  • The existing technology which is for recycling aggregate using dried swage sludge have been limited for practical application, because the properties of aggregate are not regular and don't meet the recycling aggregate standard. In this research, an innovative slag-producing technology is developed by addition of oyster shell, waste cast-sand and iron-rust as inorganic waste additives. The mixed slag with the additives was evaluated at the various ratio of CaO/SiO$_2$, SiO$_2$/Al$_2$O$_3$ and Fe$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$. When the waste sludge was melted at 1,400$^{\circ}C$ during 20 minutes, the optimal ratio of CaO/SiO$_2$ for the slag added the oyster shell, SiO$_2$/Al$_2$O$_3$ for added the waste cast-sand and Fe$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_2$ for added the iron-rust were 1.00, 3.00 and 0.60, respectively. At the optimal condition, the bulk density of the slag was 2.24 g/cm$^3$, 2.45 g/cm$^3$ and 2.73 g/cm$^3$, And the 24 h water adsorption was 4.72%, 1.44% and 0.37%, respectively. Therefore it is proved that adding the waste additives to the process of the slag production contributed for elevation of recycling aggregate properties. And also it is expected that production cost can be reduced by decreased melting temperature.

  • To determine Pb species in soils following the immobilization process, sequential extraction has been used despite the possibility of overestimating Pb species from unintended reactions during chemical extraction. Meanwhile, the application of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) has been shown to provide a more precise result than chemical extraction. In this study, the immobilization of Pb in contaminated soils treated with liming materials such as oyster shell (OS) or eggshell (ES) was evaluated with thermodynamic modelling and EXAFS analysis. Thermodynamic modelling by visual MINTEQ predicted the precipitation of $Pb(OH)_2$ in OS and ES treated soils. In particular, the values of saturation index (SI) for $Pb(OH)_2$ in OS (SI=0.286) and ES (SI=0.453) treated soils were greater than in the control soil (SI=0.281). Linear combination fitting (LCF) analysis confirmed the presence of $C_{12}H_{10}O_{14}Pb_3$ (lead citrate, 44.7%) by citric acid from plant root, Pb-gibbsite (Pb adsorbed gibbsite, 26.4%), and Pb-kaolinite (Pb adsorbed kaolinite, 20.3%) in the control soil. On the other hand, $Pb(OH)_2$ (16.8%), Pb-gibbsite (39.3%), and Pb-kaolinite (25.6%) were observed in the OS treated soil and $Pb(OH)_2$ (55.2%) and Pb-gibbsite (33.8%) were also confirmed in the ES treated soil. Our results indicate that the treatment with OS and ES immobilizes Pb by adsorption of Pb onto the soil minerals as a result of the increase in soil negative charge and the formation of stable $Pb(OH)_2$ under high pH condition of soils.

  • Three newly authorized bivoltine silkworm hybrids namely, $CSR2{\times}CSR4$ (productive single hybrid), $(CSR6{\times}CSR26){\times}(CSR2{\times}CSR27)$ (productive double hybrid) and $CSR18{\times}CSR19$ (robust single hybrid) were chosen for the present study. These hybrids were subjected to different temperature and humidity treatments i.e., $25{\pm}$1^{\circ}C and RH $65{\pm}5%$ (control), $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, with combinations of low relative humidity (RH $65{\pm}5%$) and high RH ($85{\pm}5%$) at different stages during rearing and spinning of silkworm larvae. The larvae of after 3rd moult were subjected to different thermal and humidity stress till the assessment of cocoon traits. The comparative rearing and reeling performance clearly indicated that the deleterious effect of high temperature and high RH was more pronounced for the majority of traits such as cocoon uniformity, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell percentage, reelability, filament length, raw silk percentage raw silk recovery denier and waste percentage on silk weight than other temperature and RH treatments and this effect was almost similar for all three silkworm hybrids studied. The present investigation clearly indicate that the deleterious effect of high temperature and high RH was more pronounced on rearing and spinning of silkworm larvae than other temperature and RH treatments and similar effect was noticed for all the three silkworm hybrids studied. The cocoon characters can be improved by providing ideal environmental conditions even during spinning stage of larvae affected with high temperature and RH. The study also suggest that high temperature and low humidity has greater effect during rearing stage than spinning stage.

