  • The environmental assessment on the open dumping landfill of small scale which was situated in local small city was carried out to reuse the landfill site as the residental, commercial and other purposes through the analysis of the leachate of landfill, extracted solution from landfill waste. The waste was landfilled at 5.5~8m depth and the covered layer so poor as 20~50cm thickness. The biodegradable organic matters were almost degraded and the result of the leachate of landfill showed that the BOD/COD ratio were measured as 0.079, pH 7.2~7.6, SS 47736mg/L, COD 6193.8mg/L, T-N 596mg/L, and T-P 123.9mg/L respectively. These results were higher than those of extracted solution of landfill waste as the COD and BOD were measured as low values and T-N 7.77mg/L and T-P as 0.20mg/L lower concentrations the landfill appears the maturation phase. As the result of the assessment on the open dumping landfill of small scale, if appears that this landfill is maturation phase and the formation leachate is reduced. If the treatment facility of leachate from landfill and the layer which protects the inflow/infiltration is prepared, it can be safely used as this landfill site.

  • Most of methane gas result from waste matter in landfill, therefore the persons concerned take an increasing interest in management of gases in landfill. Infrared Gas Analyzer was used to measure components of gases, $CH_4,$ $CO_2,$ $O_2,$ through gas exhausted pipe. To measure amount of the gas flow meter(Portable Hot-Line Current Meter) was used and it was set at right angles with direction of the flow. In this research the total amount of methane gas produced in Beck-Suk Landfill was calculated through FOD method suggested by IPCC. This research found that in Chon-An Beck-Suk Landfill anaerobic resolution was made actively and the amount of methane gas produced there was 54.14%, which is higher than common figure, 50%, in other researches. The components of reclaimed waste matter, especially, organic waste matter can have a great effect of the amount of the greenhouse gases produced in landfill. We can expect that the amount of greenhouse gas will decrease from 2005, when it will be prohibited from carrying kitchen refuse and sludge into landfill.

  • In this paper, the retardation capacity of marine clay and weathered soil of seashore waste landfill is analyzed by using a laboratory column apparatus for organic and inorganic components which can represent the components of the leachate of municipal waste landfill. The results show that sorption capacity marine clay for potassium is larger than that of weathered soil. Lead and cadmium are adsorbed completely at concentrations higher than the real concentrations developed in the landfill. The bottom soils of seashore landfill can also retard some nondegradable components of organics although their sorption capacities for organics were less than those for inorganics.

  • Landfill gas (LFG) emissions from a given amount of landfill waste depend on the carbon flows in the waste. The objective of this study was to more accurately estimate the first-order decay parameters through methane (CH4) and carbon flow balances based on the analysis of a full-scale landfill with long-term data and detailed field records on LFG and leachate. The carbon storage factor for the case-study landfill was 0.055 g-degradable organic carbon (DOC) stored per g-wet waste and the amounts of DOC lost with the leachate were less than 1.3%. The appropriate CH4 generation rate constant (k) for bulk waste was 0.24 y-1. The the CH4 generation potential (L0) values ranged 33.7-46.7 m3-CH4 Mg-1, based on the fraction of DOC that can decompose (DOCf) value of 0.40. Results show that CH4 and carbon flow balance methods can be used to estimate model parameters appropriately and to predict long-term carbon emissions from landfills.

  • The waste landfill that has been used as a park through a stabilization project to provide green space to local residents. Vegetation restoration is necessary for the landfill park project, but it is difficult to restore vegetation due to various disturbances in the landfill. This study analyzed the successional dynamics and ecological characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia communities from the slopes of Noeul Park by applying the 7-stage successional hypothesis. As a result of the study, there was almost no intermediate successional stage. There are only the early successional stage which Robinia pseudoacacia has an absolute dominance of 100% in the crown and middle layers, and the degeneration successional stage which formed by the introduction of Morus alba. This result showed that the succession of Robinia pseudoacacia communities were not able to proceed to the climax forest due to various disturbances in the waste landfill. Therefore, it was analyzed that it is necessary to induce the succession through intermediate steps such as Morus alba, since it is difficult to transition from Robinia pseudoacacia community to the native Quercus spp. community.

  • In this study, the engineering characteristics of soil-bentonite mixed liner are investigated using the laboratory hydraulic conductivity and strength tests. The soil used for the liner is clayey silt in the site and the weathered granitic soil located near the waste landfill studied. Mixing ratio of the bentonite which satisfies the requirement of hydraulic conductivity is determined and the optimum mixing ratio of betonite is recommended for the landfill. After the mixed liner is constructed, the block samples of the constructed liner are obtained and the properties of interest satisfy the requirements of the liner of the landfill.

  • Now there has been a steady increase in the field of geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on leachate flume in the waste landfill. In this study, investigation on leachate around the waste landfill was carried out to detect the leachate leaking area. Many techniques such as geophysical, drilling and sampling method were applied. As a result of this investigation, the concentration of leachate and the point of leachate leaking around landfill were analysed.

  • The adsorption characteristics of ammonia on MSWI bottom ash were investigated. The effect of the variation of the landfill environmental parameters including pH, anions and organic matter on the adsorption process was discussed. Results showed that the adsorption could be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 156.2 mg/g. The optimum adsorption of ammonia was observed when the pH was 6.0. High level of ion and organic matter could restrict the adsorption to a low level. The above results suggested that MSWI bottom ash could affect the migration of ammonia in the landfill, which is related to the variation of the landfill circumstance.

  • Seaweed waste(SWW) was used to improve the liner effect in recycling of dredged soil as the landfill liner. It was found that the compressive strength became somewhat lower when SWW was added than that was when Ordinary Port-land Cement(OPC) only was added. The permeability coefficient, however, became lower in this case which showed the lowest permeability coefficient when the addition of SWW was one percent. Hence, to comply with the regulations for the compression strength and permeability coefficient of landfill liner, the addition of OPC should be over eight percent and that of seaweed waste one percent. The results of leaching test showed that the solidified material was not against the laws of waste control, so it is possible to use as the landfill liner and to expect sufficient economic effects because wastes such as dredged soil and seaweed can be recycled.
