Annually, Taiwan generates approximately 2 million tons of inorganic wastes in the form of sludge, fly ash and slug. To increase the added value of waste and maintain the increasingly insufficient supply of natural gravel, large public construction projects account for this large demand each year. future architectural trends are leading towards high-rise buildings. In light of the above, Center for Environmental, Safety and Health Technology Development, Industrial Technology Research Institute has developed the technology of manufacturing cold-bonding, sintering and bloating types of lightweight aggregates with a specific gravity ranging between 0.7~1.7, water absorption rate < 30%. The lightweight aggregate verified by physical property tests can be used as a substitute for the natural aggregate, which generally appears in replacing gravel in concrete, soundproofing and heat insulation materials. Doing so would not only moderate waste disposal problems, but also achieve the goal of resource recovery.
Most of small- scale livestock facility have difficulties to treat organic wastewater by activated sludge process as distinguished feces and urine. The organic wastewater discharged have characteristics of slurry, high concentration of BOD, 55 etc. This study was performed to estimate suitable condition for the application of packing materials, air flow, pollutant load and so on as important parameter to treat organic wastewater by thermopile oxlc process. As a result obtained at this experiments the most suitable condition for BOD load, air flow indicate 3.0kg · m$^{-3}$ day$^{-1}$,50 ∼ 100L· min$^{-1}$ m$^{-3}$, respectively, and we knew that it was necessary to add waste contained high calories to degrade about 80% of pollutant among waste- water. It showed that plastic material can be used as packing media because it can be provided as inhabitation for microorganism owing to intensity of material and characteristic of keeping moisture.

Constructed wetlands and other aquatic systems have been successfully used for waste and wastewater treatment in either temperate or tropical regions. To treat waste or wastewater in a sustainable manner, the integrated eco-engineering designs are explained in this paper with 2 case studies: (i) a combination of vertical-flow constructed wetland (CW) with plant irrigation systemfor fecal sludge management and (ii) integrated CW units with landscaping at full-scale application for domestic wastewater treatment. The pilot-scale study of fecal sludge management employed 3 vertical-flow CW units, each with a dimension of $5{\times}5{\times}0.65m$ (width ${\times}$ length ${\times}$ media depth) and planted with cattails (Typha augustifolia). At the solid loading rate of 250 kg total solids (TS)/$m^2.yr$ and a 6-day percolate impoundment, the CW system could achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD), TS and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) removal efficiencies in the range of 80 - 96%. The accumulated sludge layers of about 80 - 90 cm was found at the CW bed surface after operating the CW units for 7 years, but no clogging problem has been observed. The CW percolate was applied to 16 irrigation Sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus) plots, each with a dimension of $4.5{\times}4.5m$ ($width{\times}length$). In the study, the CW percolate were fed to the treatment plots at the application rate of 7.5 mm/day but the percolate was mixed with tap water at different ratio of 20%, 80% and 100%. Based on a 1-year data of 3-crop plantation were experimented, the contents of Zn, Mn and Cu in soil of the experimental plots were found to increase with increasing in CW percolate ratios. The highest plant biomass yield and oil content of 1,000 kg/ha and 35%, respectively, were obtained from the plots fed with 20% or 50% of the CW percolate, whereas no accumulation of heavy metals in the plant tissues (i.e. leaves, stems and flowers) of the sunflower is found. In addition to the pilot-scale and field experiments, a case study of the integrated CW systems for wastewater treatment at Phi Phi Island (a Tsunami-hit area), Krabi province, Thailand is illustrated. The $5,200-m^2$ CW systems on Phi Phi Island are not only for treatment of $400m^3/day$ wastewater from hotels, households or other domestic activities, but also incorporating public consultation in the design processes, resulting in introducing the aesthetic landscaping as well as reusing of the treated effluent for irrigating green areas on the Island.
This study is conducted in order to find more improved solidifying effects than the former converter slag solidification technology. The converter slag is used as a solidifying agent, and the quick lime and the gypsum are used as solidifying aids. Several tests are performed for the purpose of investigating the solidifying effects and the applicability of the solidified sludge as a daily or intermediate landfill cover. The unconfined uniaxial compressive strength, pH and leaching of heavy metal are investigated. In the case of using both quick lime and gypsum as solidifying aids, the compressive strength of specimen has significantly increased that of specimen which used quick lime only. The compressive strength of each specimen cured for 7 days which is mixed with quick lime and gypsum as mixing ratios 7:1, 5:1 and 3:1 are $0.59kg/cm^2$, $1.18kg/cm^2$, and $1.25kg/cm^2$, respectively. The results of all the leaching tests of specimen cured for 7 days show that the concentrations of leachate heavy metals(Cu, Pb, Cd and $Cr^{6+}$) are lower than the Korea toxic waste criteria. The microstructure analysis by SEM shows that needlelike crystals appear as the solidification proceed. The analysis of these crystals by EDS confirms that these main components are Ca. Si etc. Also, XRD analysis shows that the main solidification products are CSH and Ettringite; in addition, $Ca(OH)_2$ CAH are observed. When the added gypsum is used as a solidifying aid, more improved solidifying effects are obtained and the solidified sludge may be appropriately used as a daily or intermediate landfill cover.
Protease producing bacterium, PB16 was isolated from food processing wastewater sludge and paddy field soil samples and selected by the clear zone and enzyme activity test. The isolate was gram negative, rod type and its protease productivity was 6.49 U/ml. As a result of API20NE kit test and 16S rDNA sequencying, the isolated PB16 was identified as Aeromonas hydrophila (99%). The growth rate ($h^{-1}$) was 0.21 in synthetic waste water only and 0.26 in synthetic waste water containing vitamin and mineral using a bioscreen C. Synthetic wastewater removal rate was 59 and 87%, respectively after 1 and 3 day reaction (intial CODcr was 2,472 mg/l).