  • A combination of the submerged membrane activated-sludge bioreactor(SMABR) equipped with non-woven fabric filter and oyster-zeolite (OZ) packed-bed adsorption column was studied to evaluate the advanced tertiary treatment of nitrogen and phosphorous. The non-woven filter module was submerged in the MBR and aeration was operated intermittently for an optimal wastewater treatment performance. Artificial wastewater with $COD_{Cr}$ of 220 mg/L, total nitrogen (T-N) of 45 mg/L, and total phosphorous (T-P) of 6 mg/L was used in this study. MLSS was maintained about $4,000\;{\sim}\;5,000\;mg/L$ throughout the experiments. The experiments were performed for 100-day with periodic non-woven filter washing. The results showed that $COD_{Cr}$ could be effectively removed in SMABR alone with over 94% removal efficiency. However, T-N and T-P removal efficiency was slightly lower than expected with SMABR alone. The permeate from SMABR was then passed through the OZ column for tertiary nutrients removal. The final effluent analysis confirmed that nutrients could be additionally removed resulting in over 87% and 46% removal efficiencies for T-N and T-P, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the waste oyster-shell can be effectively reclaimed as an adsorbent in advanced tertiary wastewater treatment processes in combination with SMABR equipped with non-woven fabric filter.

  • To achieve demineralization of crab shell waste by chemical and biological treatments, lactic acid and lactic acid bacterium were applied. In 5.0 and $10\%$ lactic acid, pH rapidly decreased from 6.8 to 4.2 and from 4.5 to 2.4 at day 3, respectively, and thereafter the pH remained at an almost constant level. In a $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculum, pH lowered to 4.6 at day 5. Relative residual ash content rapidly decreased to 49.1 and $16.4\%$ in 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid treatments, respectively, for the initial 12 h. In 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculums, relative residual ash content rapidly decreased to 55.2, 40.9 and $44.7\%$, respectively, on the first day. Residual dry masses were 76.4, 67.8 and $46.6\%$ in 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid treatments, respectively, for the initial 12 h. After a one-time exchange of the lactic acid solution, in the $5.0\%$ lactic acid treatment, residual dry mass rapidly decreased from 66.0 to $41.4\%$. In 2.5, 5 and $10\%$ lactic acid bacterium inoculums, residual dry masses decreased to 67.6, 57.4 and $59.6\%$ respectively, on the first day. Protein contents after demineralization ranged from $51.3{\sim}54.7\%$ in the chemical treatments and decreased to $32.3\%$ in the lactic acid fermentation process. A negative relationship was shown between pH and demineralization rate in lactic acid and lactic acid bacterium treatments. These results suggest that lactic acid fermentation can be an alternative for demineralization of crab shells, even though the rate and efficiency of the demineralization is lower than the chemical treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of reusable organic wastes, on soil organisms and chemical properties. Bone meal, de-oiled cake, and oyster shell were applied and abundances of soil organisms were measured at 3 and 15 months, after treatment in soil under sawleaf zelkova cultivation. Soil organisms are affected, by the quality of applied organic wastes. Abundance of microorganisms was higher in oyster shell treated soils than in untreated soils, suggesting that soil pH is a driving force, altering abundance and structure of the microbial community. Increase in abundance of bacterivorous nematodes was observed under treatment with bone meal and de-oiled cake, but there was slight change in abundance of fungivorous and herbivorous nematodes. Abundance of herbivorous nematode was positively correlated with plant growth, at 15 months after treatment. Response of microarthropods in the Collembola and Oribatida was not apparent. Abundances of primary consumers were not significantly correlated with microorganisms. This study suggested that organic waste influences soil organisms primarily by altering soil chemical properties and bottom-up effects may not occur in trophic reactions.

