  • The hydrolysis of organic solid waste, such as sludge, is the rate-limiting step of the anaerobic digestion. The longer rate-limiting step lead to decrease of treatment efficiency and increase hydraulic retention time and anaerobic digester. Therefore, the pre-treatment has been applied for accelerating the hydrolysis step. This study was investigated the effects of pre-treatment of waste activated sludge using ultrasonic and alkaline integrated treatment simultaneously. The results showed the cumulative methane production and the methane production rate increased while the lag phase decreased. Therefore ultrasonic and alkaline integrated pre-treatment of waste activated sludge resulted in acceleration of hydrolysis step in anaerobic digestion.

  • Cold bed and $30kW_{th}$ pilot bed tests using circulating fluidized bed (CFB) were conducted to apply oxy-fuel technology for waste sludge combustion as a carbon capture and storage technology. In cold bed test, the minimum fluidization velocity ($u_{mf}$) and superficial velocity for fast fluidization was determined as 0.120 m/s and 2.5 m/s, respectively. In the pilot test, air and oxy-fuel combustion experiments for waste sludge were conducted using CFB unit. The flue-gas temperature in 21~25% oxy-fuel combustion was higher than that of air and up to 30% oxy-fuel combustion. In addition, the concentration of carbon dioxide was more than 80% with the oxygen injection range from 21% to 25% in oxy-fuel CFB waste sludge combustion.

  • Most Waste slurry is produced in the process of silicon manufacturing for semiconductor industry, containing silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC). Waste slurry is simply stored with solidifying by cement or buried. On the other hand, it was suggested in this study that the waste slurry should be used for heating source as supplementary material in steel making process. The waste slurry was refined and pulverized, which was recycled into SiC-based sludge briquette. Chemical composition for SiC-based sludge briquette was analyzed and the feature of heating source was observed in accordance with the injection time and input amount. As a result, SiC-based sludge briquette in terms of low cost and high efficiency had an effect on increasing liquid steel temperature in steel making plants.

  • In order to recycle both water sludge and waste fishing net(WFN), it was investigated in this paper the engineering characteristics of mixtures that consisted of different content of water sludge(0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) and reinforced with waste fishing net(unreinforced, untreated WFN, glue treated WFN). WFN or glue treated WFN(1&2 layers) was also added to the mixture to improve the interlocking between the soil particle and WFN. Several series of laboratory tests such as compaction test, triaxial test, oedometer test, permeability test and leaching test were carried out. The experimental test results indicated that, as water sludge content increases, maximum dry unit weight, cohesion, friction angle, and permeability of the mixture decrease, while optimum moisture content, compression index, expansion index and compressibility increase. For the case of reinforced mixture, its cohesion and friction angle are increased due to the inclusion of WFN and glue treated WFN. Leaching result of mixture was satisfied with standard of ministry of environment.

  • It was tried to utilize organic waste sludge from wastewater treatment plant as a starting material to produce a solid fuel by vacuum flying. The effects of decompression levels, frying time and temperature on the calorific value and moisture of vacuum fried sludge were systematically investigated. Dewatered raw sludge used in this study had a moisture of 81.1% and calorific value of 2,930 kcal/kg. Based on the experimental observation, it was identified that the decompression level and frying time have the greatest influence on the calorific value of vacuum fried sludge. Moistures of the fried sludge at $180^{\circ}C$ for 25 min in 760 mmHg, 684 mmHg and 630 mmHg were 32.4%, 14.2% and 11.6%, respectively. Calorific values of the vacuum fried sludge at $140^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and 25 min were 5,400 kcal/kg and 5,540 kcal/kg in 684 mmHg and 5,520 kcal/kg and 5,660 kcal/kg in 630 mmHg, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of using basalt powder sludge instead of sand in a normal cement dry mortar as a way to recycle basalt powder sludge, which is a waste product from the manufacturing a process of basalt in Jeju. Basic performance evaluations of the dry mortar material included a compressive strength test, a flexural strength test, and SEM to observe the micro structure. The compressive and flexural strengths were increased to a replacement ratio of 21% of basalt powder sludge, whereby a strength enhancement of about 40% greater than that of normal dry mortar was shown. However, the creation of hydration products affected the replacement ratio of the basalt powder sludge. The possibility of using basalt powder sludge waste was identified in this study, and results showed that the basalt powder sludge waste could be used as a material for a secondary product of concrete.

  • Toxicity assessment of ocean dumping wastes (dye waste, urban sewage, food waste) were examined in the fertilization and embryo development rates of the Sea Urchin, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus. Spawning was induced by injecting 1 mL of 0.5 M KCl into coelomic cavity. Males released white or cream-colored sperms and females released yellow or orange-colored eggs. Experiments were began within 30 min the collection of both gametes. The fertilization and embryo development rates test were performed for 10 min and 64 h after fertilization, respectively. The fertilization and embryo development rates in the control condition (not including ocean dumping wastes sludge elutriate) were greater than 90%, but suddenly decreased with increasing of ocean dumping waste sludge elutriate concentrations. The fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates were significantly inhibited in all waste sludge elutriate from dye waste ($EC_{50}$=4.37; $EC_{50}$=1.76), urban sewage ($EC_{50}$=5.79; $EC_{50}$=2.00) and food waste ($EC_{50}$=7.68; $EC_{50}$=2.16), respectively. The NOEC (<3.13) and LOEC (3.13) of fertiliztion and normal embryogenesis rates very similar in all waste sludge elutriate. These results suggest that biological assay using the fertilization and embryo development rates of H. pulcherrimus are very useful test method for the ecological toxicity assessment of ocean dumping wastes.

  • The leachate recirculation anaerobic digestion system has the advantage of stable methane gas generation compared with existing one phase systems. In this study, an anaerobic digestion system fed with source separated food waste from school cafeteria was studied with different food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratios (8:2, 3:7, 2:8). From this study, leachate recirculation anaerobic reactor with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 2:8 that is 9 gVS/L of OLR(Organic Loading Rate) had the highest gas production. Also this anaerobic reactor showed daily decrease of H2S and NH3 contents in produced gas. Average biogas yield was 1.395 m3 Biogas/kg VS added. Other anaerobic reactors with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 8:2 and 3:7 stopped methane gas production.