In this paper, the microscopic results of granular sludge from the two-phase UASB reactors are presented, particularly on the acidogenic phase where the distillery waste water is directly delivered. Distillery wastewater as a feed contained SS of 3.6~10.6 g/l and COD of 17.3~30.4 g/l. A 12.5 l and a 4.7 l UASB reactors were used for acidogenic and methanogenic phases, repectively. Morphological studies on the granular sludge consortia were made with both scanning and transmission electron microscopies. It was interesting enough to find the different colored and shaped granules at the acidogenic on the 90th day and at the methanogenic phase on the 120th day. The acidogenic granular sludge mainly consisted of acidogenic bacteria, such as long chains of large rods, short plump rods, and various size of cocci. Whereas the filamentous bacteria of Methanothrix spp. prevail in the methanogenic granule, with dirverse bacteria entrapped therein.
Impurities removal from waste carbon black was carried out to produce high-grade carbon black. A lot of hydrophilic carbon black is produced as a byproduct of the hydrogen production process by flame decomposition of water. Due to its impurity content such as sulphur, iron, ash and etc., it can only be used as low-grade carbon or burnt out. High-grade hydrophilic carbon black is 3-5 times more expensive than oil-based carbon black because of its process difficulties and requires pollutant treatment. Hydrophilic carbon is normally used far conductive materials for batteries, pigment for plastics, electric wire covering, additives for rubber, etc.. In these applications, hydrophilic carbon must maintain its high purity. In this study magnetic separation, froth flotation and ultrasonic treatment were employed to remove impurities from the low-grade hydrophilic carbon black. As results, the ash, iron and sulphur content of product decreased to less than 0.01wt.%, 0.0lwt.% and 0.3wt.% respectively, and the surface area of product was about 930 $m^2$/g.

Thermal decomposition and stabilization characteristics of the solid cake after the dissolution of nitrate of the lagoon sludge was investigated. Most of the nitrates were dissolved in the water and removed to the filtrate, but small amount of nitrates, calcium carbonate and uranium were remained in the solid cake. The solid cake was thermally decomposed in the muffle furnace at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. Uranium, which is in the lagoon 1, was stabilized with $NaNO_3$ decomposition to $Na_{2}O{\cdot}2UO_3$ form. For the lagoon 2, it is confirmed that CaO, which was created by thermal decomposition of the $Ca(NO_3)_2$ and $CaCO_3$, was transferred to $Ca(OH)_2$ in the air with water. Because it is known that $Ca(OH)_2$ is stable material, further additives did not need to the stabilization of the thermal decomposition of the lagoons.
Characteristics of organic matters (OM) in wastewater and the removal efficiencies were investigated using the influent and the effluent samples collected from 21 wastewater treatment plants. The OM characteristics investigated included biodegradability, humic content, specific UV absorbance (SUVA), the distribution percentage of refractory OM (R-OM), and synchronous fluorescence spectra. The types of wastewater (sewage, livestock waste/night soils, industrial waste) were easily distinguished by comparing the synchronous fluorescence spectra of the influent wastewater. The prominent peak of protein-like fluorescence (PLF) was observed for livestock waste/night soils whereas sewage exhibited a unique fluorescence peak at a wavelength of 370 nm. Irrespective of the wastewater types, the distribution percentage of R-OM increased from the influent to the effluent. Livestock waste/night soils showed the highest removal efficiency among all the three types of wastewater. There was no statistical difference of the removal efficiency between a traditional activated sludge and biological advanced treatment processes. Removal efficiency based on dissolved organic carbon DOC presented good correlations with the distribution percentage of R-OM and fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) of the influent. The prediction for DOC removal efficiency was improved by using multiple regression analyses based on some selected OM characteristics and mixed liquid suspended solid (MLSS).
The objectives of this study are to examine the applicability of waste slurry from soda ash manufacturing industries as a coagulant for the treatment of wastewater containing fine silica particles, and to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment containing silica. Acceptable water quality can be obtained with a little dosing of waste slurry by gelation before the coagulation process so it could be concluded that the waste slurry from soda ash can be used as a coagulant. Based on the results of experiments, the optimum pH of gelation for silica in wastewater was around five and the treatment process with the gelation of silica could reduce the chemical dosage and waste sludge after coagulation. Dewatering and settling characteristics of the floc after coagulation with the waste slurry are better than those of the floc after coagulation with the lime milk only.