  • An experiment was conducted to produce vaterite-type precipitated calcium carbonate from waste oyster shells in order to use them as recyclable resources. Calcined oyster shells containing calcium oxide as their main component were prepared at a temperature of 800℃ for 24 h. The oyster shells were dissolved in nitric acid or hydrochloric acid solution to make 0.1 M calcium nitrate or calcium chloride aqueous solution, and a carbonation reaction was performed using a 0.1 M sodium carbonate aqueous solution under various experimental conditions, which included varying the amount of aspatic acid additive, the amount of NH4OH added, the reaction time, the reaction temperature, the stirring speed, and the type of dissolved acid. The XRD, SEM, and size distributions were analyzed and the vaterite content was calculated. Spherical precipitated calcium carbonate with a vaterite content of 95.9% was synthesized by adding 0.1 mol aspatic acid/1 mol CaO and 2 cm3 of NH4OH, and reacting for 1 h at 25℃ while stirring at 600 rpm. The average particle diameter was found to be 12.11 ㎛. Calcium carbonate contatining high vaterite is used as high value added calcium carbonate for medical, food, inke additiver, etc.

  • Objective: This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of golden needle mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) stem waste (FVW), on organic eggs production, calcium utilization, antibody response, serum immunoglobulin, and serum cytokine concentration at early phase of production in laying hens. Methods: A total 210, 19 weeks old aged ISA Brown layers were randomly assigned into 5 equal treatment groups, with 7 replications of 6 hens each. Dietary treatment included a standard basal diet as control; antibiotic (0.05% flavomycin); 2% FVW; 4% FVW; and 6% FVW. The experimental duration was 10 weeks. Results: There was no significant differences (p>0.05) on hen day egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) among experimental groups. Unmarketable eggs were significantly lower (p<0.05) both in 4% FVW and 6% FVW fed groups than control group. The calcium retention and calcium in egg shell deposition were significantly higher (p<0.05) in FVW inclusion groups than control and antibiotic groups. Antibody titers against Newcastle diseases were significantly higher (p<0.05) in 6% FVW fed group (except combined with 4% FVW at day 147) and infectious bronchitis were significantly higher (p<0.05) in FVW fed groups (except 2% FVW and 4% FVW at day 161) than control and antibiotic groups. Serum immunoglobulin sIgA was significantly higher (p<0.05) in all levels of FVW and IgG was significantly higher (p<0.05) in 4% FVW than control and antibiotic groups. Serum cytokine concentration interleukin-2 (IL-2) was significantly higher (p<0.05) in 6% FVW; IL-6 and tumor necrotic $factor-{\alpha}$ were significantly higher (p<0.05) both in 4% FVW and 6% FVW than control and antibiotic groups; IL-4 was significantly higher (p<0.05) in antibiotic, 2% FVW and 4% FVW fed groups than control. Conclusion: F. velutipes mushroom waste can be used as a novel substitute for antibiotic for organic egg production and sound health status in laying hens.

  • To reuse the waste bone from restaurants or butcher houses, the possibility of using waste bone powder after cooking as a filler for wood adhesives used in manufacturing plywood was investigated. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) plywoods were manufactured by using commonly used wood adhesives such as urea-melamine formaldehyde (UMF) resin, urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, and phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin and the prepared fillers from cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder. Plywood fabricated by using cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder showed weaker performance in dry and wet glue-joint shear strength and wood failure than those of the plywood with wheat flour. The result showed that it was hard to use only bone powder for the replacement of wheat flour. However, the filler mixed with wheat flour and bone powders showed equivalent dry bonding strength and better water resistance than the wheat flour, indicating that bone powders mixed with wheat flour might be used for the manufacture of plywood. When bone powders were mixed with wheat flour as adhesive fillers the shell powder showed the lowest bonding properties and there was no big difference between the cattle bone powder and the pig bone powder.

  • Fireworks display is called as younwha in korean, pokjuk in chinese, hanabi in japanese and fireworks display in English. Fireworks is a kind of art calling as engineering art program that presents its artistic sense by making up light, sound, heat, form, smoke, smoke screen, time delay and kinetic energy etc. which are made by combustion and deflagrations of explosives. Korea's fireworks skill is world class. In 1980s, we already developed the skills. After 2010 year, It would develop as Nano-biotechnology considering its environmental safety passing by 1990s' grow fully step. After pleasant fireworks, it requires a environmental pollution control measure, ability of emergency state control, management of storing place, a blind shell and waste disposal and citizenship elevation etc. This paper indicated around fireworks the present conditions, environmental pollution buzz, direction of development and plan.
