCOD removal effect was not that good. When coagulation was used as point-treatment process, the effluent quality was satisfying. Therefore, the application of coagulation process as a post-treatment of biological process would be more desirable than that as a ozone or UV.
Metal ions exist in seawater, groundwater and industrial wastewaters. These source waters can be recycled if their concentrations are reduced. A number of processes can be applied for this purpose. Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the promising methods. In this paper, experimental results are presented on the removal of Cr(VI) using Aliquat-336, a reactive carrier, in sunflower oil (a non-toxic solvent). The performance of this new system is compared with those of kerosene (a toxic solvent). The extent of removal of Cr(VI) from samples with high and low concentrations are presented. The process was upgraded to a bench-scale module that can selectively remove about 50-90% Cr(VI) from samples of groundwater. Thus this process can produce water within the acceptable range for recycling and for use in secondary purposes such as irrigation.
